Guitar No. 4

With just a slight case of guitar acquisition syndrome, I had to pick up this guitar when I saw it come up on ebay. Took forever to get here, but it was worth the wait. Came through without a scratch, mint condition. 2010 Epiphone Les Paul Standard Translucent Amber. Everything I was looking for! Oh, too bad I can only upload one photo.... these are only a couple hundred kB....

Used to have the exact same guitar. I'm more of a hollow body player so in the end I part exchanged it for.....you guessed it, a hollow body! Was a great guitar though and I imagine any les Paul fans would love these, the finish on mine was beautiful.

How hollow? :-k I also have this nice new Dot semi-hollowbody archtop. And, by the way, I also 'rediscovered' an old barely played early 70s Epiphone FT-160 Texan 12-string that my brother brought back from Hong Kong years ago that hardly ever got played. I 'confiscated' it and planned to tune it to all Es and Bs and play it like a big dulcimer. But, boy, it needed a setup. So just recently took it in to Tom, the local luthier, who lowered and set the adjustable bridge, unbolted the bolt-on neck to put in a little shim, restrung and digitally tuned it up - 30 bucks! A good deal in my book - it plays great now. Great big acoustic has quite a range.

Cougar...

A bit of guitar vocabulary.

Usually a "hollow body" is referring to an archtop guitar, most frequently with "F" holes but on occasion with a round soundhole. The ES175 or Epi Joe Pass are examples.

A "semi-hollow" is like the Epi Dot or it's papa, the Gibbie ES335. It has a wood block in the body to lessen feedback. It's also almost inevitably a "thinline" guitar, meaning it ain't as deep from front to back. In most cases you can almost think a neck that extends through the guitar, plus added "wings" that are hollow.

A guitar like your Texan is a "flattop."

At the time, it was a casino I part exchanged it for. I've now got a 355 in white and am on the verge of getting a Sheraton reissue. Like les Paul's but love hollow bodies or semi hollow bodies. Sorry didn't point that our before.

That's what I suspected. I had a couple Sheraton IIs on my ebay watch list, just to, you know, see what they went for. ;)

Qingdao has been in operation over 10 years now. They are cranking out some nice guitars!

Nice. LP Std's are my favorite. Nothing more reassuring than holding that fat mahogany body, and knowing that you have great tones at your fingertips. Does it have the newer upgraded PU's?

I don't think the pickups have been touched, so they're Classics, which is OK by me, not being that much of a connoisseur... quite yet.

Reportedly the only mod is the wiring was switched from 'modern' back to 50s style. Knowing that, one would think it would have an excellent setup. The action seems a slight bit high, and the intonation seems a bit off. Nothing major, but I think I'll take it in to Tech Tom and see what he says.

The book matched top looks about perfect

Good description! The halves are really book-matched. The veneers around the sides are really nice too, and the back. A lot of care went into this construction. Picking up another good-deal-on-ebay hardshell case for it today.
