Rosemarie...

I guess I'll have to agree with you... I don't think the piece with Jett was done in a good key for her, nor a particularly comfortable arrangement. I'll wager she could do better. I'm guessing too that it was a bit younger voice. I have a theory that some of the flash may be lost, but in the 50s and potentially into the 60s one's voice actually can be worked better as an instrument. Sinatra is IMHO a perfect example.

Hmmmm, well Joan's version is nice enough, but "I" didn't really hear much of

"Joan" in that version...that is to say, she didn't bring much of her own style

to it. We've already got Leslie Gore's more restrained version, on record. Maybe,

when Joan does it "live" it's more in Her own style, I don't know. I think even

Leslie does it rawer and more emotionally, "Live" than her recorded take. That

(milder version) was probably Leslie's record company's decision, more than her own?

But, it's always been a great song! And, the potential, for Joan to do a really

"ballsy," "Joan Jett" version is certainly there. It's almost the perfect song,

for her more defiant, and rawer emotional treatment. I, for one, would really like

to see her DO that!

Dusty Springfield, did a nice version, as well. With just a bit more of

her own style, in the mix.

Anyway, just my 2-cent's worth... [biggrin]

I looked at this Jett piece and it's about as good as any.

In fact, it furthers a theory of mine that "we" should think more of "versions" than "covers." I liked the song when the Everly Brothers did it, Orbison... just heard the Jett version and it's fine. Ditto Emmylou and Parsons. Ditto ditto ditto on what's an interesting tune and good lyric.

So... Jett's is as real as anyone's and kinda goes along with my personal feeling that it's a real quality tune and lyric that one can grab and make one's own.

Milod...I agree...folks doing "covers" should (IMHO) do them,

in Their Own Style/Treament, as opposed to trying to come closer

to the originals. We already HAVE those originals. Like when

Joe Cocker did his cover of The Beatles "A Little Help From My

Friends," I LOVED it...because it was HIS take, style, etc....

and, an awesome version, it was!

It's ok, to learn something "just like the original," but then

learn it, and add your own spin, instead of just copying every

thing, over and over, again.

IMHO, as always.

Female's - Both Wilson sisters of Heart - Stevie Nicks - Janis Joplin - Aretha Franklin

Male's - Steve Perry, from Journey - Robert Plant - Geoff Tate,of Queensryche - Ozzy Osborne, because his voice is so recognizable and dam good besides. To me Ozzy sounds like he sings around 1/4 step flat but it fits so well with the music he sings. - Ronnie James Dio, sorely missed!!

I can't believe this voice hasn't been mentioned yet....

the late/great Danny Joe Brown !

am I the ONLY Southerner here??

No, you are not. I grew up (and still live) just down the road from Jacksonville, and while I do love me some Molly Hatchet,

I'd not list his voice as being a favorite. Better voices from the same genre...

Ronnie Van Zandt

Huey Thomasson and Billy Jones

Ricky Medlocke

Donnie Van Zandt

Tommy Caldwell

And what about this one? What a set of pipes...
