A.J.
It's a 2003 Gibson Les Paul Special. Dude only wants 425 for it. It's not a Studio or an Epiphone. It's a Gibson Les Paul. The serial number matches up and everything. What's the possible catch? Mainly, is that a good deal? I don't know much about that specific type (Special). There are some Gibson owners who have been playing longer than I've been alive. Help me! :)

A.J.
Dang. I thought I was getting a deal. So a "Special" isn't really all that special. Mine's a standard, so I thought maybe special was something "beyond."

NeoConMan
Special is a lower-cost, no frills line. Originally for students/beginners. No carved top, flat like an SG. This one have a gloss finish? Okay, that's a good price. Especially if it has a case. If it's a satin finish, known as "worn" or "faded" then you're getting what you pay for, Chump. What pickups? Some of the Specials had P-90s or P-100s in them - looks like a plastic soap bar with screws down the center. Cool pickups, a whole 'nuther world of tone. Guitar Center did a big run of natural finish Specials - 2000-2003 or so. Hate Guitar Center, but they are cool guitars.

A.J.
Screw it. It's on Ebay and it's hit or miss sometimes with some folks. It's the dot in-lay or whatever. Y'all go see if it's worth someone's time. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330500051965&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
NeoConMan
Yeah, cheapo finish. No case = no deal for me. Guitar is being shipped in a box? No thanks.

A.J.
Yeah, the finish bothered me too. I want my stuff to look good and play good.
NeoConMan
I get so tickled listening to the guys with the cheapo finish on their bargain-basement Gibsons. They get pissed when I talk about the value of their guitars. Gibson made those guitars with that finish SPECIFICALLY to lower the price point. Nitro takes a long time to spray, dry, spray, dry, buff, maybe spray a little more, buff, etc. OR... Shoot it once with a fast-drying flat finish, slide it in a box and ship it!!! Like I said, ya get whatcha pay for. Look for one in gloss, they are still cool guitars at a good price.

ChanMan
Actually.... given your statement about liking guitars that look good, I would STRONGLY advise you to make up your own mind about the guitar. Go play one locally and see what you think. There are folks on this board who spout puffery as if it were gospel. If I had listend to them, I'd have missed out on 2 of the best guitars I've ever owned. Having said that.... The current bid price is ok for the guitar they are selling, and going through PayPal gives you some security against false advertisements. Did you look at the guys feed back? Specifically the one where he canceled the sale of a PRS because the guitar wasn't in good condition? If you find one locally, like the way it looks, sounds and plays, it seems as if the guy is pretty honest and the worst that could happen is he'd cancel the sale. Good luck, and let us know if you pull the trigger!

It goes both ways - I get a kick out of the folks who really think that a pass through a shaper, followed with a glop of binding and a buff out is worth so many thousands more than one without. They call pictures of their untouched shiny guitars "porn". Go figure. I listen to them more than I look at 'em.
NeoConMan
I hear ya RS. That's why I don't have a stable full of Customs and such. A couple flashy guitars I own are available no other way. Rickenbacker 381 fer instance. But is it "puffery" to warn a newbie (coming here to learn after all) about a finish he may not know about? Possibly keeping him from getting punk'd? Our oldest had a Les Paul IDENTICAL to that one. Great guitar, played and sounded fantastic. My only gripe was the finish on the back of the neck - sticky and rough. He was cool with the finish because he was so excited to buy his own Les Paul. (Consider my collection for comparison, and the guitars of my fellow players and collectors.) Everytime he told one of his buddies he had a Les Paul, they were excited. "For reals? A real Les Paul? Not an Epiphone?!?" Yes indeed, a real Les Paul. Then he would show them. They would take one look at the pathetic finish and suddenly fall quiet.... "Oh, yeah... a Les Paul. Yeah... it's, um, cool...." He still loved the guitar, as proud as ever, but he certainly got pissed about the gloomy reception. Explaining to them all the esoterica about thinner finishes letting the body breathe, etc, never worked. The fact is, it was finished cheap to sell cheap. Used, they sell even cheaper. Doesn't make it a bad guitar - just a cheap guitar. As long as everybody is on the same wavelength about it, all's cool.
surfpup
Admittedly, the guitar is not anything "special". However, the price is more than reasonable. Assuming you want to play it and are not looking at it as something that will gain a lot of value I see nothing wrong with buying it. Those 'plank" style LPs are often great sounding workhorses.
