nitro
Which of these two pickups would be the closest to the first Van Halen album sound.
Sgt. Pepper
I think he used a PAF out of a ES-335. So whatever is closest to that. I could be wrong. Edited February 10, 2020 by Sgt. Pepper
rct
After you get the dimmer on the Marshall and an old MXR flanger you've pretty much got it with any decent humbucker, provided you can get the volume up enough. rct
nitro
So out of the two pickups mentioned which would be closer
Eracer_Team
Also remember he used a variac to lower the input AC voltage to get that mushy "brown" sound Of course he knew nothing about tube bias and fry the tubes
rct
57 Classic is closest to the few PAFs I've had the joy of playing in my life. He stuck an old PAF in his weird strat thing, and you can't get them these days. I said "dimmer" in my post, he variac'd his amp with an actual living room wall switch dimmer. So some of the sound you hear is an old Marshall being tortured by the wrong voltage and the volume on 10. Very sag-y and compressed, but easily done today. I do it with a Blues Jr and a couple gain pedals set right, phaser barely on and some chorus because I don't have a flanger because I only use it for VH so I got rid of the last one I had and immediately had three VH songs put in the list. Same as it ever was. rct
nitro
So the Gibson 57 Classic or plus would be the way to go
Sgt. Pepper
I listened to Fair Warning the other day. The intro to Mean Street is still bad @ss to this day.
Twang Gang
Yes, the '57 Classic pickup would be closer than a Burstbucker Pro, but that alone isn't going to duplicate his sound.
nitro
I understand that
Sgt. Pepper
Aren't there modeling amp that you can sound like Jimi circa Woodstock with a flip of a switch?
nitro
The Gibson Super 57 took care of my issue it seemed to have more edge gain then the 57 classic plus. The Super 57 great pickup.
