Sheraton, Sharaton II or Casino

Johnnie

Recommended Posts

Hi

New here..

I am looking into purchasing an Epiphone Sheraton or Sheraton II..or a Casino

I have a line on a few newer 2010 and up and also a 1994.

Is there much of a difference in quality and sound comparing a newer 2010 ish years vrs 1990's issues... Roughly 20 years difference. ?

Would the older be better built.?

Would there be a huge difference how they are built, pups, resonance, ,Wiring and Pots especially.?

Also is there a big difference of Korean made and Japan made?

At the end of it all which one is considered the better guitar.

Thanks

Johnnie

Personally a casino. I have a Sheraton reissue and a 355. Both are great guitars but still to this day I miss my old casino. I'm gonna have to get one soon, beautiful guitars!

Depends on what you're going to do with it, but I'd say a current production Sheraton 2 is your best bet. Sheraton 1's are old and are likely to have a good deal of fret wear, and a lot of wear in general. Not really worth it. I don't think they were made as well as the recent Sheratons anyways.

Casinos are nice, very popular, but in a band setting, you have much more of a feedback issue with them than a semi-hollow. Plus with P-90's you have more noise than HB's. A 335 is more versatile.

I will somewhat agree with two previous posts. I own a Casino and it's my second favorite guitar, of eight, that I own. I will say that I've never had a feedback problem, although I can get feedback if I want to, or not have "situational awareness", proximity to my amp. I am a sucker for a good P-90 pickup's sound. But, next in line for another guitar purchase would be the new reissue Sheraton II. I, too, would stay away from anything that's old enough to need a refret, too many good current guitars to deal with something like that. Mini hums or P-90s, that's the question, I think.

Well I picked up the Casino.. Natural finish.. Not a mark on it.

Sounds great.. Turned up the amp to where the body started to vibrate.

Lot more sensitive than the 335 Dot I have.. Fatter sound..

Must be the pickups AND the fact that its a TRUE hollow body.

Only think about it that I really don't like is the stupid white pickguard.. For me it really hinders the overall look of the guitar.. I think I am going to look around for a CLEAR plastic guard Or make one.

Anyone know if a clear pick guard is available .. Did a few searches and found nothing.

Nice guitar. a keeper me thinks.

tnx again

My solution was to just loose the pickguard completely.

God bless, Spamonkis

That would be the first thing I would try. Some guitars just look better without the pickguard just hanging there. I would try that for a while before going crazy looking for a new guard.

Oh, and congratulations on your new guitar!

Mine went through a few changes, until I landed on black. I see the black guards on eBay all the time. Or try Terrapin.

Of course, these days, my guitars all have a "family resemblense", so black just kinda fit in.

Nice "family" you have there!

I also noticed that on your Casino, you not only changed the pickguard, but the surrounding hardware as well. That really does make a big difference too.

Ya, the black PUs finish it off, but the black guard looks good with chrome ones, too.

Is the black on the pu's a plastic cover. Take off the chrome and put on the plastic or is it a total new pickup with different cover?

Is a pickguard not available at Epiphone? I'm not great with this computer stuf.. Sorry.

I would like to get a black pickguard with the C- Epi stamp on it.. For info, the Epi Casino I just got is a 2008.

Getting my camera back in a couple of days out for repair Will try take some picks.. I took the pickguard off.. What a difference in the look.. I like the black also as much.. Worrying about scratching the finish when playing but was thinking, I do plant my two little fingers on the guitar similar to Knopfler, now it will be the body, normally would be the pickguard. And that makes a difference to cuz now my fingers and thumb are lower to the strings.. I'll get use to that no problem..

If anyone here has a Black pickguard for the Casino with the EPI logo on it I would be interested in purchaing it.

Anyway enuff of that.. thanks for the help.

Elitist Casino! Then, get the "Elitist" or AIUSA Sheraton! The Elitist Casino

is the best made (IMHO) version, that's still manufactured! The Elitist Sheri,

or AIUSA Sheri, you'll have to buy "used" (and preferrably NOT abused), as they

are out of production. BUT, they're all worth the effort, and price...again,

IMHO!

By the way, the Elitist "Riviera," is also an excellent model, placed and priced,

between the Casino, and Sheraton.

Cheers, and good luck!

Yes, those are aftermarket pickups. It's very difficult (but not impossibe) to change the covers out, from chrome. You might even consider a tortoise guard like this, it would be my second choice for a natural Casino.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Epiphone-Casino-Pickguard-Tortoise-With-Hardware-1961-Reissue-/130897879919?pt=Guitar_Accessories&hash=item1e7a1f236f

The dimensional Epiphone Epsilons can be pricey, and for some reason, the foil ones have kinda disappeared. I might to get some made up and sell them on eBay. Watch eBay for the black guards (like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/EPIPHONE-CASINO-2005-2009-CUSTOM-PICK-GUARD-3-PLY-BLACK-/221220961434?pt=Guitar_Accessories&hash=item3381cbfc9a), then get a bracket and E . I see them every once in a while. Welcome to the Forum and enjoy your latest purchase.

Interesting debate.

Of Sheraton 1 or 2 I would only ever consider Sheraton 1 because a) they look far better IMO and B) - from what I have seen - they seem better built.

Okay, not only am I old, I guess I must be a bit of an oddball because my guitar buys have been based on playability rather than pretty. Not that my two Dots ain't kinda pretty. But... don't own those fancier ones. I can see logic to P90s. It's just not that big a deal to me although I've wondered about a Joe Pass with bad electronics replaced with P90s...

RE: Pickguard.

I'm not sure it's vital depending on how you play. I've never looked at Knopfler vids to see his bracing fingers on the pickguard until it was mentioned here.

Many, if not most of the old time fingerpickers, I think, ended up doing variations on that. I guess I've gotta be classed in that bunch.

I think leaving the pickguard on is a must for archtops and semis if you fingerpick. When I was doing country-rock gigs with a full archtop I made the error of taking off the pickguard to show the pretty archtop. I was flatpicking at the time, so not that big a deal, although even then... I had a tendency to find someplace to brace the pinkie when doing single string or double stops even with the flatpick.

As for removing it... I did it on that archtop that's older than most of the folks on this forum (1950s) regardless that there are claims of it being a gerontocracy. It's a major error I sincerely regret.

You can have both, playability and pretty. They're not mutually exclusive. Lord know there's enough guitars to choose from these days to get both.

Bender...

Yup. Some archtops - and even my semis - are too far from the strings for my pinkie, so I definitely have left on the pickguards except for that one stupid error 40 years ago or so.

I'm no LP fan but I think I'd leave the PG on one of them too for the same reason.

Blueman...

Yup. I guess I tend that if two similar guitars - especially Gib/Epi - are equally playable, my tendency is to go for the less expensive. OTOH, nothing can beat a 175 and to my knowledge there's never been a de-blinged version. Just one pup, yeah, but...

Here is my new Casino 2008 Neutral Maple finish with my new fixed camera..

Neutral Maple finish, no pick guard. Like the look. Like how it plays even better. Much better.. U see bit of difference in shade of colour. That' caused by different position of camera.

Aint that the truth. The problem is deciding which one. I have such bad gas, and it aint from the mrs' cooking either.

I got the Elitist Casino, too...Best hollow body I have ever owned, including my old '60's Gretsch Chet.

I have 2 Dots, and they are very good guitars, but the Casino is far better than ether one of them.

I have already sold 2 other guitars because I didn't need them any more, and I think I will be selling a few more soon. Between the Casino and my Gibsons, I have it all covered.
