Studio Session

Recommended Posts

Sunday I will venture to a local studio with some friends to make a proper recording of a couple tunes. The owner is an old friend and local local rock n' roll legend of sorts.....he'll handle bass chores. There'll be a second acoustic guitar manned by another gulf coast player of considerable reputation, and one of the backing singers from my last band will contribute some sweet harmony. I've been threatening to do this for more than a year now and it's time has come. I intend to make this a "live session" with no over-dubbing and we will capture it on video in the dim light of the studio. I'm pretty jazzed about it all.....it will be fun if not productive! The plan is to record Love Live and Listen and Stones of Circumstance. If time allows I have another prepared.....

Fun fun fun!

Fantastic!

Good Luck Buc! (hey that rhymes).

It is great to have all the home recording stuff, but way, way ,way better to just get in a recording studio and just play and let someone that really knows what they are doing place that tube mic in front of you.

I have been keeping an eye out for a studio that specialises in acoustic music so I can do the same as you. I have mentioned this to a friend a number of times now, so if it is like guitar buying, it is not far in the future.

Good luck again and don't sweat it!

Indeed. If the video comes out right I'll certainly post it. I am looking forward to hearing the Hummingbird recorded in a studio with good equipment......see if it sounds as good as I think it does!

Looking forward to hear that Bird's voice in studio [biggrin]

I gotta say I am looking forward to this, mostly because from what I have listened to on here, I see the potential for a great record. And the songs seem VERY worthy of being performed and recorded and becoming something worth putting in the CD player for regular play.

No pressure. I am hoping that rather than this being the 'difinative' best time deal, that this is rather the 'first time' type of deal for more to come.

Absolutley no pressure! This project is just for fun. I have no plans for a record or CD or any thing like that........it's just for kicks. It's an opportunity to see some old friends and make some music for our own entertainment. I have never considered myself much of a player, singer nor performer. I do, however, believe that I on occasion write a decent lyric and my wish is that someday, someone with talents I do not possess will think the same and record something I have written. So beyond the fun of it all, I must admit to hoping for a payday......someday. Wishful thinking on my part, no doubt, but as the old saying goes, nothing ventured, nothing gained. If nothing else, long after I'm dead and gone, maybe someone browsing YouTube will happen upon my songs and, just for a moment or two, enjoy something I left behind. And, it truly is a joy to share what I do with some friends here on the GAF! Thank you all for your support and encouragement!

I do believe, sir, that you are describing my own dreams and ambition-less ambition here, too--well said...as usual. And ain't nothing lacking, from this listener's standpoint, in your playing, singing or performing. Not at all...

Buc,

I'm afraid that you and I don't share the same opinion of your talents.

One of the things that I truly enjoyed about the time I spent in Texas was all of the fine singer-songwriters that are either born into, or drawn to the music scene there. Over the years I've been able to see countless singer-songwriters doing their solo thing where there is no place to hide behind other players, producers, sound engineers, etc. Folks such as Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Willis Alan Ramsey, Lyle Lovett, Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, Slaid Cleaves, Kevin Welch, Bruce Robison, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Eric Young, Butch Hancock, James McMurtry, Terry Allen, Joe Ely and countless others that I can't even recall. Certainly a wealth of talent.

Take this for what it is worth, but with exposure to the above artists in mind, I find your presentation of your songs to be highly entertaining — simply great songwriting presented in an honest fashion that doesn't fail the song. So many people worry about trying to do too much with their music, when it seems that the best songs are often amongst the most simple ones. i think "honest" is a good way to sum up how your music strikes me. Your not trying to stretch things where they shouldn't be stretched. Your voice is good enough and your playing is good enough to present the songwriting (which is fantastic) in a believable fashion. In other words, you appear totally at ease with yourself and your songs when putting them out there for us to enjoy. Most others are trying to overcome a weakness in one of those key areas (singing, playing, writing) and it is obvious in the final presentation. I can't say that about you. My hope is that you won't be so quick to reject the idea of putting together a recording of your work (be it a CD, iTunes release, or whatever format the future brings).

You've got the goods.

I wish I could have put it so well.
