Merkin Posted January 1, 2009 Share Posted January 1, 2009 Hey guys, I'm new here. Let me first start off by saying that I've played guitar since the very early 90's. I've been away from playing for about 5 years now. Recently my 11 year old son wanted to start playing guitar due to his and my love for 80's glam rock and metal. Needless to say, I was very excited for him. I've owned many a guitar from Jacksons to Fenders. Well, I no longer own any of these guitars any more to hand down one of them so, I went and purchased him an Ibanez that he liked. I'm getting ready to put him in lessons with a local guitar shop in our community. Anyways, I've been messing around with his guitar and I realized how much I miss playing. The only problem is I'm not as good as I used to be!!! So, now I need a new guitar to be able to jam with him. I'm not very wealthy so I can't just go and drop alot of money on a new rig and setup for myself. That's where income tax return will come in!!!. I was thinking on buying an Epi LP Standard Plain Top in Honeyburst finish. That guitar is beautiful and just what i'm looking for!I really like the Gibby LP but, that kind of money is not an option. The thing is, I fell in love with the Epi LP!!!!!! The sound is incredible!!!!!! I've been doing alot of research on the Epi LP and what can I say, I'm hooked! Standard would be a fine guitar for you; I only suggest playing as many as you can and picking the best of the bunch. If your finances would allow you may also want to try to pick up a used Elitist Les Paul. They are a big jump in quality but buying used you wouldn't pay much more than for a new standard model. I've got the sunburst lp studio.. mahogany body, mahogany neck, set neck, grover tuners. Sure I upgraded it a lot but all you need is a set up. these guitars are quite nice stock out of the box with just action adjustment and a decent set of strings. buy it online with return guarantee and you'll be fine. Then moved on to a Strat copy with no brand on it, crappy finish and lousy pickups, all that with no amp so I'd just hook it up to my stereo! lol Now, I've been a Les Paul fan ever since I first picked up one. It's amazing, just the tone I wanted. I own a couple Gibson LP that I play, and one very special vintage model that I barely touch, too afraid of screwing it up! lol I also own an Epi LP and I absolutely love it! It's one fine guitar, I can tell you that much, and you'll get years of enjoyment out of the investment you make today. The Epis are so nice that I just picked up yesterday that LP Slash Signature I wanted for so long... Very exited about that! The real price is all those moments you'll share with your kid, can't put a price tag on that! A word of warning.... Les Paul guitars can be addictive, I speak from my own experience! Don't be surprised if you end up walking out of a guitar store with a Gibby or if you find yourself scanning through the classifieds, eBay and Craig's List to find that used LP of your dreams... Anyhow it seems to me that you are one of those rare "one guitar guys"....they be out there . If that's so then I'd go with the one that makes you happy, and PLAY. Canine Posted January 1, 2009 Share Posted January 1, 2009 It's all part of the deal I guess, I ended up surrounded by MRX and Boss pedals, Gibsons, Epis and some Fenders! It's a journey as you well know, and happens to all of us I believe! I got a guitar for my kid, customized it a bit to make it one of a kind, and I'm very proud and happy with that decision as I'm sure you'll be too! They are a big jump in quality but buying used you wouldn't pay much more than for a new standard model. +1 As a more or less "1 guitar guy" I will also suggest the best quality LP you can afford from the outset' date=' rather than entering the cycle of buying... regretting... wanting more... waiting for $$ to mod/buy again.... As an experienced player, now that you've decided to play again, buy the tools you need, and play [i'](instead of fussing over sub-standard gear).[/i] I also came to my beautiful standard honeyburst Epi Elite LP by way of cloned strat and was blown away by the playability/quality difference and how much better the 24 3/4 scale/humbucker setup suits me. However, it's not the 1st choice of most "glam 80's rockers" but if you're hip with the more "classic rock" image of the LP, then go for it.... Although I've been rather proud of myself as far as thinning the herd. From almost 30 guitars down to just the 6 I use the most....well, 8...just bought two more . The thing is that they are all so different in feel and sound...Ah..LOL..just justifying GAS. Seriously though, if I could stumble across just one guitar that would have all the one's I have now wrapped up into it I would definitely, I think, be a one guitar guy myself.
