The new Wilshire price puts it out of my reach

I noticed that Gibson had leaked this info earlier and that it was already discussed on this site. Sorry for the redundancy. The date on the Gibson site was yesterday, so I thought it was more like day-old news.

An Epiphone replica of one that cost only about $200 in the 60's should not cost more than a 335 Gibson today. Helloooo collectors, goodbyyyyyye players.

I think it's fairly obvious that Gibson produces these reissues for the purpose of generating sales of lower-priced instruments. There's gonna be people who get a woody for this Wilshire reissue but can't afford it. But they can afford one of the MIC Wilshires. The sheer volume of MIC Epis being (or hopefully being) sold is major revenue for Gibson, especially during a recession.

I find such strategies appauling!!! ](*,)[-X [-X

It's the same with that Beatles marketing sceme every company pulls whenever one of the beatles was photographed with one of their instruments...

I'm sorry but Epiphone has always been a Brand for lower end or let's just say lower priced guitars and the wilshire is no exception! It was meant to be played not to hang on the wall!!

Same with the John Lennon signature! I would play it instead of hanging it somewhere waiting for John Lennons ghost to appear and to play it very quietly so that the fanatic Beatles-Fan doesn't notice the guitar is actually being played!!!

That's what this world is all about! Posession! To feel "better" when one buys expensive and luxurious things! What's so luxurious about a guitar that in the early days was a very affordable pendand to the Gibson Les Paul Junior??!! Just cause it "looks" like the original? If they wanted they could make every single guitar look like the originals and sell it at affordable prices for everyone! But no, The Fab Four had a Casino so let's do four versions of this guitar!

1. Korean/Chinese --> Doesn't have the right trussrod cover on it and no "darkened" sides and back

2. Korean With Bigsby

2. Japanes --> Has Grovers on it instead of Klusons hey, Paul weller plays one, let's all run to the stores and buy it so we can feel/be a bit like Paul Weller!!

3. "USA" John Lennon Sig which looks exactly like the original

I think Fender is one of the only companys in this business who just got it: "A real vintage guitar doesn't lose it's value even if we produce mexican guitars which look EXACTLY like the old ones at affordable prices"...

Not even Rickenbacker, a Company that only survived cause of the Beatles and the Byrds and so on don't get it that people want the guitars to look and play and be priced: "Like in the 60's" and edgy ugly looking Shallers and bigger headstocks just don't fit that style, sorry!!!

I guess this is the only industry where companys can put any price on any guitar they want and some idiot is going to come in and think "wooooooooow that's a hell of a price but I need to have it!!" and buys it just for the sake of posessing something that someone some years ago had too.

I think I mixed up somethings but it bothered me for some time now and I just wanted to say them

Nick

PS: You might ask why I bought a Casino then... well... At the time I didn't know so much about the beatles (especially not what guitars they were playing) and I wanted a Semi Hollow guitar with Single Coils... So I bought it! Not cause John, George or whoever played em!

A top of the line corvette in 1963 cost $4000...... It now cost $80' date='000.... cars and guitars[/quote']

Yeah, but the Wilshire was never a top of the line guitar. Even in it's heyday it was a mid-range Epi solid body.

Let's face it, if you are thinking about the great solid-body guitar of the early 1960s, are you thinking this:

or this?

These crazy-priced Wilshire re-issues are a curiosity for wealthy guitar collectors, not musicians. That said, there are stupid prices being attached to the originals:

If I had $5K burning a hole in my pocket' date=' I would look at Gibson or PRS. [/quote']

Hell, if I had $5K burning a hole in my pocket, I wouldn't be buying no cookie-cutter factory-made guitar. I'd be getting a custom, where I'd choose woods, finish, inlays, etc., and have a one-of-a-kind. Carvin can do that for less than $5K.

In this economy I think it would be rather difficult to get consumers to shell out the money for the Wilshire re-issue. Of course there are collectors out there that will but I don't see the Wilshire as becoming a best seller. I don't know about you guys but I think the Wilshire is nothing more than a glorified SG with P90s nothing special. If I had that kind of money I would get this- -> http://www.evhgear.com/wolfgang/guitar.php

Well, they've only 100 of them to sell. I think they'll manage.

And be fair, it does with a free T-shirt. And picks.

The Wilshire will be available at select retail locations beginning in March 2009' date=' at a suggested retail price of $4,832 in the USA.

Lookie[u'] here[/u]

FYI - While the U.S. MSRP of the new 1962 Wilshire is $4832, as with all guitars the "street price" or actual selling price to the retail buyer will be around $2900.

He's BACK!!!:- Epi1....where have you been? We've about a thousand (or so) questions for you!

Anyway...at a mere 2900 (in my best "Grey Poupon" mustard commercial voice), I'd be buying

an VOS '61 SG, or ES-345...but, thanks! ;>)

I'm embarrassed to say that, once I saw the price tag, I started thinking about what else I could buy with that much money. Buying the Wilshire would be totally absurd for me, even for 1/4 the price. I like the SG shape better, and the Epiphone SG that I already own is comparable in style, shape, and (I'm sure) sound.

The JL Revs went for about that much brand new ($2900) when first introduced. So if Epi did a 2000 unit run, I'll bet you would see them MSRP at $1900 (less the Peruvian Mahogany)

Charlie Brown - I think you made a good point. Looking at the Gibson VOS '61 SG on Musicians Friend here:

http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Gibson-Custom-Shop-SG-Special-VOS-Electric-Guitar?sku=517995

It's ~$2,900 - same as the 1962 Wilshire Reissue. Both fantastic guitars. Both made in Nashville. The Wilshire has a tune-o-matic/stopbar set-up while the SG has a wrap-around only. All other specs are essentially the same. So now, what does it get down to? Brand? Being an Epi guy, you know my answer. Also - if you want to have a unique and limited guitar, the Epi wins hands down. Thanks.

Well, thanks...and, while you're being so forthcoming...what about the (new) "Inspired by John Lennon" Casino(s)...that were (apparently, prematurely leaked?) on the "Sweetwater" site, regarding NAMM 2009 "New Epiphone Models?" Will those be "Nashville," "Terada" or "Qingdao" produced models? Any information (including pricing) would be Greatly appreciated, I can tell you! ;>)

And...Thanks, truly...for participating!

The Inspired by John Lennon Casinos will be made in China (*sigh*) and they will look like the John Lennon signature guitar just at a more affordable price... I heard the finish might be a little bit different than the signature, but it will look pretty much the same...

Along with the Casino, Epiphone is going to introduce the Inspired By Texan guitar in Frankfurt in April this year...

If I had 5K burning a hole in my pocket, I sure wouldn't dish it out for this. I personally don't think it is that great of a looking guitar, whether I can afford it or not. I would much rather go for a custom shop SG with Maestro.

But yes, they will sell, to people who have so much money they don't know what to do with it.

It would be nice if they could find a middle ground between $300 Wilshires and $5,000 Wilshires. But that is sort of Gibson's domain.

If Chinese labor is cheap, how about nitro-finished guitars made in China for $1,000 or so that are recreations of the 1960's Epiphone models.

I'd like to see this, too. With higher quality control to match.

Fender are dipping their toe in the mid-priced nitro finish range with the "Road Worn" MIM strats at a $950.00 street price.

Hi Charlie - The Inspired by Lennon Casinos have not been officially released and in consideration of our relationship with and respect for the Lennon Estate, it would be inappropriate to discuss these before officially released. I apologize for the "leak." As soon as we have some official information we will let you know. Thanks.
