John Beef
Hey, there. I'm an Epi noob, 1st post, 1st Epiphone. Just got a Sheraton 2, Korean with a U serial #, one of the ones stamped USED on the headstock. A friend of mine bought it "new" a few years ago and sold it to me at a good price. Since a different friend had a Sheraton back in 2000 or so, I've been a big fan of how Sheratons have played and sounded but couldn't get past the gold hardware. I've just never dug gold hardware on anything. I have a set of Fralin P-92s in a box that I love the tone of but didn't have a home for. Rather than sell the pickups and then end up buying another set down the road, I started looking at my small collection and thinking about what was missing and what might be a good match for the pickups. Along came the Sheraton and immediately it hit me that was the direction I wanted to go. So, this is a project. On the way now I have a 335 wiring kit and some black/chrome reflector knobs from Acme Guitar Works, plus a Stew Mac order with a nickel gotoh TOM bridge, a gotoh lightweight aluminum tailpiece, and some 18:1 nickel rotomatics. In all I'm spending about what a new Sheraton 2 retails for, but will end up with something personalized to my tastes. Here's a pic just delivered to me... JefferySmith
Welcome Noob, The gold hardware on the Sheraton usually isn't too much of a problem because it wears off so quickly. I like the gold on the Sheratons, but would rather have silver/chrome/nickle rather than tarnished gold. Be sure to take good before and after photos. The folks here will be interested in how it turns out.
captmidnight
Welcome aboard John....sounds like you know just what you want and on your way to making yourself that "dream" guitar...she looks sweet just the way she is now, but I am betting after you get done she'll be a real beauty! Just watch out for that bridge...have heard on the forum here they can be a tad bit hard to find the one that fits. I am sure Twang will post a reply as he has a sherry also and has had some dealing with them hiself. Capt
John Beef
Thanks! I'll definitely post some during and after photos. About the bridge, I have a set of digital calipers and measured everything out and the Gotoh bridge seems to be a direct fit, even comes with metric threads and whatnot. I was pretty worried about that but am confident it'll fit okay.
EpiSheriMan
Welcome Mr. Lebeouf! Speaking from experience, these Sheri upgrade mods can be alot of fun but also can be very expensive if your not doing all the work your self! I've probably spent around US$ 1,000 on mine in total including the cost of a used guitar which is getting pretty scary!! You could probably buy a used 335 for this kind of money.... I think the sheri bridge issue is the major cost as older models have a ***** of a bridge to find a replacement. Yours looks like a later model and the bridge should be doable... Good luck and please keep us posted!!!
ButchCassidy
Here's my sheri. A little taste of what your knobs are going to look like.

John Beef
Hey, Butchcassidy, your pic isn't showing up for me. Looks like it was an attachment to an email? I'm curious to see! I was also thinking about replacing the pickguard with a black one to match with the black and silver scheme with the pickups/rings and the knobs. ButchCassidy
Yup, I did a b/w/b/w/b sheri style pickguard and some silver pickups, i like it. I wish I could do a black bridge but I have the old style bridge, so I might get mine powder coated or something. Hope that worked...

John Beef
Just as an update, all the parts are in. The Gotoh lightweight aluminum tailpiece, if I didn't know better, I would have thought it was made of hollowed out plastic, it's so light. Everything lines up well and looks like it's going to fit - but won't know for sure until the process begins. Seems like really good quality stuff. Unluckily, or luckily depending on how you look at it, I have to take ten furlough days from my job between February and June. I've done my two for this month already and my next one won't be for a couple weeks. It is pretty unlikely there will be any time for me to get any work done on it until my next furlough day - just got a lot going on right now. The furlough days give me a whole day with no wife and no kids and the house to myself. Until then, I'm just playing the guitar - and really dig it. pohatu771
I assume your new bridge is black... I hope so. You should also get some black pickup covers, if you feel comfortable switching them. http://www.allparts.com/store/pickup-covers-rings-parts-pickup-covers-pc-0300-003,Product.asp Not sure if they'll fit, but something similar to those. chewy1281734128
the guitar in my avatar is just one of the stock ones. i dont have a supernova, although i am a fan of the guitars noel gallagher used (sheratons, casinos, rivieras, les pauls) and now uses (gibson 335s etc) he even used epis to record and gig with, in my eyes he's done more for epiphone sales than anyone i can think of in the last 15 years. chosing epis over gibson, even when they were selling millions of albums. nowadays hes gibson all the way though... im planning on doing it to my natural sheraton, if i can face drilling holes in my baby. ive got a black/chrome gibson p94 in the neck, and it looks odd with one gold and one black/chrome, but im not too fussed about looks if the sound if right through. id change the pick up or at least the cover if i put a bigsby on. John Beef
Surprisingly I had a couple hours to devote to it this weekend. Spent about 30 minutes disassembling and another 30 minutes cleaning and polishing up the finish. there was wax under the bridge pickup mounting ring. I wonder if that had anything to do with the guitar being a 2nd? Here she is naked: All the new parts: And everything laid out to get an idea of how it's going to look: After seeing this and placing the stock tortoise 'guard loosely in there, I'm definitely going to get a black/white/black guard made. Interesting - where the gold hardware made direct contact with the finish (tuners and strap buttons), it became stained:

John Beef
I don't think it's stained; I think the rest of the finish has faded where it wasn't covered. I had the same thought at first, but the finish is consistently colored under the pickup rings, the pot and jack washers, and anywhere else that was covered - it's only discolored in those spots with the gold hardware directly touching the finish. John Beef
Just a pre-assembly day bump. Can't wait! Tomorrow I have the day off, will take the kid to day care, and have the house to myself for the day. My #1 priority is getting this thing up and playing. Will take pics. Also, I started a "blog" if you will, a pictoral with comments, to document my guitar projects. I have several I have done over the years, and the pictures are increasingly spread out over many sites and hosts. It is getting difficult trying to remember where they all are, so I am consolidating to this one. http://www.flickr.com/photos/johnlipfert/sets/
vomer
John, enjoy tomorrow, it's going to be a great result. What's your modding essential maintenance supply? Custard cream biscuits and Java myself. Just go easy with the soldering iron during the caffeine spikes.

Then suddenly I realize I'm hungry or thirsty, and I say to myself, "once I'm done with (fill in the blank) I'll get something to eat or drink". then an hour goes by and I still haven't gotten anything. Music is essential. For soundtracks I usually go with Mogwai, Isis, or maybe Explosions in the Sky - something that grooves, is somewhat repetitive, and a little bit spacey.
