It's the dark richness, like molasses with a crack-toffee laquer - I want to lick it after I've played it a while. The dark look is helped by not having that ghastly ghostly pale pick-guard. Some like 'em, some don't. It would (IMHO) look a lot better with a black or a torty guard, but I kinda like the no-pickguard look best.....
