mbenzon Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 Hi guys I'm new to this forum and looking to buy myself LP standard or classic. One guitar in particular came into my sight because of good asking price. Can you help me to confirm that it is real LP standard and not the fake one. Here are some pictures i have. http://tinypic.com/r/29emwqc/8 http://tinypic.com/r/ind1ll/8 http://tinypic.com/r/f37txy/8
mbenzon Posted September 11, 2015 Author Posted September 11, 2015 How can you tell? I'm not an expert so can you explain?
pippy Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 It's a fake. Not a shadow of a doubt. Not trying to be a smartarse but if you really want to know why we know it's a fake then the best thing you can do is to learn to spot them for yourself. There are plenty of very good sites which point out the major errors overlooked by the counterfeiters including an official Gibson section right here in their website. Most folks here are fairly reluctant to point out where the criminals are getting the details wrong so unless someone feels like listing the mistakes you'll just have to take our word for it. Or, alternatively, you could always buy it because I'm sure it'll be priced as a bit of a bargain. But don't say you weren't told it was a fake before you bought it. It's entirely up to you. Pip.
BigKahune Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 . Make that 3 fake votes. Good you took the time to ask before buying. .
Guest Farnsbarns Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 Have you been looking for a LP for a while? I seem to remember a similar username posting asking if a guitar was a fake about 6 months ago. If it was you you can see there's a lot of them about. I would suggest you Google and read and look on the relevant section on the Gibson site. Post any you're looking at here. People will gladly steer you right.
capmaster Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 It was a wise decision to ask here first. The guitar shown by the pictures you linked is clearly a counterfeit. It's best to stay away from it. Did you already consider buying a new Epiphone? They make very fine ones like the Les Paul 1960 Tribute Plus Outfit model. I own one of these as a complement to my Gibson Les Paul guitars, and I love it!
skilsaw Posted September 12, 2015 Posted September 12, 2015 Maybe I'm the sucker here. I couldn't tell a good fake if my life depended on it so I buy my guitars from a Gibson dealer. It is expensive but I believe I know what I am getting.
'Scales Posted September 12, 2015 Posted September 12, 2015 best to assume any Les Paul is a fake if its cheap and bought from somewhere you can't just take it back to. I don't know much, but a casual glance at the second pic was enough even for me. Like the guys say, lots of in depth info sources on the web. good luck in your quest for an LP.
mbenzon Posted September 14, 2015 Author Posted September 14, 2015 Hi Thx for your help. The price was very cheap so i decided to give it a try, but with first look it was clearly a fake LP. I returned it to seller. Cheers.
Pesh Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 Good call on that; if you're investing in a Gibson, definitely look into it properly - buy from someone trusted where possible, and if it seems to good to be true - it probably is.

First, no fret end nibs and the post-hole for the bridge is a screen instead of a post. The pick guard looks a little weird too. If the pictures were better I'm sure I could spot other things too.
Eracer_Team Posted September 16, 2015 Posted September 16, 2015 wow I thought this one was a bit tougher to spot.. yes I did see a couple of things.. but over all a "good" fake.
Guest Farnsbarns Posted September 16, 2015 Posted September 16, 2015 wow I thought this one was a bit tougher to spot.. yes I did see a couple of things.. but over all a "good" fake. Really? The body isn't even the right shape! Took me less than a second.
Eracer_Team Posted September 17, 2015 Posted September 17, 2015 I just thought the long-ish looking body was due to poor pictures.. but there where other keys that did it for me.
Sailjunkie Posted September 17, 2015 Posted September 17, 2015 Interesting to note that the serial number seems to be real...Nashville made, February 10, 2007, production number 265.

All the fakes come up like that. It's easy, they just follow the Ydddyrrr format and the guitar dater project will decode it as genuine. There's no database there, it's just a decoder. If you know the format you can enter any correctly formatted number and it will come up with a result.
