brannon67
Do you guys like the big Epi headstock? It bugs me for some reason, and I don know why. I love the guitars, and the way they sound(some of them anyway) but that damn headstock is crazy. I think the Masterbuilt headstock looks way better. Thoughts? TommyK
They are distinctive. I like the MB's as well. If you come from a Gibson frame of mind, it is probably the 'clipped' points that bug you.
brannon67
Yeah, the Epi headstock is different alright. Destinctive, yes it is.
Guest Farnsbarns Wunterslausche
Yep, too big and too fussy a shape. I have a Sheraton so there's all that crazy inlays as well. Way OTT. I'm about to do a custom rebuild on it and I have an idea for the headstock. I'm not gonna say too much until the time comes but... I'm gonna give it a new do. charlie brown
Doesn't bother me, at all. If It did, or I wanted some other headstock, I'd just buy a different brand of guitar. ;>b CB

dhanners623
It wouldn't be an Epiphone without that headstock. It's part of the aesthetic.
brannon67
Yeah, your right, its not a Gibson, so. Take it as it is I guess. Its not that bad.

Guest Farnsbarns Wunterslausche
Why didn't you just get a Dot then? There are more diferences than just the fussy inlays in the headstock. Further more, I was in a shop, they had this used guitar quite cheap, I played it, I liked the tone and feel so I purchased it. Isn't that how it works? Some 12 years later I have far more disposable income, lots of nice guitars and quite a different outlook on life so I decided I'd dig out that Epi and do a custom rebuild, which includes reshaping the headstock which I don't really like. Is that OK? :P
clarkuss
The headstock on my EJ-160e is MASSIVE!! I don't mind because it means I could always have it reshaped into a Gibson style if I so wished. Better than the smaller ones on the electrics that would be harder to reshape. I like the Epi features on Epi models. It's what makes them Epiphones! meanstreak
i like the epi acoustic headstocks but i hate the epi electric headstocks lol I'm just the opposite in a way! I like the logo on the Les Pauls, I wish they all had that font choice. The acoustics used to have them in the 90s, my PR-100 and Hummingbird both have the Les Paul style headstock and font. RaysEpiphone
Ummm...Yeah, the top wings of the headstock sorta make using a winder on the D & G tuning key's a bit of a chore but it's not that big a deal really....Sound quality, reliability and playability matter more to me. Thats why I like Gibson product's.
Dodgermod
I love the Epi headstock - think it looks better than Gibsons' although it does bang off stuff occasionally!!

charlie brown
Or, you could just buy a MIJ version, like I did...IF they still made them, that is. ;>) But, I like my Texan's headstock...as is! CB

charlie brown
For me, if the electric's are "Gibson clones" they should be allowed the Gibson headstock, with the Epiphone logo! Like my MIJ '61 SG. If, however, they are Epiphone original models, Sheraton, Casino, Riviera, Wilshire, and other's, etc., then they should (and most do) have the appropriate Epi headstock. That way, they look "correct," for the models. Epiphone Japan, was allowed the use of the Gibson headstock design, on all the Gibson clone models, because they were not allowed to be marketed, in any country, outside of Japan. An "exclusive," domestic version, if you like. All other exported models, had either the Elitist, or the standard Epiphone hour-glass headstock. That continues... The Epi headstock doesn't bother me, at all...unless it's on a "Gibson Clone" model. It just looks "wrong" (to me), that way. But, it's one way to keep the distinction, from the higher priced Gibson's. As long as a guitar is well made, and plays/sounds great, I don't really care, that much, where it's made, anymore. There's good stuff, and junk, too...made everywhere. CB
guitar dog
I agree with CB. I think when my very small brain "sees" a Gibson clone (Les Paul, SG) it expects a Gibson headstock - the Epi doesn't look right. However, on a Epi model it fits - my Casino would seem wrong with a Gibson headstock.

I understand where you're coming from on this CB, but personally I still have trouble with the idea of buying a Chinese made guitar & have managed to avoid it thus far (14 out of 17 made in the US). In many areas of our lives these days, we cannot avoid purchasing a product made in China because reasonable options no longer exist. But in the world of guitars, we do have a number of high quality options, and I feel particularly good about supporting US production whenever possible. As for the discussion related to headstock shapes, I agree with you completely. The hourglass headstock is one of my favorites!

In fact, I still prefer it! But, I won't reject a very nice guitar, based on where it's made, IF I love everything else, about it. I have managed to keep my (2) Chinese made guitars, from the same US owned company...Epiphone. And yeah, I DO still wish they were made here. But, they'd be 4-5 times (or more) the price, just like Gibson's. They're both really nice guitars, and I'm happy to have them, regardless. Aside, from my MIJ (Epiphone Japan) '61 SG Standard, ALL of my other guitars are USA made....oops, I do have (1) MIM Fender '60's Classic Telecaster...which is outstanding, by the way! So, 4 "foreign made," out of 24, isn't that bad. ;>) CB

I'm definitely rooting for Gibson to make a go of producing Epi Masterbilts in the former Garrison factory up north. Seeing the production of anything switch from China to these shores would be rare & quite cool.
