Agree. Marty Scwartz is a great teacher and doesn't seem to be full of himself. Some others are painful and painfully slow but you can't please everyone. Seen some just wrong out there too. Otherhand some understated and really excellent. There was a lesson on Honky Tonk woman, a song I have played for 40 years, incorrectly it turns out. Had an ah ha moment recently. Really a lot of fun during these pandemic, war, social division days that we are in. Fun to play and reach a few milestones.

Thanks guys, we will practice 4 times that week before the gig so I definitely want to be prepared and not be a drag on anyone because all of us will be prepared, a bunch of OCDers. I forgot to mention that the other thing that can be done now that didn't exist back then is instantaneously looking up how to play something on YouTube or the like. Is saving me hours.

Getting together to do the Arkansas Alzheimers benefit gig in July. Going to be big with an estimate of 700 people (actually a combination of activities all centered around the benefit). I just started practicing. Most of the songs we have played before, last time 4 years ago. I realized I had zero memory of how to play them never mind which part I am supposed to play. A lot of songs would probably make you upchuck (stairway to heaven, freebird) but I am excited to play them because the folks at this concert will go nuts. Now the reason for the post. In 1978-79 when I was playing 3 times a week, I would haul my own gear (which was my guitar, an amp and the only peripheral I had, a talk box). I would tune by ear before the gig and I would have notes taped to the floor as well as the song list. Now I have an iPad loaded with the lyrics and chords in an app called setlists, music tuned down a half a step (so we geezers can sing them) on an app called Anytune which lets me play things at any speed up to full so I can learn the solos (Slash and Jimmy Page) and I can practice in a little room with either headphones or use an attenuator. I wish that I had what I have now...when I was younger. For grins here is our setlist (singers are parenthetical). I like to post threads to get something out of it. So here goes, how do you prep? It's a kind of connection on another plane, sort of surreal. I played in a band in the 70s where it was my life. Practiced 2-3 times a week. Gigged twice to three times a month. I quit and went to college and then post grad then career and when I turned 50 in 2010 the old band (except one) got back together for a reunion 33 years after we used to play. The other guitar player is incredibly talented and can sing Robert Plant and Brad Delp as well as nail Slash's solo on Sweet Child as well as a lot more. We got together to "practice" before the birthday party and started playing songs we hadn't played together since the 70s. Would play the whole song. We gave each other looks that communicated song changes, your turn to fill, wait until next go round, etc. Then we played the harmony solo for Can't Get Enough. Not a hard thing but it just flowed. The small audience of wives went nuts. It was incredible. Goose bumps and the lot. One of the reasons I love playing. So yes, it happens. I appreciate it when it does, like so many other things these days.

I've learned in the past 3 days that most folks here with a widely disparate set of beliefs, opinions, and political leanings can actually express them and agree to disagree with only a few **** you's or **** offs. We must be getting older.

Would have to be taken in context when it comes to me because the pandemic was a part of it, an added feature of the things that happened. In the last 3 yearsI went through fire loss, the death of my mother, my best friend from training days, and my brother in law, a colon tumor that required a second wider resection (the kind of tumor that Steve Jobs had so I take it seriously), and a big change of jobs. So what did I learn?...sounds pretty dumb but here goes.....2 parts Take time to appreciate and smell the freaking flowers Choose to be happy because it is a choice. Phillip

Thank you. They were pretty determined to make a life there and they love it over there but had no way of predicting this. They went through the Korean War as children. What's funny is that I was with 2 New Yorkers at the time (My dad was from Brooklyn and it was with his friend's kids that were my age). They said it happened up there. Can't believe you said that.

Not sure why I am posting this. I have to tell someone and I'm not on FB or any other social media. Maybe the collective power of good thoughts might make a difference. I'm not religious or I would ask for prayers. This is 100% true. Here goes. My in laws lived through the Sylmar fire in LA in 2017 with only what they could grab and came to live with us in Malibu. They separated soon afterwards, stress related. One year later my father in law was living with us when our house burned down in the Woolsey fire in 2018. Fires have names here because they are so frequent. My wife and I were in San Diego and he was at the house, grabbed our dog Brynn and made it out alive. My in laws got back together a year later and then their son, my brother in law, died last year. Extremely traumatic. Last November they decided they still had things to do in life and they moved to join a Presbyterian mission in Ukraine. They are there now and we haven't heard anything. It is so incredible that I don't know what to say or think.

Agree 90%, I still love Hey Jude and can listen to it any time. I may be sick of Am pie but it is a great sing along with a group of people and doesn't require huge practice. Any other suggestions Sgt.? What would you play at a party?

I remember being on vacation on Pensacola beach in 1972 and the song was played on the radio. As soon as the song finished the DJ said that was so good he was going to play it again and then he did. It was the first and only time in my life that I ever heard that happen. Not even with the Beatles. btw thanks for posting. I am going to a meeting in San Diego this weekend and am going to get together with a few other guitarists and do an acoustic jam for the after meeting beach party. I'll download these lyrics and we'll play this, not sure why I didn't think of it. Any other suggestions? 😁
