  1. Deb and I have been to busy to celebrate our 37th anniversary the 17th so finally we went out to the Texas Road House. We both had the steak Filet, her the 6oz and me the 8oz. She had shrimp added with baked potato and vegetables and I had a half rack of Bar B Que Ribs added with mashed potatoes and a salad. A once a year meal for such an occasion and it was so so good. msp_thumbup.gif

Glad it lived up to your expectations Butch!

We had a slack attack tonight and besides it was too hot to cook so we belatedly decided to go into town to eat.

We chose the bowling club bistro and weren't disappointed, Gael had lasagne and I chose the beef & guiness pie. There is a buffet for hot veggies and salad items which makes for a big meal as you tend to put too much on your plate, or at least I do.

  2. Hey there Dig, glad you and Stu had a good time (better than the fish's [laugh]). Sitting at Heathrow waiting for the boarding call and drinking some fine Californian Red (I am gonna sleep on this flight if I gotta pass out!!!) - should hit Sydney on Friday morning, but if QF2 goes down, give my regards to the Gibson lounge crew!

Were going to be at the same airport on the same day as we are leaving on a 9 am flight.

    Safe travelling to us both.

  3. Met friends ( Stuart AKA Eggs from the (Epi forum) and his dear wife) at a lovely Chinese seafood restaurant. One dish was a Maquarie Perch that was bought to us to approve before it was killed and cooked in ginger and garlic. I must say I felt a bit sorry for the poor thing. Then we had a range of dishes inc salt and pepper white bait and calamari, which I really liked. I commented that they should call that dish "bait" as that is whai I commonly use those items for.

  4. Sorry but your going to have to wait until Friday to find out, but we've been on the Emerald Princess cruise ship for the last few days and all I'm goona say id " Bombe Alaska".

We havent barely started to sample the delights of Sydney, and let me tell you there is plenty of good stuff to consider.

    Stay tuned.

  5. That pie sounds nice!!

We were in town at lunchtime so headed to the Lawn Bowls Club just for a change. There was a terrific specials board with about 15 items.

I chose cheap as it was just for lunch and ordered sausages. It was about $12.50. When it came it was 2 big fat beef sausages crumbed and golden brown! There were some chips but this place had a bar where you can get a big range of veggies and salads. I added some salad items for a groaning plate (I was quite hungry!) These were the best snags I've had out for a long time and I finished every morsel.....Yummo!

We promptly filled out the membership documents and paid our dues...we will be back there often I would imagine.

Too full to have much for tea so I had a roast chicken sandwich with lovely local bakery bread. Then Gael mentioned we might still have enough ingredients to whip up a rough trifle...I'm in!

Cut up some left over cake and liberally doused it with sherry and added a small tub of diced peaches. A small cup of jelly cut up and distributed then followed by a liberal layer of custard...Voila! Wine trifle!

I'd made up a huge bowl of it with the intention of saving half for tonight, but as you can guess I ate the bloody lot!

  6. Casserole; chicken bacon onion sweet red pepper carrots garlic, all in jdgm's special strong onion gravy.

    Delicious but...windy later.

I used to love those Fray Bentos pies but haven't had one for years. Can't eat pastry like I used to.

You've got to have a good heavy-duty can opener with a cutting wheel for those though.

Yeah, or a bloody angle grinder!!!

  7. Last night I had a Frey Bentos Steak & Kidney pie for tea. I like these pies but they are so hard to get open that it's now hardly worth the effort!

I tried 4 different tin openers and in the end use my Leatherman to rip the bloody lid off...I say bloody because as usual I cut myself opening the damn thing.

I baked that in the oven until the pastry had risen and browned and then had some oven chips with it. It was meant to be an easy tea!

It was nice, just not worth the trouble of opening the tin.

A major problem nowadays is that almost everything (here at least) is made in China and is basically crap! Can openers, nail clippers what ever you buy is all crap. paying more doesn't guarantee better quality, just more profit for the reseller and importer.

The other problem is elderly people jsut don't have the strength in their hand to do stupid hard jobs like opening a Frey Bentos pie tin.

    Here is the offender! http://shop.coles.com.au/online/national/fray-bentos-steak-kidney-pie-with-puff-pastry

  8. Chicken satay skewers and boiled rice last night.

Chicken & boiled rice can be a problem for me because it frequently gets stuck in my gullet and won't go down. This happened to me last night and was uncomfortable for quite a while. When that happens I find jumping up and down often helps move it down some.

  9. Lunch was last nights chicken roll sliced and in bread with extra cheese and grilled in the sandwich maker.

Tea was homemade hamburgers and I was gonna cook them on the BBQ but a cool change came through as I was preheating the plate, so we ended up cooking inside....not nearly as much fun!

Gael is teaching herself to make wine trifle because I love it so much. Now that mum has gone I am left without a source of good trifle. Her first attempt is nice but needs some refinement.

Couldn't be too bad though as I had some for lunch and for tea.

  10. Cancer is such an awful disease!

I made up some "chicken rolls" yesterday for the BBQ. I took thin slices off a couple of fillets and flattened them out some more. Rolled them around a block of tasty cheese (2"x1") and then wrapped them in smokey bacon and secured with tooth picks.

A few "Chats" (white new potatoes) split lengthwise and cook the lot on a BBQ plate with a light spray of EVOO. Peas and corn finished the meal off and it is always beautiful. (Don't overcook!)

Why do things always taste better cooked outside?
