Sheraton Elitist vs. Dot Elitist

I need a new axe .... .

I know that there are differences between the pickups on the Elitist Sheraton and Elitist Dot. I can't find a store that stocks Elitist Models to try them side by side. I normally play through a Traynor YCV40WR. Mostly fusion and and straight ahead jazz.

What is the difference in sound between the two? Also are there any significant construction differences. To me they look the same with different head stock. I tried an Elitist Dot a few years ago and it convinced me that I didn't need to spend $3000 + on a Gibson ES-335. I know that the Sheraton is a few hundred dollars more .. but that is about all.

Buick or Cadillac? ;>)

The Dot has full sized humbuckers, and the Sheri has mini's. Full sized are a bit "fuller/darker" and the

mini's "cut" a bit more...especially noticable, in the neck pickup. The mini seems to be a bit more articulate,

(less mud) than the full size. But either would be a great guitar. Pickup differences, for the most part, can

be compensated by amp settings, and/or playing techniques.

I have the Sheri, and LOVE it! But, I also have a Gibson "Lucille" and LOVE it, as well.

They're just a bit different, but not "better or worse," you know?

The Cadillac has block inlays and the Buick has, well, DOTS.

And the Sheraton is an original design that has stood the test of time. The Dot is a copy of a Gibson product. You know, like a Hummer instead of a HumVee.

I'll take the Sheraton Elitist over the Dot any day.

The Sherry is without doubt a beautiful and unique guitar. I have had two of them, one natural, the other sunburst.

For me though, i think I would go with the Dot. The Sherry is a little too "ornate" for my tastes, I am not a big fan of gold hardware either. the Dot is an amazing guitar, and that just the standard Epiphone.... an Elitist should be something quite spectacular.

Good luck. I hope you are happy whichever one you go for.

It may come down to what is available when you are ready to order it. MF has an Elitist Dot in [Chuck] Berry Red.

The Sheratons are on back order in a lot of places. MF annoys me by constantly re-extending the expected date of having them is stock. You may have to consider what is available NOW, and put that $1,200 from "Dubya" right back into the Epiphone economy.

Hi Henry, I have owned the Elitist Dot and I still own an Elite Sheraton. Both are fantastic guitars and are excellent alternatives to a Gibson ES 335. The Sheraton sounds much different than the Dot due mostly to the NY Mini Humbuckers. I think any guitar player who likes the feel of semi's body shape ought to have one of each. I sold off my Elitist Dot after I purchased a Gibson ES 335 but I really find myself gravitating to the Sheraton more often. I've owned 7 Elitists and I now own 6 after the sale of the Dot. The Sheraton is my favorite of all of them. Yes, even over my Broadway and Byrdland! Why you ask. Simple, because she is the most versatile of them all. Jazz, blues, R&R...you name it. This guitar can do it and do it loudly. Remember the Sheraton also costs more but she is also a heck of a lot prettier. I might get a SB one down the line some time but for now the Natural is giving me a lot of joy. Also keep in mind the necks feel different too. I thought the Dot's was a little thinker thus giving the Sherry a slicker faster feel. Give em both a shot and later on perhaps get one of each!

Hey Svet, I just noticed, in that photo of your old Elitist Dot, and your ES-335, that the

Elitist has the horn shape, of the mid sixties ES-335's...like "Clapton's" in that the horns

are just slightly more pointed, instead of the rounder "Micky Mouse ears" look, of most

ES 335's. "Micky Mouse Ears" is probably a bit "unkind" sounding, and I don't mean it

that way, at all...just that they are rounder. I've always liked Elitist Epiphones, because

they are so much closer, to the origianal design specs (in all ways, not just the "ears").

Even in the '60's, I actually liked that difference, between the original Epi's and Gibson.

But, that's a personal taste, I guess? Gibby's are great!

But, back to the thread...I think either would be a great guitar! Different sounds,

and the "Bling" factor, taken in account.

Hi CB, the horns between the two are definitely as you described. As noted it is a subjective thing and I prefer the aesthetics of the "Mickey Mouse Ears" to the Devil horns. The Elitist Sheraton and Casino have the latter types as well so I have both bases covered. I love the ES 335 body style!

Yeah' date=' I understand. When I've been playing "Lucille" for awhile, then go to the Epi, the horns

seem much more pointed, and not as wide, too. No big deal, at all. And, I love 'em both, really!

Hi CB, it's not something I notice while playing, just something I see when they are on stands.

Oh, I understand, but for me, the Sheri feels a bit smaller (more delicate?),

when switching back and forth. Not sure why...maybe it's really the neck

difference, more than anything? The Gibson Lucille neck is pretty "beefy"

compared to the Sheri's! Anyway...they're both (all) great! I feel very

fortunate, to even have that option, you know?

This is a "New York" pickup. A single coil pickup used by Epiphone from about 1946 until about 1961 :

This is a "PAF Mini Humbucker". Developed to fit in the rout of the New York pickup after the supply of pickups obtained in the Epiphone company purchase was exhausted. It is a humbucking pickup and was used from about 1962 until the present :

..if some people can get all bent out of shape about knob placement, I'm entitled to get my knickers in a knot over calling pickups by the wrong name.

Hi Al, thank you for taking the time to explain the NY/Mini humbucker situation. I was lead to believe that the pickups in the Sheraton were the NY hum buckers through Epiphones advertising. As such I stand corrected. That NY pickup sure looks odd with the screw heads being so far laterally on the PU body.

It isn't you that needs to stand corrected. The mini humbuckers are referred to in Epiphone literature and ad copy as "NY Mini Humbuckers" Some clueless marketing guy no doubt. Just doing my bit to maintain accuracy on the Internets.

Hi Al, thanks for the info. I love the sound of that Sheraton and its mini humbuckers. I would love one of those Deluxe Les Pauls with the minis as well but it seems as though they have been discontinued. I've been drooling over one ever since I saw the Diana Krall video with Anthony Wilson playing a gold top one. I'd like one in Ebony or the Wine red. I'm in the process of buying a house now and am closing in a month therefore any guitar purchases won't be happening for awhile. I have enough of em to keep me busy now.

I hear you and feel very much the same way. I cherish my guitar collection and am very grateful to be in a situation where I've been able to amass my small stash. I'm soon to be engaged and we are a month off from buying a house together. I've got the guitars so she can't turn me down in the future! lol The only one left for my stash is an L5. The rest are just "wants" and not real needs. lol

I own two elitist dots & wouldn't part with them for anything. My next guitar was going to be an elitist Sheraton, as I wanted the minis and the thinner neck, but it seems you can only get them in VS now. I'm not a big VS fan & absolutely love natural but I can't seem to be able to find one anymore.

Well, keep looking, slim...I see them, on E-bay ever so often (Elitist Sheraton "Natural's" that is),

and most are/seem to be, in really good, to "near mint" condition. Some seller had (2)

Assembled in USA versions: 1 Sunburst with a stop tailpiece, and 1 "Natural" with a frequensator

tailpiece. So, they're out there!
