I thought a few of you might like to see the Edge using an Epi Casino last night on the UK chat show 'Friday Night with Jonathan Ross'.

I couldn't make out from the headstock whether it was an elitist or not; or a Lennon. It certainly looked like a new rather than a vintage instrument. One of the most famous guitarists in the world using Epis is a fine endosement.

Do friends in the USA get this show on BBC America?

Being discussed last night:

Unfortunately' date=' some "experts" on this forum somehow think that the Edge is a bit sh!t, and would probably prefer it if he stayed away from Epis. :-k [/quote']

The Edge is far from shizzel. He is not a fancy player, but BB king said it best "Less is more....." I think he is a good player. Heck! is U2 not a ultra-famous band? Guitar sound is 80% of the band!!!

Edge uses lots of effects to create 'sounds' rather than being a pure guitar player. Jonny Greenwood from Radiohead is perhaps his more talented but closest modern equivalent. For that he's worth considering as he took the punk guitar sounds that were prevalent at the time and managed to blend them with electronics and hardware that were little used by conventional guitar players. It's no suprise that that master of the experimental and ambient, Brian Eno, was drawn to the band partly because of this.

For that reason, I think it makes more sense to judge him as a musician rather than a guitarist. He definitely wouldn't be in a list of my top 10 guitarists but his sonic contribution to a band that was a cutting edge act and then became a global phenomenon can't be understated. The man sells records, lots of records..........

dont like them either, but noticed the casino, great sound, he uses lots of delay and reverb.

its kind of his sound now, and bands like coldplay and other middle of the road bands are always accused of 'stealing the u2 echo guitar sound'.

so he not the best guitarist, but his style is recognisable instantly.

Assuming it's the same guitar he's playing on Letterman right now' date=' it appears to be an early-60s (McCartney-style) Casino.

Exactly. It has the Gibson-esque headstock, like McCartney's, but it has the Epiphone tremolo, like Keith Richards' (Macca's has a Bigsby). Given the headstock, older tremolo style, and inlay style (fretboard inlays were dots up until '61 or so), I think it's a '62.

I guess it's been awhile since I've seen Jimmy' date=' I didn't realize he had aged so much.

Well, he is 65! Everyone gets older. I think he looks like just about every other 65 year old, and I applaud him for not coloring his hair or getting botox or face lifts or any of the other stuff that aging stars do.
