  1. Hi all, planning my first build and looking into how necks attach to bodies. I'm planning to copy the Fender bolt on design, but when I look for hardware, it all comes with wood screws (screws that screw directly into the wood of the neck). I guess it works if that's the age old way, but I would think a threaded insert into the neck where a bolt screws into it would be more secure... and if I need to take it on / off etc, would be better than strictly the wood screws. This makes sense to me, but I miss the obvious some times. Does anyone have experience or opinions on this? Rgds - billroy
  2. Nice Doug, really liked it! Was that just one mic?
  3. Man that’s looking nice, I love shiny... and I love shiny one piece even more!
  4. When you use stain on the neck, do you then go over it with multiple coats of the Tru oil? Rgds - billroy
  5. Step 1: Plan the build Step 2: Build any special tools (you can) that are needed to do the job. Will still need a fret saw and radius gage, and probably another thing or two - but if my ideas for home made tools work, i'm well on my way.
  6. Makes sense, thank you. I thought the can indicated it was a colored stain. I use tung oil on most of my stuff, many coats makes it shiny and special. Here's a 3 string (fretless) CBG I made (maple w/ mahogany), not great pics to tell how shiny and smooth it is, but the finish on the neck is beautiful... and 3 string slide is fun to play. With everyone's help, I'm hoping to figure out how to go from here to a complete guitar.
  7. Looking good! What type of wood did you use for the body / neck? Do you then cover the wood dye with something else, i.e. poly?
  8. Step 1, the plan... I've got some stock to do the neck, so going to try that first while I figure out where I'm going to get wood for the body. I believe the critical tools I need to get are the radius sander, fretboard gage, and a fret saw. I'll mull over how I'm going to finagle them, then I'll get chugging away. (PS Rabs, yours is looking pretty sweet!) (PPS - anyone have tips on how to scam the HW/electronics for cheap?)
  9. Lol - I joined the forum looking for a cutaway bird. I posted a few things listened to feedback played a few examples and am now in the anti cutaway family. Tell him to join the forum, post a few questions, listen to feedback, try some examples - and then he can get a proper SJ200. :) But to tell the truth, I bet an SJ200 w/ a cutaway is still awesome... just not as awesome!
  10. Huge thank you for the pics and stuff - time for me to do some thinking, and designing :)
  11. I'm in, shaping the fretboard and getting all the frets levelled concerns me - but think I can muscle through the rest. I want to build a tele-esque guitar. guess I need to go get some materials. Rabs, what's step 1?
  12. Play that funky music - Rob Parissi / Wild Cherry
  13. I posted this in acoustic performances, but think it fits here. This is Bob Dylan's 113th Dream (J45)
  14. To me, new strings have that weird metallic sound until you play it out of them over a couple days...
  15. Hi KSD - i'm assuming the truss rod adjustment would raise the string height a bit, hence the comment about 'a tish tougher to play' but how would this help with the tone? Rgds - billroy
  16. Bob Dylan's 113th Dream... accompanied by a little stick figure art :) J45 into apogee mic, into garage band (a little reverb and compression). Hope you find it enjoyable, was meant to be enjoyable.
  17. Props for SRV, Double Props for Mary Had a Little Lamb... I've just begun to muscle through cobbling a solo together (acoustic style) - oooof, 2 yrs work I figure. If you ever get a hankerin, would love to hear a cover.
  18. Pretty awesome!!! Did you pick any songs, which ones?
