Florentine cutaway?

Recommended Posts

I once saw an Epiphone acoustic with a florentine cutaway. Same shape as an es 175, but a flat-top acoustic with a round soundhole. Very sexy!

Anybody know what model that is (and more importantly if Gibson makes the high-end counterpart)??

Thanks, all you flat-top gurus...

There IS a Gibson. Sort of a J160 with a cutaway.

RetroRod has one but I can not remember the model.

Perhaps if he's around he can tell you

EDIT

Found it

It's A CF100E

RR posted a link to his pics' date=' you see it there

Right! -- forgot about the good ol' CF-100, which is essentially an LG with a florentine cutaway:

Good catch!

Hey that CF 100 is cool looking.....solid woods or laminates????

Supposedly solid top and soild back & sides, but I wouldn't bet the farm on that for later editions, as Gibson frequently used/substituted laminated woods in place of solid through the later '50s and into the '60s/'70s.

Hi All,

I'm a newbie and work for a fine luthier in the Piedmont area of North Carolina. At the present I' restoring a CF-100 that Bob had as a basket case for many years. The top was missing a big chunk and was collapsed which meant taking it off what remained of the body ( End blocks were loose - neck block was out of the guitar entirely, Fingerboard worn to where you could see the neck through the divots, Headstock overlay shot, headstock had been sanded and rounded to where it doesn't even resemble a Gibson headstock).

The little guitar is indeed solid woods throughout Mahogany sides, neck and back, spruce top rosewood fingerboard and bridge. I've been taking pictures of the progress and will upload them and post them in a separate thread for those who might be interested

I'm a little confused by one photo in this thread - the photo of the CF-100e from 12 fret.com - It shows the belly bridge with the belly pointing downward - the one I'm restoring and all the photos I've googled of CF-100's have the belly pointing upward toward the soundhole - Did Gibson switch to this configuration at some point in time or is this an oddball?

I look forward to accessing the knowledge of this forum! See Y'all soon.

Not to get all technical, but isn't a Florentine cut away the one with the rounded horn, and the Venetian cut-away with the pointed horn?

Or am I confused?

I do like the looks of the pointy one.... whatever it's called.

Hey Bob! Welcome to the Gibson Forum. Looking forward to seeing the CF-100 resto-project.

Where about in the Piedmont area are you? I'm out on the coast.

Is your employer a luthier-in-general....OR....a vintage specialist as well?

Hi BigKahuna, Rod,

Thanks to all for their greetings!

I live in Kernersville but Bob Rigaud works out of a shop at his home in Greensboro. He builds beautiful guitars that he has designed using the best features of Gibsons (mostly) that he has observed over a thirty year career, many of them as an authorized Gibson, Epiphone and Ovation repair center. I would say he is also a vintage specialist also - he has repaired and restored many wonderful old vintage guitars in the four years I've worked with him. Right now he is working on a nice Southern Jumbo that has (incredibly) no braces on the back - Not an error - all the back braces are missing - only the center strip remains - How it got that way is a mystery! Another project we're both working on is a vintage Epiphone Zephyr with the "mastervoicer" setup - I believe it's an early 40's model but I'll check and report come Monday. Bob also did the careful, beautiful restoration on my '31 OM-28 4563053545_5541c8713a_b.jpg

If any are interested check out our work at www.rgmusic.com and www.finelinesinlay.com

we're particularly proud of the Maple and Koa resonator we finished last year:

I executed all the inlay and screenwork on this puppy - It was a Bear!

Thanks again for the greetings and I'll get my photos resized and uploaded of the CF-100 and post them.

Cheers!

Bob

I play some Robert Johnson stuff that gets up the neck, and I really appreciate that cutaway on my CF-100 when I'm up near the body...CF-100 was the FIRST Gibson to have the cutaway!!! Eric Schoenberg claims that the CF-100's always sound better than the Lg-2's even with the cutaway???

Onewileyfool,

What a gorgeous old CF! What year was yours built? That's what I'm shooting for on my repair..On a recent trip to Nashville I had a chance to play a CF-100 at Gruhn's and it was a sweet guitar. Hopefully I can coax that tone out the the basket case with a lot of TLC.

Retrorod,

The resonator was not a commission - we tossed around the idea of making a wooden coverplate for a repair that was in the shop and the project just sort of got out of hand. Here's a link to a youtube video with a soundtrack so you can hear the beast - I might mention that though the guitar has a pickup and a piezo transducer built in the sound on the video is unamplified - straight from the wood.

hope you enjoy!

I would not have believe an all wood resonator could sound like that. I love it.

I'm bowled over.

Incredible. B)
