My 1969 Guild D40 had neck finish wear that I had put on it and was a bit proud of. Had a guy reset the neck and he removed the original dark finish that Guild used on the mahogany, neck , sides and back. The mahogany that was exposed is beautiful but I miss that play wear

I have the same model and year guitar, DR Sunbeams 12s are now my favorite strings. Make sure you follow the directions for using these strings. ( round core, don't cut strings until brought to pitch ) "Don't you panic Don't you panic give it one more try"

These details have interested me also, ie bridge pin hole placement differences on basically the same body shapes. Maybe bracing differences AJ vs Standard. There are highly regarded Gibson enthusiast on the form, I don't know how many builders. As far as fret board length, as long as neck joint at body are the same, then just aesthetics. Maybe they move bridge placement for the saddle location differences. Great response to our latest A Hole

Maybe the new bridge is thinner, to help with the action, and avoid neck set at the time it was installed. Looks like it's time for a reset now, good that he left the original bridge with it, the newer bridge looks like some nice work. With a reset the old bridge may bring the string height at the bridge to spec

OP here, having had this mod done on two other guitars. I found string changing and pin fit the most beneficial of this procedure. When changing strings, I put a small bend at the ball end then insert the string in the pin hole and keeping the string in the slot of the bridge I then pull the ball end up to the bridge plate, I can feel when the ball has made contact with with the bridge plate. Then I insert the bridge pin. ie I feel the ball end contact better with a slotted bridge than a non slotted bridge or slotted pin Thanks for the comments on the guitars looks, It sounds great to. And yes I guess it's been pimped 😃

I didn't mention in my post that the pin holes were reamed for a slightly over sized pin for perfect fit. Good point Lars

Not that I noticed, it has always been a great sounding guitar to me. But I my be still drunk on the tone of these sunbeam strings, on my second set. I like the look of them and the weight. Guitar sounds great Yes, this is the only bridge I have had ramped ( pin hole placement ) the other 2 were sloted

I've had this done on two other guitars, string changing is much easier at the bridge. Had the luthier I have been going to for years now, perp my 45 for solid pins and ramp the bridge. My 45 has the pin holes close to the back edge of the bridge, the ramping increased string break angle from the saddle, which was always shallow because of the pin hole placement

Ive had the guitar since it was new 50years ago. It has always sounded good. He the luthier thinks he may have sanded the finish off making the top thinner

I have a guitar thats been refinished, my first good guitar a 1969 Guild D40 It was in a guys shop for a neck set and back crack repaired, he must of had some trouble getting the neck off and damaged the finish. He removed all the finish and resprayed it with nitro. Guild used a dark stain, he didn't stain it left it natural showing the beautiful mahogany.This guitar has always sounded good. I use another luthier now, he thinks it sounds so good because of the refinish
