  1. Apologies for the newbie question, but would the below type of changes mirror the type of changes you'd expect an old / vintage (and regularly played) guitar to exhibit, or is it more a way to take the harshness out of a guitar and add balance within and across the registers? And if so, why is that a good thing? Thanks to anyone for input. Rgds - billroy
  2. Before all the educated folks weigh in, I'll throw in my 2 cents. I've got a 2018 J45 vintage, and have a hankerin' for a K&K pick up through a Tonedexter pedal... to me that will replicate the sound of your guitar best, but does require the additional pedal.
  3. Hey BK - in your experience, would you recommend the tonedexter?

I was thinking of putting a k&k mini in my J45, and using the tonedexter with that. From the different recordings, I feel it gives a pretty good amplified sound of the guitar, but if you didn't mind - would appreciate your first hand impressions.

    Thank you for your input.

  4. :) Trigger Now that's a guitar with character, as noted in the opening statements, 'you hear the guitar and you know it's Willie Nelson before he even starts to sing...' Nice story, thank you for the lead!
  5. I've heard a few folks mention removing their pick guards. Do you use the guitar for mostly / strictly finger picking? If not, isn't there a concern of the pick wearing down / scratching up the front of the guitar? I love the look without them, but do feel they're functional.
  6. On my J45 - the very pointy part of my pick guard under the sound hole is coming up just barely, and does catch on a cloth if I'm cleaning it etc... was going to take it to a luthier to deal with, but there's a couple of tricks in this thread I may try.
  7. Wow Doug, great song... a lot of lyrics are close to home, cheers to you, cheers to good dads. On a more technical side - how are you going about the recordings, are you doing video and sound together - or are they two separate things. What mics, audio recording, video SW are you using - how do you do the picture in picture. Rgds - billroy
  8. On another thread, someone mentioned giving up smoking - this is one i wrote when i was 12 days in to giving up... caffeine. In honor of anyone giving up anything - one day at a time my friend! I call it 'Itch'. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-Qakybyx_4
  9. I just put Martin Eric Claptons (13 - 56?) on my Guild. I like them, and is why I switched away from the Martin Retros on my J45 - but maybe a little childishly, I wasn't hot on the idea of putting Martin strings on my Gibson.
  10. Thank you all, ended up going with the D'Addario EJ19s (12-56). I've got to give it a little time to see how it feels overall, but I replaced Martin Retros that I put on it, and I've got to tell you - I'm happy to be back in the PB family.
  11. Hi All, I'm testing out a couple string choices, and was reading this thread for options. One thing stated is most folks are recommending going with 12s... opposed to 11s, and 13s are not even in the discussion. Is there a reason to stay away from 13s (it's what I've been playing for awhile, I've convinced myself they have a fuller sound). Thanks for any input.. Rgds - billroy
  12. Very nice T-Sal, my wife asked if that was Mark Knopfler - I told her it wasn't such a hack. Really like your originals!
  13. Sorry, the link wasn't working Very Pretty Lady
  14. Here's an original on my new J45. Trying to learn to record, and sing... and play - but I got a honey, and she wanted a song. Thanks for listening (or at least thanks for letting me post ;) ! Very Pretty Lady Rgds - billroy
  15. Even though there seems to be more guitars from Japan, I'm still not comfortable buying from overseas. Too many variables and too far to deal with them. Somewhere within N. America (maybe the UK) with a return policy is where I've settled on if push comes to shove and my next guitar comes from the mail order route.
  16. Wow - and a very merry Christmas to you!!! I'll keep my eyes posted on the used front, just nothing out there right now. Good luck to a speedy delivery and enjoy your new family member!
  17. An update everybody, just heard back from Wildwood guitars and Gibson has discontinued the songwriter deluxe standard version. Maybe the reason there aren't many out there isn't because folks bought them and they liked them, but that folks never bought them in the first place. Too bad - it's a fine looking guitar in my opinion.
  18. Hi all, I was looking at the Songwriter Deluxe Standard ec (cutaway) in the darker burst color. I was checking for used models on Reverb / eBay, and there was only one available (in Japan). I thought maybe it was because it was a new release, but the one on eBay was a 2010. That seems long enough to have a few of these around. Does anyone know why there aren't any other used ones available anywhere? Thanks for any input.
  19. Trans Super nice! Liked it all - really liked the first part, simple but a little bit of power behind it, maybe a bit more base and very clean sounding. Super psyched to hear this coming from a hummingbird. ....and as i'm writing it, i'm listening to that first section for a 4th time!
  20. Wow, really nice - loved the music, made me wish i knew the language to follow the story - thanks for sharing.
