  1. Wow that looks NICE Interesting about the fretboard width, sounds fun to play
  2. Figured out my issue with the preamps. The guy who designed this PCB marked the electrolytic cap polarity backwards from the convention everybody else on the planet uses. Really special... So frustrated with this but at least I can wrap them up now.
  3. Had some excitement/dismay yesterday as I racked up a pair of preamps I just built. Powered up the rack and I see my other modules power on, then back off, then on again. I’m thinking “oh ****, power supply issue” when she blew one of the DC filter caps. I yanked the power right away This rack/module has a bipolar supply, so caps on both + and - rails. One blew and the other was bulging, so I disassembled the module and replaced both. I thought I had most likely installed the exploded cap backwards (couldn’t identify orientation after it had exploded) but had recently taken a photo of the build showing the cap was in fact installed correctly. Then I turned my attention to the discrete op amp and rack. No problems there. I replaced the caps and fired her back up in the rack with no DOA and she blew both caps. So I’m having an unexpectedly frustrating time on one of these but hopefully I can get to the bottom of it today. Not having the best time cleaning out the rack and board repeatedly haha. Could be something as stupid as the PCB not sitting in the edge connector properly
  4. Have you seen Compressorhead? This guy is amazing Youtube
  5. That is cool!! Are you guys taking the idea any further? I made 4 discrete op amps yesterday morning. Soldered up most of two preamps and mics as well, but I’m waiting for a couple tools to come in the mail today before I finish up. my transistor tester crapped out this weekend so I ordered a new one. Waiting on that to match a pair for the input of each op amp (the two transistors not yet installed on each board)
  6. That oak is beautiful!!
  7. Man those are nice looking. That Firebird is just a sweet looking piece of hog. The Martin looks so nice
  8. Are these going to have the same polyester finishes as the old MIMs? That was always the biggest reason not to buy them for me
  9. Nice I was guessing 1 1/4” looks like 30mm is around 1 3/16” Yeah the planer always makes the biggest mess. We have a dust collector on ours and just keep a large flat shovel next to it. Several full trash cans every day
  10. You’re probably the most eloquent person here. No need to second guess, we all gotcha
  11. Is that a real thing? That has got to be the ugliest shirt ever made Haha the idea is all yours if you or anyone want it 🤑
  12. Somebody just mentioned this on another forum recently because I think it was the anniversary of the day it happened or something I’ve never tried setting a tape on fire, but I imagine it is highly flammable like film. The way they stored the irreplaceable masters seems very unwise, but I guess they just had so many of them
  13. That’s nice!! Love the smell of walnut in the shop.. how thick is that? Your dust collection system seems to be working great in there Thats a box with a ton of parts for a few projects I’ve got in the works. Two KM84 “clones” (small diaphragm condensers), two API 312 clones (preamps), two more preamps based on a tape op interview with Scott Hampton (FET preamp), some discrete OP amps, and extras of most of the parts.
  14. Just got a big order in from Mouser. Looks like it’s gonna be a fun weekend! I just realized I didn’t post my last 4 projects here. Been working on more gear for the studio
  15. Martin is alright but I dunno about iconic I should make a T-shirt that says “iconic” in a certain iconic font. For non-profit educational purposes of course
  16. When Gibson copied that in 1960 they made it iconic. Now that the guitar is iconic you can’t sue
  17. I’m sure I have, but not in a thoughtful way where I could share my experiences. I usually just rifle through every Martin in sight not paying particular attention to model numbers, but I seem to keep landing on the 00-18 when I find “the one” Next time I will pay more attention and share my thoughts with you. But I am not an accomplished acoustic player and certainly am not an expert. As a side note I am building a couple mics in the following weeks and will probably have a new clip or two of the 00-18g to share
  18. That’s great. Do you have another purchase planned or are you just freeing up some space/cash?
  19. Yeah! I can’t say the cracks or warp in the top are doing anything favorable for it, but the sound and playability are fantastic. In general the 00-18 just fits me perfectly. Gotta get the steel string version too. I have a Guild dreadnought which is light as a feather as Larry says, but I never play it because I can’t get into dreadnoughts
  20. heres mine. I guess I probably play this more than any of my other guitars so maybe it is my favorite? I love it anyway.. It’s a ‘52 Martin 00-18g. It is not in amazing shape but it feels and sounds super nice. I’d love to get a Martin steel string too
  21. My overall favorite guitar is my SG. It’s nothin fancy but just feels perfect and sounds great
  22. I have the 660. It has 1 3/4” nut width. The 620 is spec’d at a hair over 1 5/8” nut width. These are old pics which don’t really do the guitar justice. It looks pretty amazing in real life. Probably my all around favorite sounding guitar. I really enjoy playing it Pip I somehow always overlooked the Swinger in that pic. Warmoth sells “Musiclander” bodies and necks with that headstock shape. I think it’s a cool guitar. My friend lent me a ‘64 mustang and the pickups sounded AMAZING but the neck was hideously small. I really would have bought it if I could play the neck
  23. One thing I really like about reverb are their helpful videos. They have some really good ones on drums, recording various instruments, playing songs, etc They do basic stuff and also more interesting things, but always with really good engineers and musicians
  24. I’ve never sold on Reverb, but I’ve sold a lot through. I also love getting rid of unused gear to free up cash. Then you have some guilt free money to get something good
