First Epiphone!

New to the forums, just bought my first Epiphone Guitar!

Been playing for only 12 months, mainly acoustic, but also got a second hand Squier Affinity to try out the Electric aide of things. However, I didn't really like the Squier.

So I decided to upgrade last weekend. Bought myself a Fender Mustang II amp and a Epiphone Casino Coupe.. (Anyone else got one of these?)

Welcome to the forums, and great choice! I don't have the coupe, but I've got an ES-339 -- same size but semi-hollow. Come to think of it, I've got a lot of Epiphones, and they are all great guitars!

Congrats on your new Epi! [thumbup]

Looks great, and I'm sure it will not be your last Epiphone!!

They offer some 'really' nice guitars, and at good prices.

I don't have the Casino, but I do have a Mustang V half stack (the V head and a 412 cab) ... a Mustang Floor (basically the non-powered guts of head in a stomp box console, with a built in Exp pedal) and one of discontinued G-DEC 3 Thirty (a total blast of a little amp).

Be sure to go to youtube's "Mustang Monday" to get 10 'really' good "blackface era/blues" presets to use with your Mustang and the Casino.

Very, very ... VERY ... tube like! [thumbup]

Have fun!! :)

Welcome! great looking guitar. I am sure you will come to love the Epiphone brand. They make a lot of nice instuments. How do you like the pick ups in that guitar? I have been wanting something with P90s in it for awhile now!

Welcome to the Forum! As others have said, I do not have one of those, either, but I do have a boatload of Epiphone Guitars. I have several with P90s and I love their sound. There are lots of good folks here, so do not be a stranger!

Beautiful guitar! I am certain it shall be the first of several, at least!

Play well!

Pete

Thank you everyone for the welcoming replies!

Loving the guitar at the moment, enjoying knocking some of my favourite Gary Clarke Jr tunes out with it! One thing I have noticed is a terrible buzzing sound from the amp. At first I thought it was a grounding issue, or a faulty amp, then I thought its bad electric wiring in my house. But after much research I have found that this is very common with the P90 pick-ups.

Is this just something I'll have to get used to? I have tried the built in noise gate on the Mustang amp but it takes away alot of tone/sustain. Just wondering what does other peoples P-90's sound like when not playing but plugged in?

J, P90s are single coil pickups. Most guitars with multiple P90s are set up to cancel the hum. Humbuckers were invented to quiet the hum of P90s and other single coil pickups. Try not facing the amp, it helps. I have a Riviera P93, a 61 SG 50th anniversary, and a '56 Gold top, all with P90s, they all hum to some extent. I got used to it and do not hear it anymore...

Hope this helps.

Play well, Sir!

Hi, congrats from a fellow Casino Coupe owner. I love my Natural finish but I like that cherry too. Considering the value I'm actually considering getting a second Coupe in Cherry just to have. I have a number of guitars so I can say from experience you picked a super first Epiphone.

Regarding the P-90s, in my experience there are two pickups... Single coil and humbucker. My single coils all sound "pretty much" the same, which is to say totally different character than any of the humbuckers. Single coils have more noise but it usually not annoying depending on the amp settings, and exactly where I stand in the living room, and which light fixtures are on, etc. If you get excess noise then the issue is shielding. I find the Casino Coupe's P-90s to be about as noisy as any of the other single-coils, i.e. Strat, Tele. They also are not particularly high-output. That said I think they sound amazing in the right genre of music. It's not a hard-rocking guitar.

So far the only negative I have to report is the toggle switch seems cheap and noisy. I don't have this problem on any other Epiphone guitars that have a 3-way toggle so I hope this is a rare issue. I can live with it; every time I plug it in I need to toggle it ten times or it will deliver some unpleasant transitions. This started happening after the first month. This switch may or may not get replaced in future... Ken

After reading the last two replies Im little concerned that mine is buzzing through the amp too much. I think it could be the electrics in the home if Im honest as they are only small rooms, plus we've had problems with the fuse box tripping lately. Don't know if thats connected?

I will try and upload a video of the sound on youtube in the next couple of days and see what people think. My Squire Stratocaster does the buzz too, but Im pretty much sure thats an issue with the actual guitar itself as it stops if I touch a tuning peg. The Casino, however, doesn't.
