Jericho-79
Hey everyone. I have a question about music publishing. All CD liner notes contain publishing credits. The following is an example. Publishing for one particular song- "Martin Johnson Publishing LLC (ASCAP) admin. by Almo Music Corp./Warner-Tamerlane Publishing Corp. (BMI), o/b/o itself and Anaesthetic Publishing (SOCAN) / 3 Weddings Music (BMI), all rights administered by Songs of Kobalt Music Publishing / PS Publishing / Where Da Kasz At? (BMI), all rights administered by Songs of Kobalt Music Publishing / MXM Music AB (ASCAP), all rights administered by Kobalt Songs Music Publishing / J Kasher Publishing / Prescription Songs (ASCAP), all rights administered by Kobalt Songs Music Publishing / Sony / ATV Tunes LLC / Kevinthecity Publishing / J Kasher Music (ASCAP)" What do all these names indicate? What's with all the forward slashes? What is the meaning behind all the acronyms within the parentheses? How can you explain the "administered by" verbiage? And why are there so many publishing credits for just one song? Thanks everyone.
darling67
That is all for ONE song??? I couldn't begin to explain. I'd not have been too surprised if that were for an entire album. But one song, that's insane.
saturn
I have no idea. But, I'm just going to check back later and see if this topic has jumped to 3 or 4 pages long. Then I'll know that milod and rct have chimed in.
jdgm
ASCAP web site: http://www.ascap.com/ Wikipedia article on ASCAP: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Society_of_Composers,_Authors_and_Publishers BMI web site: http://www.bmi.com/ Wikipedia on BMI: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broadcast_Music,_Inc. SOCAN web site: http://www.socan.ca/ Wikipedia on SOCAN - not much but: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Society_of_Composers,_Authors_and_Music_Publishers_of_Canada If I've read it correctly, the credits you cite are to give 4 people (obviously a band) rights (of authorship and copyright) to a particular tune...I'm really not an expert at all. This organisation is evidently also involved: http://www.kobaltmusic.com/ I googled Kobalt expecting it to be the band name! Anyone else got any info for the OP? Regards.... rct
Each individual in the band that wrote the song has a publishing company. "administered by" means you pay that company for the rights to that guys song, and that publishing company is responsible for following up on any use of the writers material. His publishing company is administering for itself and on behalf of (o/b/o) one or more other publishing companies. rct
