Sell LP for hollowbody?

Recommended Posts

Hello all.

I have this 2005 Korean Epi LP. I absolutely love the looks of it, but for whatever reason, it just doesn’t seem to “fit me” as well as my other Epi LP. I think the nut may be cut a little different and that causes me problems when trying to fret chords. Granted, I am an older beginner, so it’s probably 99% operator error and not the fault of the guitar.

Since I have another LP, I am thinking about selling this one and getting a hollowbody to have something different. Unfortunately, I don’t know much about them. There is the Dot, Sheraton and Casino, right? Did I miss any? Any suggestions on what to look for in an Epi hollowbody? Could I pick one up for close to what I can sell this LP for?

Thanks,

Bill

Hi Bill, and welcome to the forum!

Here's a few you missed:

Alleykat, B.B. King Lucille, Dot Studio, Emperor Regent, Emperor Swingster, ES-175 Reissue, ES-295, Wildkat

Tom Delonge ES-333, Nick Valensi Riviera P-94, Sheraton II, Zephyr Regent, Broadway, Joe Pass Emperor II

And there's probably other's I have missed.

You can see them all at the Epi site http://www.epiphone.com/

The only semi-hollow I have is a Dot. And I love it!

It's hard to go wrong with any of Epis Archtops.

Thats a pretty top there.

The only hollow one you listed was the Casino, the others are semi hollow.

Why not have a pro make a new nut for you. It will improve the sound and playability tenfold. And if tou still wanna trade it, its a selling point.

Offer it up in trade on Craigslist for a hollow or semi hollow body and see what you get offered. My latest Craigslist coup was offering up my Fender Blues Jr. (@$300 value) looking for a larger tube amp and was offered a few amps like Fender Hot Rod Deluxes, but then got an offer for a 2 year old Traynor YCV80 which is easily a $600+ amp. Guy was just looking for something smaller since he had a couple other large amps. Up trades happen all the time on Craigslist if your a bit selective. Just write up an ad offering your LP for a Semi or hollow body guitar and then sit back and wait for the offers to start rolling in. It works great if you have a farily active Craigslist like we have in our area.

BladeRunner..is that from an old movie with the same name?

I got one of those 2005 LPs as well, and frankly it doesn't inspire me, so it spends time sitting around.

Good to look at though.

I being what I guess one would call an old fart these days, tend to prefer the acoustic sound of my

guitars at low volumes, not like some of these young upcoming fellas who like to plug into 100 watt amps

and wail for all it's worth. Finding one that "fits" your style and personality is the key,

since guitars are really personal things..and like shoes or a suit, they have to fit you.

Lots of suggestions, I'm sure and everyone has different reasons and musical tastes, so you have to spend

time with each type to find out if it's for you.

Personally, my Joe Pass/Emp II is the Epiphone guitar that I prefer to play,

(other than some of my custom made

ones )...and my classic, I love the acoustic sound of those nylon strings.

Welcome Bladerunner

my favourite quote from that movie:

"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I've watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in the rain. Time to die."

But non of those experiences can match owning an Epiphone Zephyr Blues Deluxe.........

+1

If that doesn't make you happier with it, or you have 2 guitars that are just too similar, then try to trade it.

Hi Bill,

I love the looks of your LP too - I've never seen one with that rich dark tone before.

I think it'd be worthwhile having a stab at getting it set up to suit your style.

I know you already have an LP and getting an archtop would be nice, but still...

I'd say it was a keeper.

Hi Bill - I was able to trade an LP100 (w/seymour duncan pickups) for a DOT on Craigslist recently. The DOT retails for a good $100 - $150 more than the LP100, so we did an even trade. If you look around (and are patient) I am sure you can get a similar deal .. It may take some though as there are tons of LPs out there, and not nearly as many semi-hollows - plus it seems the people that have DOTs, Casinos, etc .. tend to hang on to them.

As far the DOT goes, I absolutely love it ... Even w/the stock electronics it sounds great. It has a very twangy sound to it, more so than other hollow/semi-hollows I have played. It's very light weight and thin (which is a big plus for me - I don't play acoustics because they are too bulky.)

First off...Welcome, "Bladerunner!" Is 2019 your "insep date?" ("How can it not know, what it is?!")

Now, WHY doesn't your LP "Fit?" Neck too thick, wide, frets too high...is it too heavy, bulky, etc.?

Semi's are great..but, they are as heavy (usually) as a LP, and bigger bodied. Some have fatter necks,

some thinner. Best thing to do, if you really want to get a Semi-hollow body, is to FIRST, go play every

model you can afford, and see which one does "fit you!" We know what WE like, but can't possibly tell

you what YOU will like. There are just too many variables, and personal "quirks" to consider. But...You'll

KNOW which one it will be, when you find/play it. Besides, trying them all out, is 1/2 the fun, Right?!

;>)

Hey guys.

Thanks for the welcome and all of the great suggestions. Yep, the screen name is for the movie. It's a GREAT movie. Joe, that quote you listed is also my favorite. One thing I don't like about the director's cut is the strong suggestion that Deckard himself is a replicant. I don't think it fits, but Ridley Scott says he is. [cool]

Sorry, I know this is an Epi forum, not a Blade Runner forum. [cool] I didn't even realize there were hollow body and semi hollow. So I have already learned something. The main problem I have with the LP is when I fret open chords, my fingers constantly touch strings that I don't mean to. I don't have this problem with my other LP. So I guess the likely culprit is the nut being cut differently. I have not yet compared the 2, so I need to do that. I suppose the neck could be different and that is causing my hand to be in a different position than I am used to.

I'll just have to keep thinking about what to do. I like the idea of keeping it AND getting the hollow body, but I'm not sure that will fly with the wife. lol I'm already close to having more guitars than chords I can actually play. [cool]

I'll be sure to read through the older posts to learn more about the different hollow bodies.

Thanks again for the help.

Bill M.

I've gotta admit a love/hate relationship with my Dot...sometimes it works for me. siometimes I feel like I'm playing a baseball bat :0) I changed out the pups in mine, Gibson 57 in the bridge, Gibson Burstbucker 1 in the neck...LOVE the neck pup, I'd recommend you do the same and throw a BB2 in the bridge. The new pups made a muddy guitar sound amazing -PLEASE factor in the cost of the pup change when you buy, it'll be worth it. Also, KNOW you'll be changing out the input jack on it (not a pleasant job) and likely the selector switch too (mine just crapped out). It's not fun to mod a Dot, what with the limited access, but it's a wotrthwhile job AND sometimes you have no choice (input jack and selector switch). are you going to get a Dot?
