HAD A LITTLE SCARE

Saturday morning, I woke up around 7:30 and had some pains in my side. Thinking it might be just gas, I tried to let it pass for about an hour and a half, until I finally told my wife to take me to the hospital. Thinking it might be my appendix, I was a little scared. Got there, got some pain medicine through an IV and finally the pains subsided. After a CatScan, the doctor told me it was a small kidney stone about 2-3 millimeters and it would pass on it's own. He gave me some pain meds and meds to help with nausea and to help it pass. To make a long story short, it passed painlessly yesterday. It was about the size of a pin head. Can't believe something that small could cause so much pain.

Feeling better and back to normal today.

The best part of the ordeal was THE DOCTOR'S NAME IN THE E.R. WAS DR. GIBSON. The stars were aligned. [biggrin]

You realize that it would have been much funnier had the urologist's name been "Peterson."

I got a kick just out of thinking about a urologist known as "Dr. P."

Seriously, though, glad you're doing ok.

Make sure you follow up with your physician. I hope you saved the stone. They can determine what type it is so you can adjust your diet to prevent them. Because - here comes the bad news - bigger and more painful stones may be in your future.

I've had them.

Still remember the first one ever. It actually went "tink" when it hit the porcelain.

The last one I passed was crazy. My urine smelled horrible. I had a lot of back pain (even spent some time on an inversion rack). I was glad when it passed.

Yeah, I like the name game here...

BTW, I once did a specialty sports magazine "shoot" in Atlanta. The guy scheduled for a magazine cover was complaining about having some kidney stone problems.

It's midsummer. I'm guzzling almost anything liquid and I swear, the guy drank almost nothing. I don't mean booze, I mean I was drinking glass after glass of water, cola, coffee, OJ... and he almost none.

I pointed it out to him which is when he mentioned the kidney stone problem.

Whatever...

Man you have my sympathy I had a stone a few years back after the prescribed a calcium supplement at too high of a dose.

Damn I was hurting I kinda walk/crawled into the Emergency Room expecting a wait of several hours the doctor came out look at me and said come on back. My wife said well we just got here and the young female ER doc said your husbands is whiter than a sheet sweating and shaking so bad I would say it's a kidney stone or heroin withdrawal and he's actually a little to stocky for a heroin addict. Pain pills lots of fluid and finally passed it after peeing in a cofee filter for 12 hours. With I saw the stone I was pissed I was expecting a golf ball at the smallest with a softball or larger my guess. They showed me the jagged little bastard under a microscope but i still was pretty sure I was cheated and that it should have been bigger.

Thanks for all the replies guys. Yes I am following up this Friday with my doctor. As I said the stars must have been aligned because I had a regular check-up scheduled for this Friday anyway.

The stone passed Sunday and the ER nurse called me Monday to see how I was doing. I told her about the very small piece and asked if it possibly could have broken, and if I should be expecting more to pass. She said no they usually don't break and you would be surprised at how small a stone can cause that much pain.

Hopefully the follow up this Friday will get my diet regulated. I probably drink too much Diet Mountain Dew and not enough water.

The ER doctor did not have to do too much Exploring so I'll just think of him as Les. [biggrin]
