Gato Barbieri R.I.P.

Recommended Posts

The death has been announced of the Argentinian tenor saxophonist Leandro Gato Barbieri, 83, in New York.

He had been inactive for some years but in his jazz prime was a tremendously powerful and original sax player with an unique and ferocious tone.

I still have his albums from the early 1970s; "Fenix" and "Under Fire" are classics of the period. Guitarists Joe Beck and John Abercrombie are featured on these recordings along with Stanley Clarke, Ron Carter, Lonnie Liston Smith, Airto Moreira and others.

He composed the score to "Last Tango in Paris" (a Marlon Brando movie remembered for an unusual use of butter), recorded for Impulse records and made more radio-friendly stuff in the 80s and later on.

A great improviser, composer and player. R.I.P.
