I didn't want to fork over 750.00 for a 1x12 cabinet......so I did this instead!!

I bought a 20 watt Friedman head locally at a very good deal. I was thinking about getting the matching 1x12 cabinet for it. Well.....after tax it would have been 750 bucks!!

I got to thinking about it a bit. So I decided to make my own...I was just going to rabbit bit the sides and all but I got to talking to my buddy about it who owns a nice wood shop with a dove tail saw. He said get my wood and come over.

Heck yeah!!

I did just that. I went out and purchased select pine from Lowes, bought a pre owned 12" 70 watt Weber Gray Wolf speaker off of ebay along with a leather handle, input jack and metal cab feet.  I cut all of the boards to the width and length I wanted. I chose an open back design and made it 22" wide, 20-1/2" tall and 11-3/4" deep. I had to help run the rear side of the dove tail saw while he ran the front. I glued and screwed the cab together. The speaker baffle is made out of 3/8" plywood. I free handed the opening for the speaker with a jig saw. I bought the material I used for the speaker cover from Hobby Lobby. I brushed on a 3 coats of clear and sanded between coats. I had the clear finish left over from a previous project.  I had the wire and terminals already so I soldered up a wire to the speaker with a new Switchcraft input jack.

It took about 4 evenings total of my spare time.....Total money all in is less than 215 bucks!!

I owe my friend lunch this week and that figure is included in the total!!

I have about 5 to 6 hours in the build.

I tried to get the pics to embed in my post the old fashion way but I need a new photo hosting site as imgur sucks and has changed.  You will have to click on the links. No photo yet of the head on the cab due to the stupid photo host site I use.  Sorry!!

Can someone recommend a good photo host site?

  • bigtim changed the title to I didn't want to fork over 750.00 for a 1x12 cabinet......so I did this instead!!

I use Imgur.

Here is how I insert photos. It may not be the fastest but it works.

1st Upload your image to Imgur

2nd Copy where it says BBCode.

3rd Paste it in the post, like this.

4th Delete [img]  and [/img] so it looks like this.

5th put your cursor after ,jpeg and hit enter and you see a picture of a small dog. Your dog may vary in size or be a snake or car or guitar.

3/8" sounds thin for a baffle?

But I never built a cabinet.

Back in my electric bar gigging days I used Marshall, Peavey, Mesa and or Carvin cabinets and never really gave em' much thought. I preferred open back cabs for smaller bars though so as to not kill people...
