I Love My Wife

Next week we're going on vacation and while we're away she's buying me something special. She's going to get me a strat to round out my guitar collection!

Now I just have to figure out which model I'm getting. I've narrowed it down to 4. An 87 Strat Plus for sale in a shop in the Toronto area, an Eric Clapton model, a Jeff Beck model, or an American Deluxe.

Not a fan of strats personally but I think Cookieman's green Clapton looks pretty darn fantastic.

I have always looked at the strat vs les paul debate as being a non issue. Neither guitar is really better as long as you are comparing high end strat to a Les Paul - but there are some situations where the tone of a strat is more ideal and vice versa.

The E.C. model..........

I was originally thinking of getting the '87 Strat Plus and might still, but I found an authorized Fender dealer directly across the street from the vintage shop selling the '87 who apparently have both the Beck and E.C. models in stock.

The thing about the '87 is that it's the first guitar to have Lace Sensors, the TBX control, and a roller nut. Also, being an 87 it's the first year the Strat Plus was produced and also the first year that Fender had made production models on US soil since CBS sold the company to it's current owners. Lots of reasons why this guitar could become collectable in the next few years. The E.C. and Beck models will probably hold value quite well too, but I suspect they're not as rare as the Strat Plus.

Ultimately I plan to let my ears and hands make the decision but the Strat Plus has a lot of historical background that could cause it to increase in value if people ever decide to get past this obsession with keeping everything (even on newer guitars) vintage spec.

I agree....The '87 would actually be my choice as well....The two members here who have the EC love it; I've never played one....

The thing about that choice making it tough is that the Clapton model is extremely versatile, which appeals to me. Only it may not have the same tuning stability since there's no roller nut or locking tuners. The Beck model is basically a Strat Plus without the Lace Sensors and TBX control (the original Beck and Clapton models from the same period of the strat plus also had Lace Sensors).

On the bright side, while there's not a single Long and McQuade in either New Brunswick or Ontario with a Clapton or Beck Strat in stock; I did find another store tha just happens to be across the street from where the Strat Plus is at that supposedly has both models in stock along with the American Deluxe. I'll likely be returning from Ontario with a strat one way or the other, but I'm seriously starting to consider purchasing online if I don't find the right guitar while in Ontario. I find it unlikely that will happen though considering there are more music stores in the area of Younge St and Bloor St in Toronto than there in all of New Brunswick. ;)

It's not about guitar a vs guitar b, I simply don't like strats. I like teles, jazzmasters, jaguars and mustangs though.

I guess my feeling would be to set a price max and go out to play different guitars that fit what you feel you want. Each is an individual.

Me, I'm not into Fender necks, so none would meet my standard of playability, but then I don't care for the Les Paul shape and "feel" either, although some necks are nice.

My youngest brother - who still's under 40 - just got an Epi LP and sez it's the first guitar he's owned (in over 20 years) that seemed to want to help his playing instead of fighting it.

Find a guitar of any sort that gives you that feeling and let it choose you.

if she really loved you....

she'd get you another gibson

59 original...[biggrin]

seriously though.....enjoy the strat..........sound great through a good tube amp.

She probably would if I found one within her budget that I liked. But, everything I've seen lately in her budget either has a bunch or parts swapped off it (I like keeping my instruments stock) or they've had some sort of repair work done to the neck (which could make it stronger than before, but I don't trust the repairs if I'm not familiar with the luthier that did it). Besides, I've already got 2 Gibsons (an SG Special and a Les Paul Push Tone) and a Gretsch (G5120). It's time to get the last of the guitars on my list that I don't have yet (strat). After that, maybe I'll see about adding more Gibbies - an SG Standard or 61 RI or a Les Paul Trad or Standard would be on the list next.

I'm actually adaptable with regards to the neck feel. As long as the neck isn't too thick I can get used to it. I have seen some Fender necks that are comparable to trying to grip the fat end of a baseball bat but as long as none of these models has this type of neck I'll be fine. I used to have a Japanese Squire which was basically a reissue of a 62 strat and I loved the neck but by far the most comfortable neck I've ever had is my SG Special.

The reasons to keep her just keep coming! :D

Now in addition to financing my G.A.S., she's surprised me this morning with tickets to go see Cheech And Chong when they perform at Casino New Brunsick in November. :)

Funny how 2 months ago I mentioned how cool it would be to see them and it was announced on Wednesday they were coming here and now she's bought tickets for me.
