Replacing a humbucker with a P90?

I think I'm gonna trade some stuff for an Epi LP Junior but it has a humbucker in the bridge position instead of a P90. Can I replace the humbucker with a P90 without leaving some sort of gap and will it have to be routed for the P90? The humbucker also has a trim ring around it. I didn't think the P90 would just drop in but am I wrong on this one?

Well, if you don't want to do anything to the body, just put in a P-94, or a GFS version.

The Dog Ear P-90, that usually comes on a Jr. has only 2 screw holes (for the cover) as

opposed to the 4 for the Humbucker's retaining ring. Even if you didn't have to do any

routing, you'd still have those "holes" visible. So...???

Hey, Charlie: You've mentioned P94s on a few occasions. Do you have direct experience with them?

For the OP: Humbucker-sized P90s are made by many manufacturers, including Gibson, Seymour Duncan,

Kent Armstrong, DiMarzio and GFS, to name a few. Prices from approx. $35-100+. I have GFS Mean 90s

and think they are quite good but have not played any of the others.

I just ordered "Mean 90" pickups from GuitarFetish.com - they are P90s in a humbucker case - they are highly recommended by people on this and other forums. I don't have them yet, so I can't give you my personal experience.

Seymour Duncan also makes a P90 that fits in a humbucker slot, might be worth checking out.

I've got some Mean90s & they're ok but if you want the best P-90 pickup that fits in a humbucker hole you've got to get a Seymour Duncan Phat Cat. They absolutely kick *** and, for my money (& they're about twic as much as the Mean90s) they are the very best P-90 pickup (including the 'regular size' P-90s) that I've ever played.

I've played a Valensi Riviera, yeah. But I don't OWN one. They (P-94's) seemed pretty cool! There are some folks

here, that don't care much for them, but that's true of a lot of pickups. To each his own. I meant (mostly)

that they were interchangeable with humbuckers, without modding the guitar. And yes, there are a lot

of "alternatives," from other manufacturers, that may be as good, or better. So, I'm not advocating GIBSON

necessarily, just that "type," for what he wanted to do.

ive got 2 gibson p94s in my epi sg' date=' apart from looking great, they sound good too. a lot more versatile than HBs.

they've got a bit more bite than single coil humbuckers but the sound is great.

great clean and over driven.[/quote']

What is a "single coil humbucker"?

What are you putting them in' date=' Bob?[/quote']

I have his old LTD EC50 that I got for a deal I couldn't refuse.

It looks like this:

LTD-EC50b.jpg

It is light weight, has a wonderful neck, but the pickups sound inappropriate for the kind of music I play. Sounds like it would be good for heavy metal music. So I never play it.

So I decided to "fix it up" for 2 reasons

1) I played in a place with horrible interference. Leilani's Parker w/coil taps had to be set in the humbucker position, and my Casino buzzed like crazy. This is definitely an isolated, site-specefic problem as I've played many hundreds of other gigs with no problem. All the usual things you try like moving, changing AC outlets, etc., didn't work. One of the Mean 90s has reversed polarity so when both pickups are selected, it acts like a humbucker. The next time I play at that place, I'll bring the LTD instead of the Epiphone.

2) I just picked up an outdoor Sunday afternoon gig near the ocean. Seems to me if I'm going to get salt spray on a guitar, it would be better to get it on the LTD than my Casino.

So this will be my first guitar "mod".

Now the only other thing I have to do is figure out what to do about the black on black. Perhaps some reflective stripes or decals. I really don't want to strip and refinish it, and since I wear black on stage, the black guitar might disappear. And after all it IS show biz.

Hope it works. Good luck with the mod. Let us know how you like the Mean 90s.

How about getting a Duncan P-Rail? It is a P-90' date=' a rail type single coil, and can be switched to a HB in one of two ways....series or parallel. Pretty cool....all in the space of a humbucker.

Yea, that's the ticket................

I second Seymour Duncan Phat Cats. Get both and they cancel out the hum just like a humbucker. They're not as hot as a humbucker. So be aware of that.

But the LP Jr is a single pickup, unless he wants to route it for a second...........
