Casino or Sheraton?

Recommended Posts

Now before people get all over my case, I am on a limited budget (saving up this summer), and want a good semi hollowbody sound. So the two options:

Casino: P90s, I hate the headstock though. The P90s are really nice, and help cut through

Sheraton: I feel the build quality is higher, feels more substantial, and I would swap out the pickups. Hopefully looking for one used, around 300 dollars, with my projected mods (P90 in the neck, seymour duncan jazz or alnico slash in the bridge) would be pretty versatile.

Any recommendations? Insights? Advice?

The Golden Rule is, "Try Before You Buy!"

Try several different models, and as many different guitars of each model as possible. One Sheraton might feel completely different from the one hanging next to it.

Don't discount the Swingster or the Wildkat (although I have to admit to being a little biased toward the 'Kat since I just bought one a couple days ago... [cool] )

What kind of budget do you have? What kind of music do you play, what sounds / tone are you after?

Happy hunting!

They're both very different guitars, in feel and sound. I have a Korean made Casino, and my cousin has what I assume to be a Korean made Sheraton (my uncle gave it to him, and he'd had it for a while).

You'd be best to try both of them first, and see what you think.

The P-94 is cleaner and has more treble' date=' with less mid-range than a humbucker, while having more bass than a P-90. [/quote']

I find my P-94 to be crisp with a great treble bite. They do have a good mid-range I think. The P-90 in my casino have alot more bass but maybe because it's fully hollow. It also sounds a little muddy on the low strings but very nice on the high strings!

Thought about it' date=' but I prefer the neck on the Sheraton and Casinos to the Dot.

Anyone have opinions on the Seymour Duncan Phat Cat that is a humbucker sized P90?

[/quote']

I cannot help you out with the Phat Cat sound, but I've been wanting to put some Seymour P-Rails into a Dot.

Humbucker, single, and P-90 sounds in one pup - it's all about versitility.

Have you considered the "special run" Riviera with 3 P93s? Sounds about right up your alley.

...the Casino is of equal quality in both sound and playability...

Recently, I tried a MIC EJ160-E and a MIC Casino. Same store, same day. The quality of the Casino was equal to the quality of my MIK Casino (+it had a Bigsby, which mine does not). The quality of the EJ160 was greatly inferior to the quality of my MIK EJ160. Whenever possible, try before you buy.

I have a lefty Sheraton and love it. You can’t go wrong with getting that. I love that guitar. The only thing I don’t care for is the weight but I use a big bass strap to help me with that.

Now I’m looking for a lefty Casino. So, eventually, as you save your bread, you might as well plan on getting both. That’s what I’m trying to do anyway.

[cool] I have a REAL '66 Casino, a '70 335, and a New P-93. [and 20 other axes] The P-93 has 3 volume, and 1 tone. This is Brilliant!! BECAUSE-- In the Neck p/u switch position. you get Neck/Middle. In the mid pos--ALL 3, in the Bridge pos.-- Mid and Bridge. Now-- For Some Strange Reason-- a P-93, with the p/u selector 1n neck or bridge pos gets "THAT STRAT QUACK"[bored] ; Only More like a Terradactyl [squawk],:-s than a Duck. Neat Huh?? Except For If/When ya don't WANT it. That's when--Ya turn off the Middle P/U, with the extra Volume pot, and it Behaves like any Other 2 P-90 equipped Ax. The '66 Casino, will feed back, and the bridge P/U on the Oldies is TOO LOW,[angry] and needs to be Shimmed up closer to the strings. The neck is also 3 frets deeper in the body [less access to the higher frets][cool] My '70 335 has an original Di Marzio SD Dual sound HB in the neck, and is coil tapped. That ax is the one I played on the Road forever. btw, I SAVED the Original neck HB that came in it.[biggrin] I picked up on the Ltd. ed.Alpine White Wilshire, [cuz my first Real Ax was a '65 walnut Wilshire with 2 [Gibson] "Melody Maker" Single Coils and Maestro Vibrola.] The Alpine White is good, Hot P/U's but the neck heel is --ODD. Plays/sounds great! The Faded Wilshires have the same heel as I remember the '65 had. The Ltd. Ed. Alpine White LP Studio--- ROCKS. [cool]

Rondo has some good guitars and Agile is great. I agree. As a lefty my choice is limited there, too. I used to have a HARM 1 but sold it because the neck was too thin for me. No lefty Casino around I can find in my price range except for some counterfeit ones some guy in Korea sells on eBay. I’d actually buy one from him if the headstock didn’t say Epiphone but said “Counterfeit” instead. At least it’d be honest. I heard they’re good guitars. Who knows, though.

So for me…. lefty Peerless Songbird….?

If you can actually get on in America, sure. They used to make the Casinos.

I have an Agile solid body, an AD-2300, and I really love it. It plays almost as well as my '71 goldtop. It's certainly as good as or better than any Epi I've ever played, and it was $269.
