Gene lived a tough life, balls out as they say,  Ritchie Blackmore played with him for a  short while, in 1963, so he may be in this video,   Gene' s alcohol problem ended that band, he famously fired several shots at  Garry Glitter , unfortunately he missed.

Neither of the two guys playing guitar look like a young Blackmore.

I think from all accounts Gene was more of a drinker; after the accident he was in constant pain from his leg, and so became dependent on painkillers with the alcohol.

He also carried a gun, as jaxson says.

This tribute by Ian Dury (another who is now gone, alas) is epic and evocative -

He was in a motorcycle crash in 1955,  while on leave, doctors wanted to amputate his left leg, he refused to allow them to do that, he had just reenlisted in the Navy,  (used his reenlistment bonus to buy a Triumph mc), he was released from the Navy on a medical discharge.

He wore a metal brace on his leg for the rest of his life, and was in great pain, that brace was the reason he leaned on the mic stand  so much,

Then on December 15, 1960, the hired cab he and Cochran were riding in crashed,  further injuring his leg and breaking several ribs and collar bone.  Cochran died a few days later,  Gene never really got over that,  emotionally or physically.   His influence on rock and roll is undeniable.

Someone should do a biopic about him.
