awel Posted November 23, 2011 Share Posted November 23, 2011 Yesterday evening, I went to a small club here in Belgium to see Steve Lukather and it was amazing! I was not a 'real' fan until yesterday, but his sound, his touch, and his band ... he blows everything away. There were some of his typical soft rock music (like TOTO) but he played a lot kind of fusion jazzy stuff, amazing. Really if he comes with his band near your placeand if you like nice well thought music and perfect tone, get a ticket. One of the best and complete guitar player I have seen. bonzoboy Posted November 23, 2011 Share Posted November 23, 2011 Steve's a guy you don't hear of much any more although he is one of the most gifted guitarists on the planet.It's a pity that great guys like him drop off the radar screen while guys like Malmsteen stay on it even though they both came into prominence at about the same time.I guess you have to have a big mouth and bigger ego to stay in the limelight. Steve is still a much sought after studio musician and is still admired by his peers which is the most important thing I think because acceptance by musical greats carries a lot more creedance than being adored by a mob of shredding headbangers.You were really lucky to see this guy live,his playing is getting even better over the years. CaptainNemo68 Posted November 23, 2011 Share Posted November 23, 2011 One of the great things about Steve's guitar playing is he unselfishly plays what the song needs, which is sort of a trademark of a great studio musician. Some of his lead playing is relatively simple and some is intricate, but it is always for the best of the song. One of my favorites is the guitar solo for Breakdown Dead Ahead (Boz Scaggs). Steve did most of the other guitar tracks. Steve is/was a sought after studio musician during that time when he was not doing work with his band TOTO. bluesguitar65 Posted November 24, 2011 Share Posted November 24, 2011 Steve's a guy you don't hear of much any more although he is one of the most gifted guitarists on the planet.It's a pity that great guys like him drop off the radar screen while guys like Malmsteen stay on it even though they both came into prominence at about the same time.I guess you have to have a big mouth and bigger ego to stay in the limelight. Steve is still a much sought after studio musician and is still admired by his peers which is the most important thing I think because acceptance by musical greats carries a lot more creedance than being adored by a mob of shredding headbangers.You were really lucky to see this guy live,his playing is getting even better over the years. Actually, Steve came to the scene way before Yngwie was ever known. Steve was already established as the guitarist for TOTO back in the 70s. Yngwie made is debut and got noticed with the L.A. metal band "Steeler". It was Mike Varney who had a column in Guitar Player Magazine that discovered Yngwie during the early 80s that got him the gig with Steeler. After Steeler, Yngwie formed Alcatraz with Graham Bonnet of Rainbow. Man, I'm really showing my age here? Between the two, Steve is much more well rounded player. But I can listen to Steve all day. Steve reminds me of Neil Schon. Neil was with Santana at 15. Steve was with Boz Scaggs at 17. Both naturally talented and both have paid their dues by working hard at their job. When I read about others I can't help but feel unimpressed.
