2013 Gibson ES-335 Memphis Standard - do I have 300k or 500k pots?
10PoundLester replied to LG King's topic in Gibson ES
The volume pots work with the tone pots and the capacitors to create filtering to sculpt the tone. The values they choose are going to give optimum control for a given set of pickups. Personally I wouldn't mess with them. After all, they did invent that circuit as a unit. Plus, changing out the pots on a 335 is a real PITA. -
You can get a little info here: https://authorityguitar.com/gibson-serial-number-lookup-decoder/ I would suggest calling Gibson customer service and ask them. SN's in this range are spotty to nail down precisely.

2013 Gibson ES-335 Memphis Standard - do I have 300k or 500k pots?

"in between?" -
A 355 is basically a 335 dressed up for dinner so a good bet that it's maple.

Those guitars sound fantastic. Enjoy!

Mine does not say "Custom" on the case. It has "Memphis" on the label but nowhere on the guitar or case does it say "Custom".

60's pickups in the Les Paul classic are they good pickups
10PoundLester replied to Obliviousme's topic in Gibson USA
Well I guess if you like them then they are good pickups. If everyone here said they hate them would that change your opinion of them? -
I should have posted this in the Stupid Jokes thread.

@gearbasher Why? What did we ever do to you? -
My sentiments exactly. Gibson invented this guitar and they invented humbucking pickups. They know what they're doing here. I've gone through tons of pickups and caps in all my electric guitars and always go back to stock because I realize that 50 percent of the tone you'll get out of any guitar is in your fingers, 50 percent is in your style, and the rest is in your gear.

2018 Classic Volume and tone controls help
10PoundLester replied to Oliva's topic in Gibson Repair and Restoration
That's not a problem. It's the 50's wiring. My LP and my 335 both react this way. It's what I like about them. There are almost infinite tones available from this setup. Don't worry about it - enjoy the discovery! -
Well, looks like they are back. Just registered a few minutes ago and filled up the "Introduce Yourself" category with spam! I really think you should make new users' posts be reviewed before they are posted. That will solve the problem right there. Also IP blocking.

By the time you get everything out of the f-hole and the new stuff back in, you might just decide that the new stuff is good enough. I have never changed out the components of a 335 type guitar. Mine sounds just fine the way it came from Memphis. I ain't goin' in there!

Yeah, 12 MPH with their little beer coozie helmets on in the middle of the lane because they consider themselves to be an actual vehicle! Then they blow stop signs and red lights.

Staples. Two or three in each side plus one in each corner. Now I see that Fender has the "Vibro-Champ Reverb" amp and it comes with the drip edge so they are making it, they just won't sell any of it separately.

What is it you are looking for that the BB1 and 2 doesn't deliver? IMO the "Bumblebee" and other "boutique" caps are a scam. They aren't even real unless you get NOS ones and even then I doubt there would be an audible difference. (Let the beatings begin!)
-
Why don't you just go back to that method?
-
Yeah well they're back!

It's really out of control here now. Looks like the moderators need to deputize some of us users to help. Step one is to make every new account be verified via a two-step process (Captcha + email verification) as well as have them in a waiting room so to speak before they can post. Or alternatively have their first 5 or 10 posts be moderated and approved before they can post on their own. These things work. I started one of the first acoustic guitar forums on the web back in the 90's and we had these very same problems. As it got more and more popular it became a huge spam magnet. These steps I mention help a lot.

Some forums make new users wait a period of time before they can post. These "Quickbooks" spams are probably made by someone who just signed up or maybe even a "bot".

What's the difference in the necks? Is it the thickness?

Standard vs 335 tonal characteristics/pickups
10PoundLester replied to Plandros's topic in Gibson USA
I actually find the opposite. My LP is a 2019 Standard '50s with the BB1 and BB2 pups. My 335 is a 2018 with the MHS pups and it's a bit warmer than the LP. I don't know if the wiring scheme is modern or vintage in the 335. The LP is '50s wired and so the tone controls are very interactive with the volume controls. Not so much with the 335 - way more subtle. Both have their place and both are excellent for what they are. -
Thanks! Central Mass? I was born and raised in Pittsfield. Back then it was a different place than it is today.
