Any gigs surprise you?

Was lucky enough to see Eric Bibb last week. To be honest, he had never been on my radar, and so I went to the gig (in Exeter) without any real preconceptions. Guess I was just hoping that it would be a pleasant evening and my ticket money wasn't wasted. Well, what can I say? "WOW!!" seems a bit understated. I can honestly say that it was the best gig I have ever been too. An amazing guy. Great voice, great attitude to life, awesome guitar skills, and a great group of musicians surrounding him. A guy called Michael Jerome Browne opened up the show with a few songs and then sat in as lead guitarist on Eric's set. What a player he was, I ended up purchasing one of his signed CD's after the show. Far, far and away the best night's entertainment I have ever had, surpassing by some margin, the Clapton gig I saw earlier this year. I hear Robert Cray is coming over the pond early next year. Better grab some tickets for him too. [thumbup]

Anyone else been pleasantly surprised by gigs?

Oh yea, I have been to shows just for the hell of being to a show and came out pleasantly surprised many times.

In my perspective live music in small venues is a great deal for the money. I paid $25 usd to see Hillbilly Casino, Unknown Hinson and The Reverend Horton Heat and it was a hell of a show.

I am already scanning the local lists to see what's next.

I went two or three years ago to see Cheap Trick. Long time fan and they rocked it.

What surprised me was that "Squeeze" opened for them. My wife asked who they were and I said, "Remember that song, Tempted by the fruit of another"?

They surprised the heck out of me....not only did I know the words to a half dozen songs and recognized several more, but they were incredibly tight and sounded great.

I never would have given them a second thought if they had not been opening for a band I loved, but came away very impressed.

The other one was years ago opening for Buckcherry were two bands....Sin-o-matic and Econoline Crush.......both are no longer around, but put on great shows and I bought their disks and loved them.

The last thing I went to was so surprisingly good that I put up a thread about it. Frank Vignola & Vinnie Raniolo guitar duo. And 3 of the guys knew about him and put up amazing vids.....only a few weeks ago.

Also have to add 38 Special.......saw them three years ago and could not believe how many hits they had turned out that I didn't remember until they played them.....also very tight and sounding great.

Pulsations.

It was a gigantic discotheque outside Philly. In...1981 I guess, somewhere in there. It was like Stefan from SNL would describe. Midgets. Tigers. Chix in cages. Indoor fireworks. Any powdered substance known to mankind. It was the 80s you know.

Then, I guess not too long after it really took off, one of the tigers clawed or bit somebody.

Man, sometimes I look at her and can't believe we lived through half thes hit we did. But MAN if was a fun gig!

Oddest gig and certainly a surprise. Played in an acid/rock blues band in college - frat brother booked us a wedding reception for a young couple. Had never done a wedding before and certainly not a wedding band, but club owner had heard us play a party at his place and recommended us for the gig. We got there early, and set up equipment. Did one song for a sound check before they even sat down for dinner. Bride's father said "No way", paid us the full price anyway and we just went back to campus and played a free show at the Union hall.

I didn't know what the Suicide Girls were when I saw them nearly ten years ago...bought the ticket thinking they were going to put on a typical burlesque show...I was blown away. They were nuts and fun and tastefully sexy and playful. I was hooked.

I've seen them three times including this last week in Austin. The new girls are good, but the show is a bit more tame, though I did get a splash of bourbon in my eye, cake on my collar and fake blood smeared all over my face.

I had a peek at the youtube link. Guess I'm too old to find anything remotely enticing there. Give me Chrissie Hynde wearing nowt but a telecaster any day of the week :)

Cheap Trick this past summer in Pittsburgh. I got some free tickets. I'm a fan of them, but I had never seen Cheap Trick live. Unfortunately, there weren't a lot of people there (it was a week-night show), but that made it easy for us to get close to the stage. They just played hits, and a ton of old material. It was probably my favorite concert of the year. I even caught a pick from Rick Nielsen. -He probably threw 949 of them into the crowd though. Haha.

Really fancy seeing the TTB. Was gutted to learn that only London was on the menu though. Such a nightmare of a place to get into and out of. Waiting for Jonny Lang to do the rounds now :)
