Elizabeth
I have this guitar I found at some family’s house and I have no idea if it is real or fake? Can someone please let me know what they think and/or how to check myself?? Thank you!!
jdgm
What does the label inside the soundhole say? Can you post a pic of that? I'm not the expert here, but from what I can see of the headstock I think it's fake. No truss rod cover and the brand name and inlay just looks completely wrong. Elizabeth
@jdgm i can’t post a photo right now as it is at my boyfriends house however I can say I’m not sure- the back was damaged and has been patched up and whoever fixed it stuck a large label over it to say they fixed it. If we are thinking of the same location that is..I’m not familiar with guitars. I’ll get back to you though!
SteveFord
If you haven't already, post it in the acoustic section. Trapeze tail piece which is interesting.
Elizabeth
@SteveFord what do you mean by interesting?
sparquelito
MANY details are decidedly non-Gibson. * Shape of the headstock * Overall appearance of the sound hole sticker, as blurry as it is * Composition of the bridge * Style of tail-piece * Type and shade of sunburst finish And that weird 'jester' head stock inlay is very interesting, but also nothing that I can find on any Gibson model of any vintage. My gut says it's a fake, Elizabeth. 🙁
Grog
I agree, it looks to be a fake. The “Flowerpot Inlay” is reserved for Gibson’s high end guitars such as the L-5 or L-5S, this is the headstock of my L5-S. Yours would be a copy of a lower end flattop. j45nick
Nothing about that guitar says "Gibson" except the name on the headstock. Everything else I see in the one overall photo says it is not a Gibson.

So THAT is what they were trying to copy! Looks like they used Wite-Out correction fluid or something. 😑
Dave F
Or like this one http://legacy.gibson.com/Products/Acoustic-Instruments/2018/L1-F-Hole.aspx They used this same headstock on a J45 Custom a couple years ago I think the guitar is totally fake but the Flowerpot does look authentic.
