Epiphone Dot

My next guitar is most likely going to be a semi or full hollow body guitar and the Epiphone Dot Deluxe with flame top in Sunburst with the gold hardware looks to be the best choice. Anyone else have a Dot? But i may go for the Gretch for about $200 more.

I have a Dot Studio which I like very much, except that it came with the horrid hot bridge pickup. New pickups cured that problem. "Regular" Dots come with Classic 57s (or whatever they call them) in both positions. The Gretsch Electromatics are real nice, too. Here's something that might also interest you:

I have the Dot Deluxe. Its a great sounding guitar, easy to play (I bought it since its cheaper than the Sheraton). You have to like a thick neck to love this guitar. It took a while to get the intonation right, and I have to replace the nut. (if I'd known more I would have just removed the nut that came with the guitar and lowered the action that way). I ended up with a gibson graphite nut.

Right now I'm playing through a Roland Cube 20X. Sounds great.

I am waiting to see if I want to change out the PUPs. My plan is to play for several months to see how they work out and if I am looking for a different sound I will look at Seymour Duncan 59s or DiMarzio.

I have the Dot Deluxe flametop. It is a good looking guitar. Much more grain showing in the wood than my ES 345. I like it a lot. It is not the instrument that the Gibson is, but it was much, much, much less money. I bought it because I could leave it at work and not take the Gibson back and forth. The neck is bigger than the Gibson, but nothing I could not get used to. Since these are the only two guitars I own, I can't really compare it to others, but I can say for the price, I am very happy with it.

i cant decide on the Deluxe or the all Black. I kind of like the black more but i wish it had gold hardware like the B.B.King lucille.

I could be wrong but the last time I looked, which was a while, Lucille had gold hardware.

I have a Sherry and a Dot. I like the slimmer profile of the neck on my Sherry over the thicker profile of the neck on my Dot. That being said, they both get about the same amount of playing time. Both are nice guitars and I have modified both of them extensively. I have to agree, the Dot is definitely one of Epi's best bang for your buck. No telling when they will hike the price on the Dot like they did on several of their other guitars.

Just like black cars - they look great when they're clean' date=' about 5% of the time.[/quote']Bingo.

I had a black 2001 Camaro SS.

Fun car. Ran a 13.1@107 in the 1/4 mile bone stock.

I got rid of it more than anything because the black color was driving me insane...I swear the car was a dirt magnet, you could not keep it clean for a day, and it was the type of car I'd want to look spotless when I was driving it.

Add to that I have hard water here so water spots were crazy bad.](*,)

My wife's Civic is black and we live in Oregon, where it rains 10 months of the year. And she wants the next car to be black. Go figure

It's ok if you don't care how your car looks, but my SS was the type of car I'd expect to drive around in it spotless, a fun, kinda head turner car.

The other probelm with black cars is they get soooo hot in the summer.

when I bought my Sherri, I spent about 4 hours doing a head to head comparison of a standard Cherry Dot,

a Dot Deluxe Flametop. and a Sheraton II.......

I actually liked the tone of the standard better than the deluxe.......more, vocal shall we say.......

of course the deluxe was the eye catcher....and it felt just like the standard..........but the tone was a bit, muffled on both pickups.

Then I picked up the Sherri.............nice slim neck............weighs a bit more(which I liked), volume and tone knobs were configured differently........that took about 3 seconds to get used to............but the tone.........OMFG the tone!

needless to say, I ended up with the Sherri, for the playability, the balance, and the sweet singing screeching tone from both p'ups.

but, between the Dots.........unless you just want eye candy.......get the Standard.

First post here...

Back in September or so I was at GC and plugged a standard Dot, probably a natural finish, into a Fender Blures Jr. amp and was immediately in love. I played several different models over the next few months and they all played and sounded great. Then around Thanksgiving GC dropped the price on the flame-top Deluxe VS and I bought one from another GC sight unseen. It plays and sounds as great as all the others I'd played. I split it's time between the 'crunch' channel on my 15 watt Line 6 and a 30 watt Crate for cleaner settings. My 14 year old even likes to punch the 'insane' button on the Line 6 and play some of his thrash metal on the Dot.

But I have a question about the flames. I've seen plenty of different flamed tops, including 2 flame top Dot Deluxes, but this one looks different than anything other I've ever seen. When I hold the guitar at an angle and look "down" the flames, they appear to be three dimensional. It's as if in the transition from light to dark, there is almost a rippled or wave effect. I like the way it looks, I just wonder if this is natural? Apologies if this is discussed elsewhere, but anything anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated.

The 14 year old also has a Les Paul Ultra which he and I are both crazy about. And his older brother has an Epi Thunderbird bass. So we're somewhat of an Epi family.

thanks to all...

That's what a good flame top is suppossed to do! The most desired flame tops, have rippling, 3-D flame.

I'm one of those who enjoys a nice figured top (as long as it's not too garish)' date=' on a solid body LP type guitar! BUT,

for semi's...I much prefer "plain tops!" Not even sure why (understated elegance, maybe?)...but, I always have!

CB[/quote']

I go in waves there. My first Gibson was a vintage sunburst when I really wanted cherry. Now, vintage sunburst is my preference (with natural being my #2 choice and cherry being my #3 choice) when it comes to semihollows.

But an SG looks goofy to me if it is anything other than cherry!

A lot of Dot users here. Most of them like the Dot very much. I like the Sheraton a bit more' date=' but both are fine guitars. The full hollows are more likely to be longer scale (25.5).[/quote'] i'm thinking the only real reason not to like the sheraton more is the lack of upper fret markers... otherwise... most classy guitar i have ever laid my eyes on. very pretty, sounds very pretty.

and don't come in saying "OMG ELITIST CASINO NATURAL!!!... or GIBSON LES PAUL GOLDTOP/BURST/FLAME/STRIPE/QUILTED"

I'm saying I like the sheraton... pretty... must stop gas... must stop gas...
