Saljam
Hello all... Can someone tell me what the major difference is between a Dot and a Sheraton II other than cosmetics. Is the tone the same on both? I'm looking for an inexpensive hollow body for some nice clean tones and crunchy distortion. I'm leaning towards the Dot (I like the Cherry finish). Thanks! brianh
I've had a Dot and have a Sheraton now, and the necks are significantly different. The Dot's neck is thick and the Sheraton's is slim. Sheratons have better hardware as well as better cosmetics. If you can find a used Korean Sheraton or Sheraton II for the same $400 they're charging for a new Dot, you might be happier in the long run. Oh, and Dots seem to have problems with intonation, I had to install a Earvana nut on mine, and there have been several recent posters here complaining about it too. PS: Welcome to the forum, how's the weather in Beantown?
brad1
hmmmm ;) . I have an '07 EE Dot that has a very thin neck on it. That's one of the things I like about it most.
New To Strats
They are more similar than not. Same pickups. Incidentally, I've seen a lot of complaints about the "gold" plating discoloring and/or coming off the Sheratons. If you're on a budget, the Dot will serve quite nicely, and a Dot Studio will do it for even less.
charlie brown
One Word....."Elitist!" (Dot or Sheraton) Costs more, harder to find, but WORTH IT! ;>) CB
AS90
One Word....."Elitist!" (Dot or Sheraton) Costs more' date=' harder to find, but WORTH IT! ;>) CB[/quote'] +1 on that one! If you cant get an Elitist I would go for the Sheraton II over the Dot any day, nicer neck, nicer looking and a mid 90s Korean one will be better made. We got some snow in Mass last night... It was 65 on Thursday now this... Fun!
Parabar
The neck profiles can vary a good bit on both models, but another significant difference is that the Dot's neck is mahogany while the Sheraton's is laminated maple. Maple is a harder and stiffer wood, which gives the Sheri a bit more brightness and definition in tone, while the Dot would be slightly warmer and darker. Again, there can be quite a bit of variation among individual guitars, so this is just a general guideline, but one that might help you decide which you prefer. charlie brown
Of course, Parabar is talking about, the Korean and Chinese Sheratons. The Vintage Kalamazoo versions, as well as the "Elitist" and AUSA versions have solid Mahogany necks. CB
jcwillow777
I have both, but I prefer my Sherry over the Dot mainly for the slim neck profile. That being said, I like my Dot too. My Sherry was made in Saein, Korea and is a very nice instrument. I wouldn't overlook a Sherry just because it came out of China though. There are good and bad guitars that come out of every plant. Good info on tone from Parabar. My Sherry is brighter than my Dot, and my Dot has a warmer tone than my Sherry.
charlie brown
And actually, the newer Chinese versions, are less "generic" in body shape, especially in the horn area, and more toward the original "Vintage" versions, from what I've seen, so far. I.E. more Gibson-Epiphone like. But, even Gibson era Epi's varied a bit...the '66 on, were more slightly "pointed" horns, than the previous rounded versions. Gibson did that to it's own ES-330, 335, 345, etc., as well. CB

brianh
There's a guy here in Philly that wants $1,100 for an Elitist Dot: http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/msg/1457834301.html It looks nice enough, but I can't figure it when you can buy an Elitist Casino for $1,000. It's been up for a month at least and no takers - I don't know how he's getting that value. I like Dots well enough, but not $1,100 worth. Only sold mine because I have too many semis and needed the money for other guitar crap. Here's another one for $800 (no pic): http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/msg/1494005290.html
JefferySmith
I don't find the difference in necks to be much of an issue, but I'm not a shredder either. An inexpensive hollowbody would be a Dot Studio, which is pretty good considering its preposterously low price.
