I am a member over at mylespaul.com and very rarlely visit here. Id like to say thank you. IMO this is the bottom line. People buy Gibson over Epi because there more worried about the name on the headstock than anyhing else. If I hear "yea its good but its no Gibson" one more time Im gonna come flyin through my PC. I tend to say I wasn't an idoit and bought a $3000 guitar' date=' got bent over backwards by Gibson. Put the average person in a room with Jimmy Page paying my Epi and then give him a "real" LP. I bet at least 95% of us out there can't tell difference. If you think you can ..........you can't so don't even!!!! Gibson sells there stuff for that much because they can. Theres a noob out there every minute buying a GIbby who can't play thre ****ing thing.......AT ALL. THATS WHY GIBBY SELL'S THERE STUFF FOR SO MUCH. Our hero's play them Becasue they could care less about money so it makes no difference to them + they dont play for the F in things hope I didnt offend anyone. Im going back to mylespaul now. Thanks guys.

I hear what you're saying, and maybe we should just be grateful that we live in an age when a good, playable instrument can be had for so little money.

I am very good friends with a former guitar teacher of mine, and although he uses a '68 LP Custom as his sole electric guitar (for teaching, gigging and recording), he also has an 'archive' of instruments that he bought back in the day. One night he let me play two of them.

First up was a Kay "Red Devil" from the early 1960s, a mid-priced guitar in its day. And not much cop, to be honest.

Next up was a guitar that had my jaw on the floor, because one of my personal guitar-player icons was so famously linked with this model: a Vox Teardrop. Quite expensive new, so my friend told me, but still quite a bit cheaper than a Fender was in Britain in those days. And yes, this one was white. Very, very exciting. After playing it for a little while, however, I realized why many of the photographs of early Stones recording sessions show Brian Jones with a Fender Telecaster propped up against his amp...and why he soon changed over to ES-330s and Firebirds as his main guitars...

Or one can consider George Harrison's opinion of his Resonet Futurama: "a dog to play...It had the worst action."

Nowadays, we can pick up an Epiphone Faded G-400 or Dot Studio for $300, and after a little tweaking we then start arguing about how it compares to a Gibson that costs hundreds (or even thousands) of dollars more...Sounds like a good position to be in, really.

And a Kia rides down the road and it's wheels go round and round just like a Ferrari or Lamborghini.

I'm glad you're not in charge of invention and sale of all the worlds retail goods, we'd all be wearing plaid pants and pocket tee shirts riding in our Yugo with the fresh ocean breeze blowing in our face whilest we strum our lovely Epi LP Special taking a cool tall sip of Walmart Great Value soda between sweet savored puffs on a generic cigarette.

Ah...what a life that would be.

Yes...you need to go back to that other forum. Post haste.

Hi all,

I just wanted to add my .02 to the discussion. I’ve been playing guitar since 1968, my first electric was a Fender Telecaster, left handed. Since then I’ve owned almost every major brand of electric and acoustic guitar. Like most of us GAS is a bad disease. So when after a 15 year electric guitar hiatus, I started looking, it was for a 335 style. I’m fortunate to live in a major metro area where “quality” guitar stores are in abundance. After looking at a number of Gibson ES335’s and Epiphone dots, I came to the conclusion that an Epi was a good base guitar to start. Also being left handed the lefty choices were limited. After finding a 2004 dot with case for 299.00, I started the mods. Basically I striped the dot down to the body /neck. Epi doesn’t make the Casinos in lefty anymore and I wanted the P90 sound, so I installed Seymour Duncan “Phat Cats” , 4 new CTS 500K pots, 2 Sprague .022 Orange Drop caps, Switchcraft toggle and ¼” jack, Gotoh nickel bridge/tailpiece, aged black speed knobs and Grover nickel “keystone” tuners . Total cost $315 including shipping. So, total for the guitar and upgrades and labor, $665.00.

I’m not a beginner and I’m not unable or unwilling to pay for quality, but when I looked at the fit and finish of the Gibson 335’s and the Epiphone dot’s, side by side, there really wasn’t much that would make me spend $2000.00 more. If I were making my living making music, well heck I’d probably be getting some kind of endorsement anyway. Right now I own as good a guitar as I need and one that I’m sure will last the rest of my life and then some.

As I drive around and I see guys in their 40’s/50’s driving hot little sports cars, aimed at the younger generation, I think (much the same as when I read Marx Brothers post) sorry about your penis! It’s all about ego or lack thereof.

Gibson hasn’t been Gibson since what, since they moved from Kalamazoo, since Norlin bought them, I mean really guys, is Fender the same since Leo sold it to CBS?

Here's another nice youtube vid, about an Epi LP vs the Gibson LP.

What I find most interesting in this video:

1) He repeatedly says the Epi comes "very close" to the Gibson sound

2) His only beef with the Epi is that he has trouble keeping it in tune. If you skip to 6:00 in the video, he will start explaining why a guitar can get out of tune and what you can do about it. He doesn't mention any modding he's done on the Epi, but then he grabs the Gibson and here my jaw went to the floor. He says he couldn't get it in tune properly either, and then begins to sum up the hardware he's changed ON THE GIBSON to finally have it the way he wants it!

3) Right after that, he picks up both the LP and the Gibson and concludes that the Epi is great value, sounds almost the same like a Gibson but 3 times cheaper. I dunno, but "great value" seems a bit of an understatement here.

And my opinion about the vid in the first post, I watched it twice. The second time I just jumped somewhere right in the middle and I could not tell which guitar he was playing until he put it away and grabbed the other one. Nuff said?

I've done the same comparison tests at GC and have ALWAYS found a remarkable difference between Epi's and Gibsons. Right now I have an Epi Dot pick up in the bridge position and a Gibson 57' CLassic in the neck position of an Epi Joe Pass. The difference between the pick ups is huge. And I don't mean the obvious difference in tone, the volume, quality, clarity etc are all far superior with the gibson pick up.

Since I play mostly chord melody stuff, the sound of a clean chord is most important, and this is where Epi and Gibson pickups really differ. The Epi's are always muddy.

But...an Epi with a pick up change can be more than good enough for any guitarist.

Ok' date=' take what you just said, relate it back to my original post in this thread, then put the lime in the coconut and call me in the morning. I think you'll see my original point then.8-[ [/quote']

Yes, your first post slated the player's tone, so why bring a statement like this in order to justify your criticism of him:

"So, you all think that's a good tone and something you'd want to compare things to? I have an old Sears Silvertone that sounds better than that noise he's making."

As you know, tone comes partly from the gear but mostly from the player. Why not just say that instead of slate the guy?

If you are going to slag off somebody's playing the only way to justify your right to do this is to post a clip of your own playing. The impression I get is that you may well be a guitar god and, if you are, I'd like to see you in action.

Incidentally, if you truly agree that tone comes mostly from the fingers, then you must surely also accept that it is not really worth the 99.9% of the guitar buying public who are non-professional guitarists paying extortionate sums of money for the sake of slight differences in woods, build quality and electronics.

Not usually...just intolerant of stupidity.

Hey G' date=' I got your back if things get too unruly here but you also gotta remember you're dealing here with people's self esteem and life-defining possessions...of all the people here, I don't have to explain to [i']you [/i]how this discussion can move into a really emotive place...it's not always the place for brutal honesty...and it isn't like you're going to get rational, reasonable assessments of these guitars here any more than you can expect that some of the Bozos at the Les Paul forum to grasp the concept of "viable, economical alternative"...or other people here to grasp "reasonable facsimile"...jus' sayin'

Blaze on and let not the rambling fodder of said forums become a millstone round yer neck.

Ron...we do it so Jeffrey and Charlie have something vaguely resembling a life...if they weren't here where would they be? and what mischief might they be perpetrating? They've got about fifty six thousand posts between them and if they weren't here posting where might they be?...Give the kids at Harmony Central a break and just go along with everything...for their sake. Think of the children!

The preceding was an attempt at humour and not intended as malicious or insulting...OK...maybe a little...but in fun.

No animals were harmed in the making of this post.
