  1. I'd second the J-200 guess, though I'm not sure why anyone would do that to a J-200!
  2. 2 bucks off a pack, so $5.99. Know a number of folks here like them the way I do so I thought I'd pass it along.
  3. Hey, hey congrats! And I do think the chunkier neck impact the sound like you and others have suggested. Can't wait to see a picture!
  4. I'll beat up my own guitars, thank you!
  5. My guess is that the exact placement of the saddle is dependent on where the bridge was glued on as the saddle is routed out after the bridge is on, hence some variation between individual guitars and not necessarily a difference between the J-45 and the Southern Jumbo. Unless, that is, you are talking about the historical models where the SJ has the belly down bridge, which would alter the appearance. From what I understand the only real difference between the two guitars is entirely cosmetic (fancier binding and tuners, etc.), though I certianly defer to my wiser compatriots here!
  6. Ok, this is the one I was thinking of with the tortoise guard. The guards are gigantic, but that's a great look with the black.
  7. It really has become a bond. I've altered the pins (ended up with tusq on the low 3, ebony on the high 3), strings (loving the worn in Sunbeams), and have really heard her open up, which has matched the change in coloring. The striping is much more pronounced now than when she first arrived. You can almost see the crystalization in the top as you turn it in certain lights--the almost rainbow effect on the grain. Unless I'm playing the American Eagle LG just to force a change, that J is constantly next to me and is picked up many times a day.
  8. The grain has really turned into these beautiful stries over the past 9 months or so, and I just wanted to share what I think it just a gorgeous example of a 50s J-45. Has a beautiful deep tone and sounds as good played lightly as it does banged on really hard. She keeps me sane.
  9. Great tune. And amazing to watch you play lefty on a right hand strung guitar!
  10. Were they black or tortoise? I feel like I've seen previous reissues of this and it was a dark tortoise over the black which made it even darker looking.
  11. The look of this guitar makes me personally sad (to each their own, of course), but hol sh*t that is a gorgeous sounding banger.
  12. I'm not sure that J-45/50 guard will fit on that guitar. I bought that exact one from them for an older Epi J-45 and traced it for my recently purchased LG-2 American Eagle and it was way too big.
  13. Those are looking great! Can't wait to give them a shot--thank you again!!!
  14. Haha well, I guess that tells us what you thought of it in the long run! 🙂
  15. Want to hear the demo too, but I bought one of these many a year ago for use with a 12 string (as the one I got has 12 separate poles) but ended up putting on a 6 string. BluesKing777 is spot on in that it sounds great with a bit more mic than mag but that it give wicked feedback if played too loud like that. I used to play solo gigs at a decent volume and found 25-30% mic is about the sweet spot so it doesn't feedback. Is actually one of the better pickups I've used. But boy if you somehow catch that mic knob and accidentally jack it up...
  16. That's a really beautiful song!
  17. See, I love how this has turned into a fascintating converstation! I'd also have the wider nut width, but maybe because I have bigger hands. Let's go deeper. What era burst would you pick? The older mostly black burst, or the newer lighter burst? Especially if you had a beautiful grain on the wood (which I assume most of us would pick). Would you go lighter to highlight the wood, or do you love that deep almost black body?
  18. You can find strap buttons at most Musician's Friend sorts of places, but I don't see why you'd add one. I really dislike the balance when the strap is there. A good old fashioned sturdy boot lace around the neck is best for me.
  19. Ah, to hell with it. If I'm going full custom craziness I want a firestripe batwing!
  20. I love the batwing, but other than that this is pretty much exactly what I'd have! I would add a pickup, though, and since money is no issue how about a Sunrise? 🙂
  21. Great take, Dave. I just took a look at Reverb and it's interesting that there are a lot of the brand new historic series being listed as "Legend" series, though that's not how Gibson themselves is pitching them. Wonder if there's much difference or if the historic series is going for the same vibe. Interestingly, the actual "Legend" one available is almost 2k more than the new ones.
  22. This makes me wonder how many folks--if you were building your dream J-45--would go with the torrified top? If money was no object, is that something you'd go for or would you go for the standard, non-baked top?
