  1. So...... I purchased a bare right handed Hofner HCT-500/1 Contemporary Violin Cavern Bass Sunburst from a Luthier in California that used to be a Hofner Warranty Repair Service Person for $250.... All it has is the tuners and he told me it's brand new. The goal is to make it a Lefty so I ordered some spruce material to patch the control panel hole, ordered the Nitro transparent red and butterscotch lacquer for the sunburst effect, (I already have black nitro). Ordered three cans of clear nitro. Ordered rosewood neck binding to replace the white stuff. I ordered the pickup surround bezel (that was f-ing expensive). Fortunately I already have the diamond pups, control panel and I know I have a tailpiece somewhere and hopefully I can find it. Where I'm getting conflicting info is painting nitro over the poly finish. I was told by a couple of cabinet / furniture makers is to sand the poly with 800 grit to give the nitro a good mechanical bite and to minimize the sanding witness lines. And as long as the poly is completely cured you will not have no issues. A few Luthiers stated strip the whole thing and start form scratch (which I do not want to do). Do any of you have first hand experience doing this?
  2. I have me fingers crossed.... Right now I have .008's string set on the slab just to try and cut down on the tension.... It's like "who needs a tremolo" with those light strings... lol. I'll eventually step up to .009's once I feel the repair is going to hold.
  3. Plays and sounds like a typical Gibson Les Paul Standard.
  4. I went with 1200 grit and an eraser as a sanding block and sprits. Then I used medium compound, the fine compound then swirl remover.
  5. Actually when Georges Les Paul was refinished in the mid 60's, Gibson painted over the Les Paul transfer...... why???? who knows. I don't think Les and Gibson were on the best of terms during those times.
  6. In Pauls "Find My Way" video his Cavern bass seems to make a cameo????
  7. I used the StewMac Swirl Removal and hand rubbed. Then followed with the Gibson polish.
  8. The Lucy Project is now complete!!!! Although the UV lamp barely did anything and didn't want that to turn into a 6 month adventure I just decide to go with guitar as is. Really happy with headstock repair even though I wasn't able to completely mask the repair, it still looks better than it did in its original cosmetic state. Working with nitrocellulose lacquer was much easier than I thought it would be, just as long as you follow StewMac's instructions to the tee, and also wear PPE and use in a well ventilated area. Since I had all the electronics and hardware, all I needed to buy was the lacquer kit from Stewmac and TRC. Total for the guitar a tad over $1100
  9. In the middle of watching the GET BACK Documentary for the sixth time
  10. That's actually a good idea. 🤘
  11. They do a great job but their buy in 3 and 6 plans are a little bit of a ripoff. The PayPal "pay in 4" is much cheaper to do when you checkout.
  12. My wife has a black ebony wood hair fork she's gonna give me.
  13. Nothing like what the east has to go through......
  14. We just had a state of emergency in SoCal with a low of 40 degrees F.
  15. Being that this is my first time I'm going to start with 1000 grit then finish with 2000. It will take a bit longer but I want to make sure I don't sand through the lacquer..... which is why I sprayed 12 coats.
  16. No This individual has a habit of turning other members threads into a **** show and it's starting to get old.
  17. The hell you weren't. You quoted me then added your typical self righteous view / response as if everyone is supposed to think or support your line of thinking. Then you get your small band of blind allegiance followers that think your replies are the greatest publications since splitting the atom. If this thread was put here to question other folks view on what they enjoy by trying find some sort of twisted avenue to make one feel as if they has some sort of flaw in that view..... this thread will have a very short shelf life.
  18. How did my response influence you to pound out the above absurdly out of context response????????
  19. Positions 4 and 6 on my L6-S rotary knob put both pickups out of phase..... So it is done through the wiring.
  20. I just dig what Jimi was all about even though there's a bunch of Beatles tribute instruments in the cave.
