  1. Congrats.. Lovely looking guitar AND you have neck binding which is nice. Great price... Thats like a price you would have paid like a decade ago for a new one.

Specials are great stripped down guitars..  A lot of love for them..  I had a double cut special which are amazing guitars and they were £650 brand new at the time (like 2009). Theres something just right about a slab body like that. And P90s absolutely rock. Some people dont like them but I have always been a fan..  Darker distorted sound than a humbucker but also really nice cleans too.

    Happy playing 👍

I agree you can find things to like in probably every genre of music...like I mentioned I do like Sabotage and a few other tunes in that genre. There are a few dance tunes I like, but it's not something I would say inspires me massively. Aphex Twin have some interesting ideas, but I don't love their music. I've never heard any EDM that is especially complex musically as far as I can recall, but would like to hear some and be proven wrong. I can listen to things as challenging as atonal/ serial classical, free form jazz or hardcore dissonant punk and enjoy it and find a lot more points of interest than I can in Hip hop or EDM, I guess that's all I meant.

Well that wasnt specifically aimed at you. But is a just a general attitude for people I encounter that dont like rap.. And indeed I have met many people who dont like rock for the same reasons. That they didnt like what they have heard, it was all just a distorted noise with cheesy lyrics, so they rubbish the whole genre.. And to me both attitudes usually come from ignorance of the genre..  But then this is a guitar forum  so I have come to expect it  🙂

I wish I could share more info. But really its not something I can say I know that much about, its just my experience over the years and having friends who played that sort of thing regularly when id go for a visit.

I think the Gorillaz are a good example of crossing genres really well. In saying that I havent liked the last few albums that much.. Theres a tune here and there but hes gone a bit weird for me like Radiohead did. But thats me.. I know some other people who love it...

When I was very young my sister used to listen to some hip hop/ rap stuff. We'd listen to Snoop Dogg or Cyprus Hill together. I used to like some N.W.A too. I think as soon as I properly got into music at the age of 7 all the rap stuff just seemed lacking musically - often it relies on the beats and spoken word with little melody or harmonic interest and that didn't really appeal to me. I heard an old Snoop Dogg tune a few months ago and actually enjoyed it though.

I did buy Ill Communication by the Beastie Boys about 20 years ago, listened to it maybe 3 times, but never really connected with it...though Sabotage is a fantastic song. I also once bought a Roots album and I tried my hardest to like it, but I ended up giving it to a charity shop.  Just found it dull to be honest.

I love many styles of music, but the 2 genres I always struggled with are rap or EDM. I would rather listen to rap than EDM though. My sister also used to love dance music and I couldn't stand it. Used to have to listen to hours of it blasting through the wall of our rooms. Some of the worst 'music' ever created. Boring on all levels. It's like, lets make a 20 minute piece with 2 notes and '4 on the floor' where absolutely nothing happens. Let's not. I'd appreciate it a bit more if they actually played it on instruments and not programmed into some software.

Back to rap, well 'grime'. I do try to be positive about things, but this has to be a contender for the worst song ever written STORMZY - BIG FOR YOUR BOOTS - YouTube

Well from my perspective I have enjoyed Rap as long as I have enjoyed Rock, both were around when I was growing up.

What slightly erks me about peoples attitude to rap is that some people seem to think all rap is "gangsta" rap. And it really isnt. That would be like listening to Warrent above and thinking all rock music is just like that. Theres many sub genres just as there is in rock. A lot of it is absolutely not about Hoes and AK47s.

Also Rap is a vocal style, hip hop is a music style. So yes, Hip Hop which does often come with rap is very much based on beats and bass and the flow of the rap..  If people arent in to that, thats fine, I dont expect everyone to like everything. We are all different. But to totally dismiss a whole genre of music cos you dont like a certain type of that music is a bit silly.

I didnt like EDM but had a lot of friends who did so I was subjected to that quite a lot..  I still dont like most of it but have listened to enough of it over the years to know that some of it is actually pretty well made and complex music..  Its just not done with a guitar type band that we are used to.

I play because I love playing.   My weekly coffeehouse gig pays me and feeds me, but I would do it for nothing, simply because I love to play.   My days of being the next Dylan or Cash are long gone.  Besides, I never had anywhere near the needed talent or drive…….I just have a blast playing.   Has nothing to do with making money.   It’s about doing what I enjoy.

Exactly!  In addition, a lot of it degrades women and celebrates violence.   No doubt, the “generation gap” plays a part in this, but what’s too often promoted in Rap and Hip Hop is very different from the way I view life.

Yes, cos there has never been any rock songs that degrade women has there.....

No groupies or any misogynistic behavior in rock at all...   🙄

  5. There is new stuff happening, its just that we are all too old and set in our ways to appreciate it..

And younger people I have seen are in to both new and old...  My 15 year old niece is in to Queen, Nirvana, David Bowie and all sorts.. She also likes the Gorillaz, Arctic Monkeys and Taylor Swift. So go figure???  She is also learning to play guitar and also has an ever growing vinyl collection.

Theres also that band Polyphia who I think are really boring but at least they are doing their own thing and they seem to have quite a big following.

The world, our culture and society are constantly changing. Keeping up with it is impossible for me and I have no desire to do so anyway. Im happy with the stuff I like. I do try to be open minded (remember the Ren thread). But a lot of it just doesnt appeal to me or it seems us old rocker types...  But then theres nothing wrong with that, theres no right or wrong here just what you like and what you dont like. According to my mum for instance good music stopped in the 60s.. But I know thats not true even if I love 60s music.

Finding new music has been much harder since MTV but it is out there if you look hard enough and can be open minded enough for new music not to sound like the music you do like.

I presume you, Rab's, met him at the same guitar show I did. I definitely met up with you there and played some of your guitars. (And JDGM).

He was playing 58/59/60 bursts. There was one of each. I asked how he was doing and he replied, "having fun playing guitars I can't afford". I said I'd like to play guitars he couldn't afford as well. 🤣

That's also when I connected with Matt from Monty's and that's why I now swear by Monty's PAFs.

Hmm, man that was a long time ago now. I was busy with my guitars sadly. I did have a moment to have a quick look about the show. I kinda remember seeing him about but didnt actually meet him.

  7. Mostly Studios have a more shiny finish than the Trubites which have what is called a worn or faded finish.

The guitars themselves are much the same. So if you dont mind a non shiny finish the Tribute is a good choice.

Always the best advice is to go and try them both and see which one feels and or sounds better to you and go with that regardless of looks as thats way more important.

I have a 2011 60s Tribute Studio which I love as much as my Standard or Classic..  Goldtop is a great finish to go for if you can find one.  This is mine, its light and very fun to play.

Bernie Marsden, original guitarist for the band Whitesnake, has died, according to a statement from his family. He was 72.

Marsden “died peacefully on Thursday evening with his wife, Fran, and daughters, Charlotte and Olivia, by his side”, his family wrote on Instagram. “Bernie never lost his passion for music, writing and recording new songs until the end.”

One of the UK’s foremost rock and blues guitarists, Marsden wrote or co-wrote several of Whitesnake’s hit songs, including Fool for Your Loving, She’s a Woman, Walking in the Shadow of the Blues, Trouble and the international chart-topper Here I Go Again.

Born in Buckingham in 1951, Marsden got his start with the rock band UFO in 1972. After stints in several bands and a short-lived project with former Deep Purple members called Paice Ashton Lord, Marsden created Whitesnake in London in 1978 along with the former Deep Purple singer David Coverdale and the guitarist Micky Moody. Marsden performed on the first EP, five albums and a live album, from Snakebite (1978) through Saints & Sinners (1982). He also released two solo albums during this period, And About Time Too (1979) and Look at Me Now (1981).

Marsden was well known for his extensive and coveted private guitar collection, which included more than 200 pieces. In June, one of his jewels, a 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard known as “The Beast” was briefly put up for sale with a price tag exceeding $1.3m.

On Friday morning, his former Whitesnake bandmate Coverdale paid tribute to Marsden on social media. “I’ve just woken up to the awful news that my old friend and former Snake Bernie Marsden has passed,” he wrote on Twitter. “My sincere thoughts and prayers to his beloved family, friends and fans. A genuinely funny, gifted man, whom I was honored to know and share a stage with.

Dang, looks like they finally got Izzy back.

I remember Axl saying that he thought Erica Everly and Stephanie Seymour were sisters in a previous life that conspired to screw him over in this life 😆

He was definitely a little nuts, maybe he's matured some.

Thats not Izzy..  His name is Richard Fortus.

A very exciting visual feast, that video!

But I'm with you on the song.
    It did not grab me.

    😐

For such a big band with such a history and it being so long since they released anything, I was expecting better.

Even Slash's own band have better riffs and solos than this. Just not that rocking for a hard rock band.. Didnt hate it mind you. Just a bit nothingy.

  11. The only one I know is the Big Muff Pi...

Also theres the guitars controls.. Turn the tone knob down, add some fuzz and that will get you most of the way there. This is worth a watch.

  12. There is no specific guitar for that..  Most of that is going to come more down to the amp and effects you use..

For the guitar, playability has to be the highest consideration...  Any Gibson will get you there...

This isn’t really the right time for me to make a big purchase but one of these days I’m gonna have an epic LP Custom. This one really ticks all the boxes for me.

    That Epi looks excellent btw

Yeah the Gibson is stunning. But those Epis are a LOT of guitar for the money.

  15. Yes. I also think we are on the verge of a huge leap in technology...

Power is one thing I see videos about.. Solid state batteries, nuclear batteries, nuclear fusion at room based temperatures..  Theres also as said AI and robotics that have taken small leaps forward. Also quantum computing..

Flying cars. Man can you imagine.. They have been working on those for ages, but how that would ever be safe I dont know..  Its bad enough with loads of fast moving vehicles on the ground. Just, not ready for that yet I dont think.

But yeah, the future is almost here  🙂

  16. I also remember trying one out, might have even been the Midtown.. Cant remember now. But when I did I had that black residue o my fingers that some people talked about.. Which put me right off but it may just have been left over from sanding and not being cleaned properly.. Donno..

Either way we have various other real wood substitutes now.. Like this https://www.rocklite.co.uk/

Also from what I know Bob Taylor is the only place to get real legal Ebony now...

Yes..  After the government raids and confiscation of all their Rosewood Gibson had to resort to using laminated two pieces boards while it was all being sorted out.
