We seem to have lost a lot in this forum and so to get some posts back I'll gladly start by posting my 1970 Made In Kalamazoo ES-330 (along with my 2001, Korea/Peerless Casino).

I think the 330 is one of the most under-appreciated guitars made. Beautiful P90 tone, light weight, great neck/action, and also an acoustic for practicing.

Here is my 1959 sunburst...

Pretty - and probably worth a lot of money now.

I quit bringing my 1970 to the gig with they started going for $5k on ebay. I got the Casino which actually sounds better plugged in do to a pickup upgrade. But unplugged the ES sounds a lot better. So I play the ES at home and the Casino on the gig - and get the best of both.

I play sax, guitar, flute, wind synth, vocals, percussion controller and sometimes keyboards on the gig, sometimes having to switch instruments very quickly. Since I don't want to ding up the collector's item, the Casino was a good choice.

Ooh' date=' cherry red with black pup covers - [i']nice!!![/i]

Is that one of the new re-issues or a vintage one?

Notes

Thanks!

Yeah it's one of the new ones and I love it to death, though it does feedback like crazy...keep thinking I need to start a punkabilly or noise-rock band haha...

Still wrestling with the "to Bigsby, or not to Bigsby?" question.

I don't have feedback problems with mine, but:

1) I play an adult market so the sound on stage is usually less than 100db

2) I use an amp sim/direct pedal and the monitors are 15w

I heard you can stuff a sock or some Styrofoam in there to make them more resistant to feedback.

I like the looks of a Bigsby, and the ES is a little neck-heavy (not as much as an SG though) so it might help there, and then you can always wiggle the handle for those nice vibrato effects.

IMHO the P90 is the best pickup made, and the hollow body's vibrating top adds enough complexity to the tone to give me eargazms.

Notes is forever making me want one of those.

You won't be sorry =D>

BTW, I got my 330 by accident. My primary instrument is sax, and through the years I doubled on guitar in bands because unfortunately there isn't a sax part in every song (although there should be <grin>). I mostly played the lead guitarist's "other" guitar while the lead player played his best.

In one band the lead player had a 335 which I never got to play, instead I played his SG (also a nice guitar). But I really liked the 335's looks.

After that band I went into a music store and saw what I thought was a 335 hanging on the wall for $300, so I bought it. I loved the sound and later found it was really a 330. I went to a music store, tried a 335 and (1) it was too darn heavy and (2) the pickups didn't sound as crystal clear as the P90s in my 330. That cured me of 335 GAS and I realize that I got the best deal for my ears by accident.

A couple of years ago, when I decided to apply myself to guitar and put in 2 or more hours per day practice and play lead and rhythm guitar on stage in my duo, I decided that I didn't want to ruin my 330, which had become a collectors item by dinging it while I switch instruments quickly, so I got a used Casino

Personally, I think the 330 is one of the most under-appreciated Gibsons made. The Epiphone Casino gets a lot of praise because of it's association with the Beatles, but IMHO the 330 is a better guitar than the Casino. It's mad with better wood, real MOP inlays and nitro finish. The Gibson sounds much better unplugged, but amplified, the Casino sounds better- due to the fact that the previous owner put Seymour Duncan P90s in it.

I sort of got my 339 by accident. I gigged a '72 Les Paul Recording for a decade and a half, before switching to a Strat/SG combo, and also went through a Tele phase.

I quit smoking Jan. 1, '08 and (one of) my motivations was a new Gibson. I was looking at an R8. I happened into (one of the last) Gibson Mom and Pop stores and played a 335 and fell in love with the neck. Played a few Les Pauls, and realized for certain I wanted the thinner neck, but the big body scared me, being a bar gigger that plays sometimes smaller stages, and gig 100+ gigs a year.

I discovered the 339 here, from Junkie, and BobV, and some others and ordered it without ever touching one.

Love at first note......

I do still want a full sized semi, and am torn between the 330 and the 335.

Murph.

Although I love my vintage walnut, I'm also GASsing for either a Red or Blue new one.

But then I'm also lusting for a vintage King Super 20 Silversonic Tenor Sax, a 339, a Johnny A, an LTD Viper, and a Strat. It's a disease - an addiction ;-)

The new ones are the "long neck" versions' date=' as well...so that's a nice added feature, for those who like to wail, in the upper fret area.

So many great guitars, so little time/money. ;>b

My 1970 is also the long neck version, and my Casino is not -- it does make a difference when playing leads up the neck.
