This Year The Standard Had Nice Bevels - Small Pickguard and 57 classics.

 

We had Cool models like

 

Sg original (with Maestro Trem)

Sg "Les Paul" ( With Sideway Trem)

Sg Supra

Sg Deluxe

That Captain Kirk Sg was also a '13 i think

And there was also many "budget" Sg's as well

 

I really regret not buying The "Les Paul" Sg, those are hard to get and expensive now. One on Ebay now, Starting Bid 1500$ http://www.ebay.com/itm/rare-mint-2013-gibson-sg-1961-les-paul-tribute-limited-run/282652304155

But i did buy the Sg Original, Here's a Pick of it.Awesome Guitar, mine lacks a bit grain to be supercool but it rock's.let's see your's from this great Year, If i Remember correctly Fellow Forum Member's got a couple of nice Models from this year

Yep, 2013 was the best year for SG's in recent times. I myself bought a Kirk Douglas that year and at the time wanted the Original too. Well, it took 4 years, but I picked up a second hand SG Original earlier this year and love it. It has a few scratches and dings, but sweet all the same. My other SG's are 2 Standards and a faded Special with shallow bevels. While these are equally great, I do like the more accurate specs of the SG Original and Kirk Douglas. What I would like to know is why they didn't keep that line up for longer? I too would like an SG Les Paul, so bring them back Gibson!

Absolutely! 2013 was magical, for Gibson SG's! I bought 3, that year, and my first one, in 40 years, in December

of 2012...which was the '61 SG Reissue "Satin" finish! I have NO regrets, whatsoever, making any of those purchases.

 

2012 Satin Reissue '61 SG

2013 SG "Original" w/Maestro vibrola

Kirk Douglass signature SG Custom w/Maestro

Les Paul Tribute SG w/sideways vibrola

 

They all sound amazing, play equally well, and have most of the "spec's" that I grew up with, regarding SG's,

(which were Les Paul's, the first year (1961), and...depending on what you read, were designated LP's

until Les's contract was finished, with Gibson, and/or when they ran out of "Les Paul" truss rod covers,

and/or so designated "tenon" covers. Those "spec's" were wide, and deeper bevels, horn tapering, small

pick-guards, re-enforced '61 neck joint, wider head-stock, and neck (at the nut). Where they differ,

from the vintage '60's, is the head-stock is slightly more "flanged" (pointed) at the upper bout (the '61's

were "squarer" in style), and, the 2013's (except the Custom Shop versions) have "Nashville" bridges,

instead of ABR's. And, I believe the CS version have the longer neck tenon. In my try outs, with a nice

"Orange" amp, there was no detectable difference, between the CS version and the "Original" I bought,

regarding sustain, medium tenon or long tenon. But, that's merely my observation, with those particular

guitars available.

 

At the time I purchased my SG "Original," I played several (6) of that model, and a couple CS versions, as well.

They ALL sounded great, and played well! But, unplugged, the CS version w/Maestro, was a "brick," compared

the SG "Original" I ended up buying. It is/was very "alive" even unplugged. The weight of all the (8) SG's

that I had available for purchase, were very close...felt identical, to me, including the CS versions. But my

"Original" was (to me) the best of the bunch, whatever the price.

 

Obviously, these are my own observations, and opinions. Other's may have differing experiences. But, 2013 was

certainly an awesome year, for SG's! USA or Custom Shop!

Thanks CB! Yes, it was a concert at a festival called Creationfest down in Cornwall. I'd never heard of it before we played there, but it was fairly large with about 1000- 1500 people watching us on the main stage. Certainly the biggest thing I've been part of! I'm not actually sure what the amps were as I didn't use my own, they were just onstage when we sound checked and I was that nervous about playing I never took too much notice other than plugging in to them!

I agree wholeheartedly. I also have the itching regret of not picking up on the '61 Les Paul Tributes. I have an Original and I know it's basically the same guitar but with the sideways vibrola, but there is class to that sideways vibrola. Truthfully, however, I did swap out pots to 500k audio taper, put some Orange drops in, and switch the caps leads to 50's wiring to get it to my liking. Oh, and put in a bone nut as well. After that, it was all swell. Gibson is still doing a really good job, I think. 2016 and 2017 were great years for SGs and Les Pauls.

With a 5 ply pickguard , a Gibson ABR-1 bridge, M69 pickup rings , Historic switch tip , vintage Switchcraft nut with coarse knurling your SG will be PER-FECT !

Guess I'm in the minority of those who ended up not being super impressed with the 2013 Standards. At first I thought I'd love the guitar. Deeper bevels, small pick guard, 57 Classics. I mean, what wasn't there to like? Over time though I found the 57 Classic in the bridge to be a bit bright, sometimes harsh and the neck was just way to thin. I Always felt like I was pulling the guitar out of tune, and had to be so aware of not pulling that neck sharp that is became a chore. Sold it, and just a few months ago scored a MINT 2012 SG Standard that had basically never been played, still had the film on the pick guard. Couldn't bond with the 498R/490T combination and replaced them with some SD Seth Lovers and a StewMac Golden Era wiring harness. Absolutely LOVE the fatter neck for both feel and it's way more stable than the flimsy 2013 neck.

 

I'll take shallower bevels, smaller headstock, and a bigger pick guard over the smaller guard and a thinner neck if it means a much more stable, solid feeling guitar. My 2012 has a rosewood board as well, and it crushed the '13 I had. Of course, this is just one example, and there will surely be situations that contradict my experience.

I bought 1 2012 '61 Satin SG, and 3 SG's in 2013 all with the wider bevels, horn tapering,

and slim '60's neck, one with the "bat wing" pickguard (Captain Kirk SG Custom), and...I'm

delighted with all of them, and I've had none of those problems! [tongue][biggrin] So...???

Ahh so many SG posts and I've already got SG fever!

 

There seems to be a preference for this small pick guard variant, which I know is the original design, but I'm one who prefers the larger 'guard.

I used to be all about the small guard, but after picking up an SG Classic w/ P90's a couple years Aho and a mint 2012 SG Standard several months ago, I'm kind of digging the larger guard, and the 2013 SG Standard I owned was traded about a year and a half ago. I ditched the QuickConnect system and installed a set of SD Seth Lovers and a StewMac Golden Era harness. Wonderful guitar now.

I can only speak for the Original as I haven't had a chance to play the 2013 Standard since that year, but I assume the body is the same barring the vibrola. I agree with you. The first couple of months with that guitar was rough. The unfettered fret access came at the price of stable tuning. The 57 Classics on this SG is still a hit or miss with me depending on the day. I'm looking at some Burstbuckers now. However, after I set it up to my specs (including switching out pots and the nut), "normal" tuning stability improved (it still wobbles if I move the guitar around; I think that's just the nature the neck joint as it connects right at the very last fret). Did you have since 2013? I would hope time bonding with it would've improved it as it did for me, but if not, that's unfortunate. I'm glad you enjoy the 2012 Standard, though. I had a limited edition in aged cherry and it was such a solid guitar (no pun intended). A real Les Paul neck on that one.

I bought the 2013 Standard brand new and kept it for a few years before I traded it for, get this, a mint Martin HD28! Kept the HD28 for a while but have never ben a Martin guy, and basically sold the HD for more than twice what I paid for the 2013 SG (I got the SG in February 2014 when GC was clearing them out for the 2014's).
