John P
So, Wife and I are starting to empty the house out some looking towards future downsizing. As I had a ton of guitars, I sold off 6 to clear out a rack. Okay, I understand the guitars, but where did I come up with so many amps? I've got a VOX tube, a Crate, two Fenders, a Marshall, and two Peaveys. So that's 7 and I'm betting I'm on the low end of what others have stashed away.

NighthawkChris
I still have a full stack and I don’t know why I do. What was I thinking when I was 20? Thinking now about what I was thinking about then…

True Story!!! That's why!
NighthawkChris
@kidblast Cool stuff man I understand completely. I turn mine on time to time but never driving it to what this thing can output. These days my combo does the job. I think my shot at rocking arenas is over haha!
Murph
I've been saying I'm going to sell my Blue Angel for over a decade. And the Prosonic. Haven't done it yet.

Well yea, I know I have 3 other amps that are much easier to lug around, and they sound good, but not like this one plus I'm in a situation where I use it as intended about once a week. Well, you're lucky you have a situation with a band I take it where you actually need to use something that big. No one is lining up to see my band like that lol. I'm just man getting older with some nice guitars and gear. Hoping to give it away to my kiddos before I die. I learned on Epiphones, my kids will learn on Gibsons. I learned on Epiphones, my kids will learn on Gibsons. Mostly we just write and jam, and occasionally invade my son's studio and record some of the originals. We do gig occasionally but no one is looking to play bars/clubs. But we have done a few shows with other bands (where the originals are the focus), and we've been hired for a few parties/benefits in the last few years. we have a sound guy we work with, no one has a sufficient PA these days, nor wants to own one. NighthawkChris
@kidblast at my drummer's place, he has a basement set up like a studio. He works as a sound engineer at a casino over here. We play through cab emulators essentially with headphones for everything - except the analog drums. He has electronic kit, but we try to avoid this even though it's a nice one. All of us have IEMs we invested in as well. He basically forbids amps to come over, haha! FYI, I used to lug my full now full-stack around to the gig in the half-stack form. Still PLENTY loud. It is a Peavey 5150 II EVH sig. Super high gain. I did say I was into a metal band before... This thing melts faces. I cannot be in the same room when I crank this thing. It shakes the foundation of my house. 120W I think it's rated... I personally like the 5150 II better the the original 5150 EVH. But saving it again, for something or other. It's in awesome condition too. I take care of all my stuff - something my parents taught me to do. I remember washing cars and saving my nickels and dimes for this back in the day. kidblast
I remember one if the bands that rented some space where my son's band was renting had one like yours, it was brutal. the 50wat JVM is plenty loud. Almost bought the 100wat but this 50 is more than enough. I try to take care of my stuff too. I have a Fender Deville 4x10 and another Marshall rig that I got in the mid/late 90s. They still look pretty much like the did when I bought them. I have amp covers for everything. that helps.

I'm not sure why the 5150 was 120W, but in all actuality, the extra 20W compared to 100W isn't that much gain in volume comparatively. It's like when someone buys a 50W amp they are only getting 3dB less volume than the 100W. I believe the wattage generally gives you more "clean" room. So to get to the "dirty" part of the 100W, you're cranking it a bit more. Going down another rabbit hole, I started to look into attenuators to actually use my 5150 in my music room. Neither here nor there, but generally speaking, that's my take on tube amp wattage. Same thing goes for car audio - when we could actually do something about our car's sound system... Now a days, our infotainment system is absolutely necessary for important controls, so I say it is inadvisable to put in your new sound system into your car. But it came down to 400W and 800W systems or something like that... Getting into amps in cars not to blast that rap garbage, but listening to hard rock with subs is AWESOME! Nothing made me feel happier than blasting some Pantera and looking at the car next to me while the people looked over in horror, haha! I liked the parts where Phil was blasting out some serious F bombs on top of some brutal guitar crunch!
Twang Gang
Where do they come from? It's from not selling or trading in the old one when you get a new one. Some people are just collectors without realizing it. They don't gig much so aren't concerned about practicality of the amp and carrying it around. They get bored with the sound they have and buy and new amp - but keep the old one so they can always go back to that sound. Maybe it's a fear of losing a sound you're familiar with and that the new amp won't produce it. Plus it's sort of hard to sell a used amp. A potential buyer is fearful that it might break down the day after they buy it and never want to pay what you're asking so you end up just keeping it.

That was my reasoning for the 50w v 100w, the 100w was +$400 at the time besides, we should not be too loud for a 50w to cut it. We're getting older and while that's bad enough, lets not go deaf too. My ford Taurus (1997) I had an after market stereo that I got at Circuit City and they install. 2x12 sub took up the whole trunk, replaced all the speakers with more load handing drivers and put a 600w power amp in there. I could raise the dead with that thing.. Edited March 22, 2022 by kidblast

merciful-evans
I still use the same Fender Stage I've had for the last 25 years. I have 2 others. A Fishman acoustic amp & a Yamaha Th30 for home use. TBH, I could lose the Fishman now. Haven't touched it in 3 years. Never collected amps. Never collected guitars either for the first 40+ years.
