Thanks for the help MY 1975 J-50 has a 2-piece back....just no binding between....I can't imagine a J-45 would be different.
ksdaddy
Remember, this is Gibson we're talking about. I know they sometimes had laminated sides, or laminated backs, or both, and it wasn't something that would be catalogued. "Oh look, a stack of laminated back blanks, Fred, use these up first so I don't have to inventory them".

zombywoof
While I have not spent a lot of time with Gibsons built after 1964, I have never seen a mahogany body J45 with a slab back. Harmonys yeah but Gibsons no. The only Gibsons I have run across which sported a one-piece back were bult with laminate maple bodies. DanvillRob
When Gunman asked about 2-piece backs, I presumed he meant mirrored pieces laid together...not laminated like plywood.

I assumed he meant a solid one piece back as the J45 never sported a decorative inlay between the two back pieces. Gibson though made their own laminate which was two even layers of the same wood glued together. Back in the day I would think it cost them more to build with laminate than solid wood as it involved more labor and produced more scrap. Dave F
They were doing laminated backs on the Gospel in '72. Maybe they did some J45's around the same time.

The Gospel took a page from the Guild playbook and had a pressed laminate arched back. Gibson though had been building guitars with laminate bodies since the mid-1930s. zombywoof
Another question because I was not paying attention. Was the laminate back on the J160E one or two pieces?
