Dot, Sheraton or Casino

Caolan96

Recommended Posts

I was in the same boat a few months ago. I ended up with a very nice cherry Dot. You just have to play a casino to see if you like the P-90 sound. Some of the Casinos have a buzzing problem. The Dots are less expensive. Just play them all if you can and see which one feels/sounds best.

Yeah i have a goldtop LP with P-90's and love them, but i want a different sound so im not sure about the casino, still trying to decide between Dot and Sheraton?

Well' date=' I just recently saw here, that the Sherry has a thinner neck.

Besides the bling factor, that might be the only difference.??? Not sure.[/quote']

I love thin necks, what if i got a dot and got a luthier to sand the neck down, anyone had any experience of getting the necks thinned?

Hey 96. How would you describe the tone on your GT' date=' compared to humbuckers???[/quote']

Well I've got a Zakk Wylde Les Paul with EMG-HZ's, i love the tone of my GT, the P-90's are perfect for almost everything, i play from blues, jazz right up to hard rock, but not metal, it takes moderate to heavy distortion well, and my amp's nothing special. compared to my EMG's which are specialised for rock and metal, i prefer my P-90's the tones much crisper and cleaner, and less tinny than the EMG's which can be sometimes.

Sorry if i rambled on a bit.

Basically P-90's = Beautiful on clean, and bites with moderate distortion, but it cant handle massive distortion.

EMG's = not as nice on clean, can be distorted/overdriven all day.

i would leave a casino out......for the most part you have to know that thats the tone you want if your getting a casino...one of the number one problems I find is that because of its historical significance most casino buyers dont realize the diff between a semi and a true hollow body, Everone ask's on here...."How can I get distortion on thhis guitar its allways giving me feedback!" well thats just what happens with a true hollowbody, I would say dot-then sheri-then casino, save some skrilla and just get a dot, you will love it and its a pretty versitle guitar

I can tell you my story. You have to decide for yourself.

I played guitar years ago, classical and acoustic. I always wanted an electric, and was always drawn to semi hollow bodies. Part of the attraction for me was my love of the blues and classic rock.

I did not play guitar for decades.

Fast forward to end of 2009. I was in a music store with my son, buying strings for him. I saw a used Ibanez solid body. I almost bought it. Instead, I ended up buying a different, but similar, used Ibanez at Guitar Center. I played it for a while, and it was fun, but it wasn't the right guitar for me. The neck was too narrow and the sound was not quite right for me.

I was back at guitar center because they had a used Epi Dot. However, they had a new one for less than their price on the used one ($249 vs. $299). I played the Epi Dot and an Ibanez AS73 semi hollow body ($400). The Ibanez was actually pretty nice but cost $150 more than the Dot.

I bought the Dot, and I have no regrets. Now I just need to improve my playing (oh, and also get a tube amp).

Okay guys i think ive got my heart set on an ebony dot.

what tube amp would you recommend?

see i just bought an epi '56 goldtop les paul, and i have about £100 left over as i thought i would have to pay income VAT as im in Ireland and it was coming from the US, but it got through un recognized, so i was thinking about buying a VOX VT15 new for £100 and seeing as i got the bug for a dot im selling my iphone and can get around £300 for it, which is what a dot would cost here.

So guys what tube amp. or just stick with the VOX VT15, remember guys im on a budget :)

  • 2 weeks later...
bump.

just got a dot. love it.

help with tube amp !

My Cherry Dot sounds really good thru this; a Fender Super Champ XD.

While technically considered a "Modeling Amp"' date=' this amp has 3 tubes in it and I think it sounds great! It will get extremely loud for 15 watts. And it is a great price, $299. It's only about $100 more than the Vox VT15 (which has only one tube in it) But in my opinion it is well worth it. I also own a Vox AD30VT. And while I like it, I like my Super Champ XD more!

Dare I suggest a Blackstar HT5 amp .quite an amp for about 300 UKP but worth every penny .also has an emulated headphone out .quite rare on a valve amp .My own choice based on experience of Dots would be a Dot Studio and a Blackstar but doubt anyone else will agree .[blink]

No answer for your amp question (although I use a Roland Cube 30 and it's great), but something else to think about. I just got a used Dot, and it is tremendously versatile. The previous owner is a tech, and he had installed a set of VintageVibe HCC pickups, which are an hb-sized big single-coil (but exactly a P90, I guess). The CC stands for Charlie Christian, and they are supposed to be able to deliver a jazzy tone, which they can. The tech installed, at my request, a pair of push-pull pots to allow series/parallel and in/out of phase selections. The result is amazing, as I am able to get big, open, ringing P90-like tones, two different Tele-like tones, a pretty fair jazz tone, and a real good humbucker sound, IN ADDITION to whatever those pickups are supposed to be. I don't really know, as I never owned a P90 guitar, but DANG! So my suggestion: consider upgrading your Dot with better pots, and making those pots push-pulls and getting some amazing stuff going! Then, maybe a different set of pickups. I know you're in the UK, so maybe BareKnuckles would be the way to go. Otherwise, besides VintageVibe (nobody better!), you could consider GFS Dream 90s. I don't know if you could adequately tame the Mean 90s in a semi, and you already have the hot-P90 deal covered. YMMV and IMVHO

Congrats on the Dot! As for an amp, rather than rush into it, wait a while, save up some money and buy a decent tube amp, like a Vox AC15/30

a Fender Blues Junior
or even an Orange Tiny Terror
All great tube amps that won't cost a total bomb, you can save up for any of these amps just by saving up a couple weeks pay checks, if you don't have a job then get one. I'm of the belief that 60% of your tone comes from the amp/tubes, 30% from your guitar/pickups ad 10% from your fingers, so don't waste such a beautiful guitar on an amp like a VOX VT15, in my honest opinion modelling amps are silly, rather achieve a few tones perfectly they do a whole selection of tones pathetically.
