Spiritinthesky
From www.thisdayinmusic.com Nov 5th 2005, guitarist Link Wray died aged 76. Wray was credited with inventing 'fuzz' guitar after punching a hole in a speaker giving him a distorted guitar sound. Famous for his 1958 US No.16 single 'Rumble' which was banned on several radio stations, on the grounds that it glorified juvenile delinquency. A rare feat for a song with no lyrics. MikeRom
I realized I had no idea what this song was. Pulled it up on youtube a few minutes ago, very raw recording isn't it? Kinda sounded to me like they were doing a sound check or something and it was released as is. EDIT: Listening to a few more of his song, it was definitley on purpose Great feedback

deepblue
Actually the first rock n' roll song was "Rocket 88" in 1951. Legend has it the amp speaker was damged creating a fuzz sound. Good ol' Ike Turner.....to bad he was a woman beater.

littlekenny
I heard that Claptons "woman tone" originally came from a screwed up speaker as well, I don't if its true though
saturn
I also heard that Ray Davies of The Kinks used to slash his speaker cones with a razor to get them to distort. "You kids don't know how lucky you have it with your fancy distortion pedals....back in our day....."
