Help putting a date on a Fender Amp...

Spot

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys,...I was hoping someone could kindly help to date my old Fender amp..... It's a Blackface Vibro Champ (photos below...) and have no idea what year she's was made. I'm assuming it's a 60's model but I guess she could possibly be a re-issue...I have no idea...

Would greatly appreciate any help with establish a year....

The date code on the tube sticker indicates June of 1966. See Here.

Thanks for confirming that. Much appreciated....

There are so many different reference numbers on these amps that I wasn't sure where to start....

I guess the speaker is an after market mod. I wonder what speakers these guys originally came with...

The transformer code is also '66 (3rd week). The original speaker in this amp was probably an Oxford (465). The speaker will also have a mfg/date code on it somewhere. Sometime in the early 60's, Fender changed speaker suppliers from Jensen (220) to Oxford, and then to Rola (285) in the 70's.

Why do you think the speaker is aftermarket?

Because I've never seen or even heard of a Quam speaker in a Fender vintage amp. Jusr the Jensen's and Oxfords.....

Hell,.. I've never even heard of the Quam Speaker brand before I bought this amp????

Have you?

From the speaker photo, I see numbers stamped on the basket, what are they? I doubt "Quan" is a manufacturer, the numbers will tell who actually made the speaker (and when).

Here's whats on the speaker Larry.

Yep.... Just checked my reference chart, "270" = Quam-Nichols. It is still my opinion that THIS speaker is not original to this amp. Depending on how you interpret the date code, it was either made during the 2nd week of 1981, or the 12th week of some year that ended in an "8", either way it does not fall into the 6/66 assembly date on the tube chart. It is my experience that the year is generally two digits, and 1-9 weeks of the year MAY NOT be two digits starting with "0", but just the one digit (1-9).

PS: Krock, some great info on the links you posted above, thanks.
