Distortion pedal with a Casino

Recommended Posts

Ok I know that hollowbodies and distortion pedals don't really mix due to the feedback issues. But I was using a Boss DS-1 Distortion pedal with my Casino through a Fender Hot Rod Deville 410, and wasn't really crazy about the rig. I did however try a Blues Driver and liked the sound very much and am considering getting one. Are their any other distortion pedals out there that would be a good choice?

I use a Maxon OD808 with my Casino and it sounds great. It is pretty much the same as a Tubescreamer. Maxon manufactured the original Tubescreamer on contract for Ibanez, and now produce their own version.

+1 on Tubescreamers, I prefer the TS9. Haven't used it with a hollow body, but I'd wager it would sound awesome like it does with every other guitar I've used it with. It really makes a tube amp come to life IMO

Since you're the only one who knows what sounds good to you and what doesn't, the best thing you can do is take your guitar and amp to a store (or several) with a good selection of distortion boxes and try 'em out. Any recommendations from us will be based on what WE think sounds good, and your taste may be different.

As a personal preference I would like to stay away from the Tube Screamer, I really haven't heard to many good things about it.

Interesting. I've never heard anything bad about it. lol I love mine. It's more of an overdrive than a distortion anyway though.

Maybe you might want to try something like a Dallas Arbiter/Dunlop Fuzz Face. Especially if you're looking for that "retro" kind of distortion. Pete Townsend and Jimi Hendrix used them, among others.

Every pedal has it's own vibe. I agree with Parabar, just try out a lot of different stompboxes until you find "The One".

If you have the money, a Blues Driver is a great pedal. It's got a pretty full tone, without the mid addition that a lot of people complain about in a TS. The TS7 can be modded to TS808 specs by changing out 2 simple resistors, and it costs a buttload less. I personally prefer the TS7 because I like the extra presence it gives when you kick it on. Either way you can't go wrong. You may want to try a green screamer from BBE or the various GFS dirt pedals, as they seem to be very well received.

But, to make a long post longer, try a few before you decide, but don't rule anything out based on others opinions.

I love my moded TS-9s, BUT, a couple of months ago I bought an MXR Classic overdrive when GC had them on sale for $30. I was blown away. It sound very similar to my TS-9s, just a little brighter, but not much. Enough so do give me another overdrive color on my board. I liked it so much that I bought a second one. I still have my modded TS-9s on my board, along with my MXR.

A word to the wise, don't try to change the LED. I love blue LEDs and I tried to change it. Well, I fried the LED on my first one. The pedal still works, just no LED.

They have them in stock again, limited edition, for $40. So with the 15% discount today it's about $35 out the door with tax.

FWIW - I have a Hot Rod Deluxe with a Vintage 30 and sometimes my modded DS-1 sounds good thru it, sometimes not. It definitely didn't before I modded it. It was too shrill for my taste. The above pedals sound great thru my Fender and Marshalls.

I own a lot of (too many) distortion pedals...but, somehow, I always

come back to my Boss Blues Driver! It sounds great, no matter which

guitar I'm using. I may have to tweak it, a bit...depending on which

guitar I'm using, but that's no big deal. In fact, I use 2 of them,

at different settings, so I can alter the result by using one, or the

other, or even both...at the same time. Just bought the new Boss "Power

Stack" pedal (based on a great demo, I'd seen...since I'm 100 miles from

the nearest music store)...it's great! However, I've only messed with it

a little bit, and not with the Casino, yet. LOL The heavier distortion

"Stack" sound, up until now, was with my Marshall Govn'r Plus pedal. So...

we'll see??? ;>)

but what happens when you crank up the volume on the amp? does it squeel like a pig?

So many guitarrist use a hollow body at high gain on stage, eg. The Cult ... I even used a 12-string acoustic with a bridge piezo pickup being as lound as the drums with no problem ... ok, no distortin, only chorus, in my case.

I think it's just a matter of correct distance to the speakers.
