  1. Wow a lot of answers on this topic! For the OP- clearly as you have read and maybe knew already, it's not just the rosewood saddle that people complain about on the ADJ bridges- it's the thick bridge plate and all the hardware that is perceived to dampen vibration of the top. I have a '68 j45 adj with the adj bridge, and rather than change the whole thing permanently, i opted for a $20 drop-in bone saddle from philadelphia luthier supply. it took 15 minutes to install, and the original bridge is in a little bag in the case for if and when i want to swap it back in or my descendants sell it for beer money. tonally it brightened up the mids and highs but kept the overall sound of the guitar in tact. Im very happy with it.
  2. Love a good zombie thread that brings up something so silly! that's OP is so funny, imagine the gall to come onto this board and in post numero uno be like "WE ALL HATE IT RIGHT?!" the issue, as others have stated better above, is that gibson didn't do what FMIC did and just have an offshore version and a domestic version of the same guitar with the same cosmetics. That said if this is an issue for you, don't buy the epiphone version of a Gibson guitar- you're clearly going to have a complex about it. I've seen tons of live shows big and small where the performers are playing epiphone- sometimes vintage but a lot of times just the $500 MIK casino. You know who doesn't care about headstock shape? Those guys. Be like those guys.
  3. Epiphone only has one acoustic model made in the USA by Gibson - the Epiphone USA Texan. They just released the Epiphone Inspired by Gibson line with the Hummingbird, J200, and J45. All made overseas. People seem to really like em! There is also one kind of inbetween - the early 00's Epiphone Elite J200. made in japan, great quality.
  4. When I was 12 years old I would hang out at the music store down the street from me- close enough to ride my bike and bother the guys hanging out- i couldnt even play anything, i just looked at the stuff on the wall. One day they had a case lying on the ground, a guitar they hadn't put out yet. It was a korean Sorrento in burgandy mist with the epi bigsby. My 12yo self thought it was horrible- a pink guitar! Now it's my grail!
  5. 1. a good clean microfiber cloth if you're going at it and getting it sweaty. there are cleaners and polishes but it looks to be in great shape, i'd just leave it alone. 2. that's a solid wood bridge with an adjustable saddle, again, probably leave it alone. some people dont like the adj saddle and swap out the whole bridge. I bought a bone bridge that drops in (do no harm!) to my adj bridge that sounds a bit brighter. Philadelphia luthier supply 3. acoustic strings. make sure they're sitting right in the saddle, they could be wonky because of wear 4. tuners look great, if they're stiff they can be oiled, there are videos out there on how, or take it somewhere 5. the nut is narrow- it's going to take a little getting used to playing the neck, but not impossible. start working on this one and keep an eye on where that SJ ends up!
  6. Don't know how i missed this post originally but just caught wind of that video from Gibson over the weekend- really excited to see it come to life. and it looks like it's coming with the adidas sticker!
  7. Even if he leaves a bad review, everyone will laugh at it! I wouldnt sweat it and would probably just stop responding- you've done your part.
  8. You've done more than enough to offer to show him. If he can't be bothered to learn how to change strings, he shouldnt be buying or playing guitar.
  9. six years later I stand by my assessment- 70s Gibson acoustics definitely havent seen much of a shift in desirability, certainly not in the same way as the electrics have!
  10. I believe with that many birds it's considered a Flock of Gibsons
  11. I've had amazon slap a shipping label on the plastic of a record sleeve and ship it like that. they dont understand that guitars are shipped in those boxes all packed together and put int a shipping container. quite a different story if that box is used to actually ship to a customer
  12. bummer. post it to imgur and link it here. gibson doesn't want to pay to host photos
  13. Good sleuthing! I love that the specs that are on what is widely considered the greatest Gibson acoustics aren't exactly what they deem as marketable these days!
  14. just eyeballing the photos, non-tapered headstock and the neck looks a bit chonky but probably "for the modern player" the SJ looks sweet, probably the closest ill come to the real deal
  15. There's a pretty good chance Ted Nugent has it. Good luck dealing with him.
  16. really really cool design! love that she kept the tree of life with the diamond holes, mixing it up and making sure it's an original design.
  17. Pete Yorn has really only played slope gibsons- mostly a j45 but sometimes a dove https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ff_NndhJLJg
  18. I watched it a bit before this post because youtube recommended it to me, and i admit i think he's correct in how Gibson is still marketing themselves and their guitars in this very 20th century "will turn you into the next rock god" vs developing appreciation for their guitars and developing yourself musically. 99% of guitar players young and old are pretty much bedroom players (maybe with an occasional or regular small gig/bar night) and realize that even if they're doing something creatively really innovative or cool, it probably won't scale up beyond small clubs and creating a lot of free digital content. When I was in DC about 15 years ago they had the Gibson showroom there that let small touring acts roll through and borrow stuff for their gig or do a live session- would love to see them invest in smaller, more diverse acts like that the way fender has lately.
  19. I've been GASing for a cutaway two pickup jazz box lately and wondering if anyone out there has recommendations or thoughts on their zeniths or emperors? Probably planning to avoid the modern lines like joe pass or the swingsters, but interested in hearing about the MIJ 80s stuff or earlier!
  20. Dang that's right on... all i knew was that i had seen it on the wall in every acoustic room in every GC ive been in since about 2002.
  21. at first glance i thought it was a hummingbird studio, but as others have said the pickguard is a songwriter pickguard. the songwriter has a belly-down or the moustache bridge though so I believe your guitar has a replaced bridge on it. congrats on the new guitar! looks great!
  22. still a good buyer's trick though! I think the tone of this thread is more "what attributes would you overpay for" and certainly rarity is at the top of the list. If you have your eye on something that doesn't come up all that often, you may pay whatever it costs. Then if that's the only sale of that particular guitar, that's the going rate, so you only paid market rate! If anyone's seen a 90s epi sorrento in burgandy mist, i'm willing to overpay the market rate 😄
  23. I bought my L48 for $220. Asking price was $200, the guy got a ton of emails and phone calls on it but i was first in the door and he respected the deal. I figured if I just gave him an extra $20 like i had counted the cash wrong, he'd think HE was the one getting away with something. Totally worked!
  24. Great video but is the Yeti angle saying that you're gonna leave your coolers to your kids?
